- Exactly how far will one tank of fuel take your #PowerPlus Challenger or Harley Davidson Road Glide. We run all three bikes dry trying to see who can go farther AND show you exactly when you'll run out of gas.
My #powerPlus108 va a #117ci and a #122ci Harley Davidson engines.
Ok I don’t think 80 conserve’s fuel.
Wasn’t trying to conserve, was just setting a baseline that everyone was aware of. If I was conserving we would have done exactly the speed limit but that’s not a realistic benchmark for most people so we averaged about 77 mph.
80 is right at 3000 rpm and thats where the cam likes it
This is awesome! I have a 22 Indian chieftain limited and we are taking a trip to North Carolina next Saturday. So to just see this, it makes me appreciate my Indian even more ❤😊
This has to be one of my favorite videos of yours. What an amazing challenge. And your right at the end of the day clocking miles and riding with friends is what it’s all about. Ride Safe
That’s very kind of you HDR, maybe because it’s not just Indians? 🤣🤣
Such a wonderful video. Very informative and fun to watch. I can’t even get close to 6 gallons when I refill. Thanks for your effort.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Well done! I have the RGS Special with a 114, so I should be good on the way to Sturgis! Great vid B!
Nice! I ran out on the PA Turnpike once, my Roadmaster gauges lied to me some how. Best I have seen is factoring the instant MPG and miles traveled because my low fuel light comes on way too early. I don't know if I could get as far as you guys did before running out, but I can get 40 mpg at close to 80 on the 111 motor around 3k rpm. Love these machines!
I definitely need to test this on my 21’ street glide special with totally stock parts. This is a great idea.
What a great idea and video. First, your widgets and dashboard is cool! Always wanted to do that and appreciate you doing it for me! Hope you and the wife are well
Thanks Bob!
What a coincidence you dropping this video after just yesterday myself and a friend ran down to Gainesville so he could get his break in service done on his new road glide. We started out by topping off our tanks at that Circle K next to Farmhouse Restaurant and made it all the way down and back before we filled up again. My Chief only took 3.6 gallons to fill back up. 182 miles round trip. It’s amazing how far technology has brought us…..well in regards to some things 🤪🤪🤪. That looked like it was an awesome day my friend 🤘😎🤙
Awesome video and very informative! I have a 22 RG Special and when riding 2 up with the wife and the gas light turns on, I’m in a rush to get to the nearest gas station lol!
Awesomeness-thanks for sharing!
Pretty sweet! I need to make a run and see how long my 06 Vulcan 1600's 5 gallon tank will last. Was a really cool video, my friend! I look forward to the next one!
Edit: Whew, boy do those tacos look awfully tasty!
Good video! This looks like it was one helluva ride and good times!!!!
Good? Only “good”? LOL
I have a 2021 roadmaster and pushed it to 250 mi when I filled up. I have a five and a half gallon tank. at the gas station i ended up filling the tank at 5.2 gallons still at 0.3 gallons left. My wife wasn't very happy I didn't realize how far the next gas station was but I made it
I’ve pushed my Springfield well past zero miles to go but could still only squeeze in a half gallon, but I only got 190 miles out of it. So that means a half gallon could have got me another 20 miles. Speed has everything to do with it though right?
Epic! Been wanting to do this on the 19 chieftain Dark horse for a while now. I’ve ran more than 25 miles past “empty” a couple time but never till it was out. Looks like a fun trip
Def was a good time but you can never really capture the full scope of an 8 hour day
@@TwoIndians true, however you do make it seem easy😎
Thanks for the video i have a 2017 victory cross country im keeping it but i been eyeing that indian challenger for my next toy
Hello from Sweden! Great video!
Hi there!
The new cvo dash makes the challenger dash look like an 80’s car.
100%. The tech is so much better
Isn't it 50 grand? Lol
Nice gas run. I also believe it’s the tune that makes a difference as well.
Well my tune and mods are probably hurting me more than anything I would guess
My 22 Roadmaster (5.5 gallon tank) fuel light comes on when there is still 1.5 gallons in the tank. I average 44 mpg since I got the bike; I have pushed fill ups a couple times (once 60+ miles) and yet to put in more than 4.4 gallons.
Yeah I wish they would just tell you exactly what you have left. We used to own a small Mercedes and when the fuel light come on at E you had about 200 feet to go LOL
Our 114 gets 43 mpg 2up and 47 solo. Of course that varies depending on my right hand.
Nice test
This was great.. what a great excuse for a ride with mates. Might have to do one of these on the RM. Ps video wasn't long enough. This could have been a hour easy..😊
Then no one would have watched it LOL
I love my Road Glide. I’m going to get a Challenger but won’t get rid of it. As far as power stock the Challenger hands down is better.
Nice vid and also what kind of motorcycle glasses are those you have on they are cool
Those are the WileyX glasses I got from the optometrist. Honestly they’re identical to an off brand pair I used to have from Wal-Mart for half the price
I noticed this recently when my challenger was down to 30 miles range, rode another 15 before filling it up, and it only took 5 gallons, so it's clearly pretty conservative in its range calculations. Funny thing is mine is averaging 42 mpg riding in the mountains of Utah, frequently climbing a mile or more per trip, but somehow yours says 38 riding across FL. I would expect it to be much more efficient on such flat roads. Though my mountain trips are not at 75+ mph so that may be the difference
on mountain trips ou get the benefit of downhill coasting. When I was in durango last year my mileage shot up and I think thats why.
All Bikes get better mileage on mountain twisties that keeps your speed down....
My average is between 42-46 mpg with speeds of 75-85 mph. My thought on this Brian, you have cams and I do not.
Recently logged a 6200 mile trip out west covering 14 states with our 2014 Chief Vintage. Stage 2 111 tuned by The Vic Shop in Iowa. A high of 55 mpg including rolling The Million Dollar Highway from Montrose to Durango to a low of 34 mpg running 80 against a headwind in South Dakota. Was traveling with two street glides, one a 103, one a 107. Both stock tunes. All three 2up, loaded down. Mine got the best mileage at lower speeds and higher elevation, and the worst mileage rolling 80 - Dan
My gas light comes on at about 95-100. I can get about up to 30 more miles before I'm dry.
Ah, the Scout life.
When I had my Scout I once got 145 miles using average speeds on highway
Great video, I would have thought 20 ish miles on low? That is pretty cool to get over 50ish miles.
The Harley’s were much more accurate with less of a cushion. The first one ran out about 10 miles after Empty

Thanks! Check out all my videos on the Challenger, might be some good info for you there
My biggest and ONLY complaint about my '18 Chieftain Dark Horse. It'll tell me it's LOW and go and fuel up and I still have 1.5 gallons of gas. Indian needs to do better with that. Other than that, awesome bike!!!
100%, Id much rather have an accurate description of actual fuel range than this nearly 60 mile cushion. I'm a friggin adult, I can deal with it hahaha
Nice video
Don’t forget that you have an exhaust and probably a high flow air filter and a tune that does change the miles per gallon a bit 😉👍
And cams! It the whole purpose for me was to see how accurate the fuel range was
I was told that with my H-D RGS it can vary from bike to bike because of the way the fuel sock lands when installed into the tank. I know NOTHING about Indian as SGT Shultz would say 😂😂😂 Have a great trip to Sturgis! I'm Jelly!
I see nothing! LOL. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Love seeing my dudes smiling and killing insects! Ride on baby!!!
Awesome scientific research 🤩
I noticed your MUFU was missing
Are you still using it?
I left the house so early in the am I forgot to grab. But yes. Using it whenever I remember, which means when I’m not in a hurry. Hahaha
You have to factor in..the accuracy of the fuel pump...and the tank manufacturer 6 GA. Mark..which is never right at the top on any type of vehicle..good video though..going 65 to 70 would increase that mpg ..but is very difficult on today's interstates..as the flow is 75 to 80..even in the 55 zones..i know this beautiful interstate system and most state hwys systems in America..as I was OTR..for 21 years..with 3.1 million miles on the clock when I retired 4 months ago..
If the Challenger only gets 160 miles to a tank that sucks, glad to see your low fuel notification gets you another 50 or 60 miles. I can get at least 220 out of a tank on my 21 Road Glide standard with a 107 ci engine. I have a stage 2 cam and cruise at around 80 mph. I still consistently get about 40 - 42 MPG
Good points. One thing my buddies pointed out later was that their fuel range was far more accurate for a longer period. Like when Jason ran out he was given a 10 mile warning and when it hit zero he was done. Tony said basically the same but obviously his smaller bore gave him more range
But to your first point, clearly I got about 240 miles so a bit more than 160 🤣🤣
Great video. That was a great way to see how many miles you can actually get. I’m subscribed
I regularly get 240 + miles from my Challenger.
6 gallons at 40-45 mpg. That's about where you should be. I'm inspired to do one with my 2022 pursuit, but I have a stage 2 and a lloydz tune so it might not do as well. I'm also at 4200' elevation in utah, so there's that. I was in New hampshire last month and a noticed an increase in power at lower elevation. I expect that helps with the mpg too, but you said yours was 39 mpg.
Mine also has a stage 2 with a Lloydz tune. 🤷🏻♂️
My Chieftain`s gas light comes on at 60 miles till empty. But still counts down. I have ridden it till it had less than 10 miles to go. I have a Yamaha that when the gas light comes on it zeros the trip and starts counting up. To show how many miles you have gone. I guess to show how far you been going on reserve.
I’d definitely go with the challenger they handle better than the road glide and offer more off the show room floor than Harley does. Yet like Harley you can make it your own and buy parts for the challenger to make it lighter than stock and more reliable .
They Def handle and ride better but the HD has way better electronics. Car Play is built in and I dont have to use reliable klugey interface...that never works by the way. I doubt Id ever go to the dark side but man they have that stuff nailed
@@TwoIndians The dark side. 😂
There is no comparison. The Indian is far superior main because its a fully liquid cooled and fully counter balanced engine period. Also the Indian has a gear drive primary and single hole oil fill and drainage. Harley Davidson has gotten way better after 2017 with the M8 platform but their Revolution Max engine platform needs to take center stage.
Best i ever got was 240 miles on my old ultra limited.
I have never owned or ridden either an Indian or HD motorcycle. Other less elevated machines. However, I can’t help but think of the legendary Ford vs Chevy dispute. I strongly suspect that individual machine variation and personal preferences far exceed objective pluses and minuses.
When are you leaving to Sturges and if you are passing through MO maybe we can join you guys ? Looks like me and my girlfriend we will go alone on our challenger 🎉
Not sure when or where the track takes us but good chance we’re gonna run through St Louis to KC this Saturday.
@@TwoIndians Ahh, we won’t leave till next Friday, we’ll if by any chance St.Louis is your food or refresher stop, let me know I would love to show you guys with some STL famous food places. I will message you on IG.
Ohhhh this was a good 1 fellas team Indian 💨💨💨🏁
Thanks!
What seat does Tony have on his 2022 Road Glide CVO in Envious Green? I have the same bike and I’m l👀king to upgrade.
That’s from Bad Boyz Cycles. Tell them you heard about us in this video. badboyzcyclez.com/
@@TwoIndians Thanks, will do!!
I seem to remember a guy who did the same test (unintentionally) on his Springfield during an iorn butt when he forgot to fill up...😂
Hahaha. Yeah I forgot to mention that while I was editing
Good to know.. Now race em 😎
Hahaha, been there, done that, not doing it any more. Bottom line is there’s always someone faster and I’m trying to make this bike last.
Going to Sturgis? Im planning on going as well. What dates would you be in Sturgis and any particular vendor.
We’re there from the Monday before in Deadwood and spending the first weekend at the Chip.
no vendor will have me. LOL. Look, I dont promote, I dont reach out to these people and ask for anything becuase they'll probably turn me down. I'll probably be at Lloydz on the first Saturday at the Chip
@@TwoIndians I am on my own as well, but I’ll be traveling to Sturgis. Maybe we can hook up for an ice cold beer. Also, they probably don’t want me either.🤣🤣
Great run. What mode was you Challenger in?
Sport mode. Always sport mode.
@@TwoIndians I heard that you can get more mileage in rain mode but I don't believe it. Thanks for the post.
@@Apockalipse i doubt its true. the modes only affect throttle response, doesnt change the tune or AFR in anyway,
Do you think your stage 2 cams and tune effected MPG?
Not for certain because the cams were installed before I even picked up the bike but my guess is about 2 MPG reduction. This is based on my experience with the 116
I pushed my 2018 Road Glide Special to 290 miles and pulled into the gas station. Not sure how far I could have gone before running completely out.
I’m willing to bet you were pretty darn close to running out
@@TwoIndians I am sure It was so I didnt push it anymore
Do you have the stage 2 cams in your Indian?
Yes I do.
Hey. I'm considering buying a Challenger Dark Horse. I like it over the Chieftain, because it's water cooled, but I don't really like the big fairing of the Challenger. I have an idea of changing the fairing to the one that's on the Chieftain. Considering they have pretty much the same electronics, it shouldn't be a big deal. Just have figure out how to mount it. What do you think?
One is frame mounted and one is fork mounted, I wouldn’t even begin to recommend that. I was up in the air about the fairing myself TBH but once you get in the seat you don’t care how big it is. It’s an amazing bike and I highly recommend.
@@TwoIndiansWow, thanks for replying! Yeah, I know the Chieftain fairing is fork mounted, but I didn't think it would be much of an issue, other than figuring out how to mount it - I'm pretty sure the fork and its angle are similar. I do know that the handling at higher speeds might be affected, but I'm not sure how big of a difference that would really be. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation! I'm going through your Challenger videos right now, and now I have no doubt that it's a right bike for me. Thank you!
There is talk behind the scenes that a fork mounted fairing PP108 bike will be coming out one of these days. We all expected it sooner but then...COVID...you know. Who knows what the truth is these days. This bike is so stable at any speed its phenominal
@@TwoIndians Don't do that 😁. Don't give me hope 😁. But, seriously, I would love that. That being said, I'm not a typical bagger guy, to be honest. For example - I don't like the speakers in the fairing. (Or speakers on a motorcycle in general) If I did swap in the fairing from the Chieftain, I would probably get rid of the speakers, and put some kind of compartments in there. Maybe use the Challenger cubbies somehow.
All beautiful bikes. Do you think the Indian is a better overall bike than the Harley?
There are pros and cons to each one. The Indians have a better ride and more comfort and more power (at least in the Challenger) in stock form right off the showroom. The Harley’s have better paint (by a mile) and better tech (in some aspects) and have far more variety. Harley has more aftermarket options but Indian is catching up very quick. When I bought my first Indian I compared the Road King to the Springfield and there was not even a comparison. To answer your question, my opinion, is that yes, they are better bikes.
What kind of eyewear you wearing? They look nice
Those are WileyX frames. Love them. I will tell you though, Wal-Mart has a generic brand that ain’t too shabby either
Where did you buy that fuel can at?
hey man, Amazon! amzn.to/3CYCv3p
Running your bike low on fuel isn't really bad on the engine, but it is absolutely terrible for the fuel pump and you better hope your fuel filter is in good shape otherwise you'll suck up dirt snd clog up your fuel injectors. Looks like it was a fun day trip, though.
I tried a few different ways. My best fuel mileage was at 85. I was able to get into the 50's
That bizarre. My fuel mileage drops like a rock above 83
It's reassuring that you've got 50 plus miles to find a petrol station, I wouldn't want to push my Chieftain!
You gas mileage on your challenger is much better than mine was and I never rode over 75 mph. Consistently I averaged 32 mpg while my harley with a 114 averages 42 riding the same roads and trips.
For reference I’m running an Indian stage 1&2 with the Lloydz tune.
Why did you switch from the RVS tune?
The tank is supposed to be 6 gallons. Every time the low fuel light comes on I am usually only able to add 4 gallons, so it says low fuel early. It freaked me out the first few times
Precisely why I did this. If you run to exactly where you’re supposed to run out you still have over a gallon in the tank.
Ir at close to sea level, try that in Colorado and results will be much different, also if you had 6 gallon gas on a 150cc bike, ur overall distance would be 4-500miles lol
Oh definately. We we were in CO last summer and my mileage went way up!
I was just told at a demo ride that a Pursuit can get 46 mpg if you control the right hand and cruise at 70 mph.
i dont doubt it one bit. remember I have a perfromance cam and tune on mine
@@TwoIndians you forgot your heavy right hand too.
I wonder if the mileage would be better in standard mode. But you were just cruising so it might not even matter.
right, it doesnt matter whether youre in sport mode or standard. those modes only affect throttle response, excellent thought though
What is the brand of the fuel bottle you have? Thanks!
Oh gosh, I don’t know. Got it on Amazon for like $12
@@TwoIndians thanks. I’ve seen the small cans that fit in the back of the saddlebags that are around $50.00 which seems expensive to me for a gallon can. 😳🤑
@@erniemorgan471 Looked to be an MSR bottle.
I'm not a mechanic by any standard but doesn't riding with such low fuel put a big strain on the fuel pump?
I would love to do this experiment just was not my machine
A few people have made similar comments but the reality is that no manufacturer is going to release a product that’s gonna knowingly fail on the probability of running out of gas. I mean it’s just crazy to assume that simple act will cause a failure. Would sit there and continually crank the motor with no fuel? Of course not. Running out of gas is not some wild crazy scenario.
On my HD i have a Analog Fuel Gauge and a Idiot light....When the idiot light and the Fuel Gauge gets to a 1/4 tank....I am looking for Gas...I dont F around and push it....
Whatever works for you bud! Thanks for watching.
Won't hurt the engine running it dry but it's very bad for an EFI fuel pump
So if the the bike shuts down isn’t that protecting the fuel pump? Curious about how damaging it really is to have an electric pump running for less than 20 seconds with no fuel. I mean it’s not like it’s a catastrophic failure right?
The faster you go the more fuel you use?
That what gears and revs are about.
Well yes LOL, we know that. It was more of a test to see how far we could get at an average rate of speed. We weren’t hyper-miling this
K1600gt with the 7 gallon tank! 300 miles is easy to hit
I have gone 315 to a gas station.
Yeah a buddy of mine rides one, it’s a mile eating beast.
@@TwoIndians it's funny, when riding with my sport bike friends, I only put 4 or 5 gallons in the tank. Otherwise the gas stops don't line up.
I think Indian wants you to read low and 0 when the fuel pump becomes exposed... You run it dry and the last 40 miles you have a red hot fuel pump in that tank..
Explain to me how having a gallon and a half of fuel is running it dry?
Anytime the submerged fuel pump is not submerged it will start to overheat. Fuel in the tank cools it. Run the fuel totally out and you have one HOT fuel pump...@@TwoIndians
Empty is when the fuel pump begins to be exposed.. That is why you are supposed to have a gallon left when the gage reads empty.@@TwoIndians
bikes with a Barker loungers on the back always look weird to me.
I think it’s Barco-lounger.
And we added those trunks for our trip to Sturgis
I'd be more worried about your fuel pump burning up instead of your engine, when a fuel pump doesn't have fuel, it's sucking air and overheating.
youre the second person to mention this and I appreciate your concern but as soon as soon as the fuel ran out the bike shut down and I'd be willing to bet the pump is resilient enough to with stand about 10 seconds of intermittent air/fuel vacuum.
160 mile range don’t seen very good… I get 180-200 on my 2007 street glide.
Ok well clearly you didn’t watch the video 🤣🤣🤣
@@TwoIndians clearly I did cause you went like 230 some miles before that thing finally shut down but I commented at the beginning of the video and you think with the money they waste on those bikes they’d have more accurate technological information. 🤷🏻♂️
The Indian system is clearly not certified.
Certified in what and by whom? 🤷🏻♂️ I think all manufacturers have discretion in how they want to display your estimated fuel range but IMHO they should be way more accurate and not play games with it. I’m an adult, give it to me straight right? 😉 thanks for watching!
@@TwoIndians the mileage to empty would be certified and calibrated at the factory too meet EPA estimates you seen . 50 miles after it’s telling you you should be out, shows it’s way off.
Run it at 70 and you'll get your 39 mpg. But who runs at 70
Only in a 55, hahaha
@@TwoIndians haaaaaaa

And a Kawasaki Concourse and multiple other bikes. But they also beat many other bikes 🤷🏻♂️
The only thing the Harley will win.
Win what exactly?

@@TwoIndians Wins the distance, because the Challenger smokes Harley in every category.
my buddies ultra says that it can over 300 miles and i said ur ultra is crack
Dad Democrat burn 🤔
I want to eat some of them vittles ❤
Dad Democrat burn?
When your fuel pump burns up, don't blame the Indian..
Running out of fuel will not burn up a fuel pump.
@@TwoIndians fuel keeps the pump cool..
@Michael Bell if it were boosted or a high horsepower build id agree, but in this case the engine would shut off due to lack of fuel before enough heat could build up in the fuel pump to damage it. Only takes a few moments to run out of fuel. Now if he ran his bike dry once a week, then thats a different story 🤘 cheers mate ride safe
@@michaelbell3915 this was only a problem wayyy back in the days when fuel injection became a thing. The only way it could be an issue today is if someone was building a fuel system themselves and they don’t know what they’re doing.
did the mosquitoes get in your mouth?
