My head-canon, for the best part of a decade, has been that The Doctor spends his time protecting earth because he wants to keep it safe for his granddaughter Susan, and this season has been the closest the show has come to confirming my theory.

I feel like the moment with the Doctor talking about Susan's parents was the Doctor being enigmatic. It's been mentioned multiple times in New Who that Doctor has children (I know that doesn't mean any of those children are Susan's parents) but then that begs the question of if Susan is a post Time War grandchild then how did she end up on pre-Time War Gallifrey to steal the TARDIS on Gallifrey (like we saw in The Name of the Doctor) and didn't know about Daleks etc. I just feel like it was the Doctor / RTD being purposefully enigmatic.
