You feel a connection because that's when dancing was an art form. Just watching the dancing tells a story. Unlike today, where every woman pretty much does the same move (twerk) bending over, and the guy with his hand on her hips/waist, practically dry humping (and calling it dance). You have an appreciation for real dancing and movement to the rhythm. I was born in 79, yet feel a connection to this more than 90s and beyond.

I was shocked about the tragic death of longtime creator of "Soul Train" Don Cornelius. After 35 seasons, I wish the show could be bringing it back on syndicated TV after a 2006 final goodbye. My favorite moment on the show was when Don made a plan to put rap, dance, and R&B to the next level in the late 80s, and I saw a first rap performance by LL Cool J. After he left the show in 1993, there were a lot of changes including the new host idea and the scribble board, but the Soul Train line was a phenomenon. I was watching Charlie's Angels The Movie and there was a scene where Cameron Diaz was doing the Soul Train line dancing to the song "Baby Got Back." That was so hilarious. I missed the show very much and my hearts go out to Don's family and friends. And as he said for the final time in his famous quote: "I'm Don Cornelius. And as always in part, we wish you Love, Peace, and Sooooooooulllllll! My favorite Soul Train theme songs was "Soul Train's a Comin'" by O'Bryan, "TSOP '87" and "TSOP '89" by George Duke and from the 1987-1989 seasons and the 1989-1993 seasons, "Know You Like To Dance" by Naughty by Nature and from the 1993-2006 seasons and "TSOP 2000" from 1999 to 2006 by Dr. Freeze.

Soul Train is a huge part of me. I remember watching it with my older brother and older sisters. Those days were so fantastic! My older siblings were born in the 1970s, I was born in the 80s and raised in the 1990s. And I am not ashamed of it. When I was a little kid, I loved the train dance. When I was in my teens, I just wanted to get in there and dance with those girls. Such a great time that was. Just dancing and enjoying the music without a care in the world

I remember when “Soul Train” started in Chicago in 1970. It started in a small studio in the Board of Trade Building in the south Loop. They used the music from the first intro shown here, but they used video of an actual train. I think it was in 1972 when Cornelius took the show to Los Angeles and put it into syndication.

Supposedly when MFSB released the single version of "The Sound of Philadelphia," Don Cornelius refused to let the Three Degrees sing the "Soul Train" line on it. or make any references to the show. He later admitted that that was not one of his better decisions. The Three Degrees got the last laugh, though; their version with the "Soul Train" chorus ended up on one of their albums.

Great memories. What I am constantly amazed at is that neither Soul Train nor American Bandstand were exclusively black nor white. The Train had white kids and AB had black kids. And all enjoyed the show regardless. I have watched my share of Soul Train back in the day. Once Don Cornelius gave up the hosting duties, that was it for me. Also, the inclusion of rap, which DC was staunchly against, caused him to really step back from the show. And as the show got raunchier with lyrics and fashion, Don was increasingly uninterested.

I was born in 83 so I missed Soul Train in its heyday. I didn't start watching regularly until around 94, 95, couple years after Don left. I stopped watching a couple years into Shemar Moore's run. I still have no idea who tf that last guy was, lol

I qiut watching it when Don Cornelius stopped hosting it. The music went downhill, as far as I'm concerned hasn't stopped sliding. People stopped singing, and can't produce their own music. They're all copycats.😒😒

The thing was Don was the cool dad to the African-American boomer kids, who were into R&B and disco. When rap came along, it was equivalent to punk music for Gen X-ers, being from the streets and very unconventional. Plus, MTV and BET came along.

      Oh yeah
      His name was Dorian Gregory
That's when I stopped watching ST, the train was tired, didn't like the awful dreadful theme music, it wasn't no longer "the hippest trip in America" anymore then in 2006 the train called it quits and was derailed for good.

It was almost exclusively black ppl in the early 70s- like the first 4-5 years of Soul Train. You can definitely see that.

In Philly, Soul Train was one of two shows that aired on all four of the big UHF channels at some point. First on the old WKBS Channel 48. When that station went black in 1983, it switched to WTAF/WTXF Channel 29. In 1990, ST then went to WGBS/WPSG Channel 57, even when it became a UPN affiliate in 1995, then in the late 1990's or early 2000's, went to WPHL 17, which by then, was a WB affiliate, where it finished it's run. The only other show that did that here was a show it shared the initials ST with, Star Trek.
