@@ForumArcade It looks like they made the car AI better at untangling itself after a miss. You can dodge a car but the window to run before it takes another go seems smaller.
Yeah, especially the jiggly movements. It gives off the feeling of players mashing their A and D to keep the car going straight and not a smooth AI car going from point A to point B.
I love how this game is stress-inducing without any monsters or spooky mascots. Just trying to avoid being flattened by a metric ton of steel that’s driving at you with malicious intent.
This reminds me of another car horror game, though iirc it does have actual cosmic horror aliens in it, and you are driving instead of walking being pursued by cars

I could image some people hold up in a bunker and the cars know they're in there. They block the entrance and exit and mini motorcycles back up to the vents to flood the air system with exhaust. They sit idling for days.

The game needs a stealth segment where the cars use their headlights to search for the player. It would subvert the light=good horror trope perfectly.
I don't think it would. in this game you basically feel yourself fine while you are in light or not. Mane thing here is level geometry - open areas are bad, corners are bad, obstacleas are good, able-to-get-on obstacles are even better. But what headlights would be actually good for - a feeling of a chase.
I often go home after work at night by walk and part of my walk is roadside. you can't imagine how it feels, when you notice, that movement of light spot and your shadows looks odd, and it seems like a car doesn't goes by.
In a lot of games, lights are used to represent the cone of vision of the enemies. So it wouldn't be the first time

Cars are deadly and this game really nailed it. This game's so scary because it's not a monster grabbing you that ends in a game over, it's a car hitting you. So as long as you don't get hit, you'll survive. But with the many times you nearly get hit, and the way cars don't despawn and continuously chase you, that adrenaline and fear don't go away. You can still hear the car in the distance. You look over your shoulder and the car's right behind you.
I never realized how scary car's could really be until now.. but I would absolutely love for the full game to release it'll be awesome!

Well it's probably because you know that these cars will try to run you over
while in the real world you don't know if a car is just driving by or is going to kill you or have someone try to jump you
That's why if you replay a horror game over and over you'll learn how the monster works and, in turn, will lessen the scare factor
Where as a hooded dude walking towards you, you don't know what will happen.
TLDR:
Knowing what will kill you is not as scary than not knowing what will kill you

I remember watching a movie about this concept it was made in the 80s or 90s, but it was ALL machines were trying to kill people lawnmowers, batting cage ball launchers as well as vehicles. Nice concept very funny and scary at same time

Cool, so you become a matador but with cars. Interested in how they'll make this into a full horror game.
I think really the only mechanics that need to be added are a leaping dive to get out of the way of a car at the cost of a few seconds being unable to move, and either a set car health where the cars would essentially die from crashing into too many objects or have it be a collateral damage mechanic similar to GTA. It would make the gameplay feel a lot better because some points are just hoping and praying the car AI doesn’t just immediately course-correct and hit you at kill speed.
This game is such a horrifying concept, if cars suddenly became sentient and started hunting us?? The way they use their headlights to blind, chills. The ai for this game is also incredibly good

I don't know if I should point this out... but you don't need sentient cars for this to happen-- you just need a driver who's intent on murdering you with their car lol. I'm quite weary of speed cars, even if I'm on a pedestrian walkway or not on the road-- there's no guarantee that they won't try to ram me instead, for whatever reasons. Insanity doesn't need a rationale after all.
Rather than being sentient, an enemy government managed to hijack the cars and programmed their AI to to cause mass mayhem.
With the auto-driving car technology, I'd expect to see some Toyota's ramming at everyone at some point because of a programming error or something.
This is where I tell you all about that Canadian movie involving sentient trucks.

Ah yes, finally, a game where you get to see what its like to be a pedestrian in any city.
This is *quite* the step up from the gamejam version. Aside from the upgraded visuals, you got car piles buried in snow depicting a war zone, the cars have weight to them and bounce according with how they drive, they'll leave tracks in the snow, show visible body damage as they collide, and the cars having a one track mind to run you over by any means keeps them intimidating. All that's missing is some kind of slowdown or listing that develops the more often these cars make an impact
WOAHH! So glad the dev continued this game, thought I'd never see it again and I really enjoyed the concept of it all 😆🔥

Pretty cool to see how they implemented it.
Great catch there! The difference would be in Maximum Overdrive, we get to see what is controlling the vehicles, and it this game, it's a mystery, at least for the time being. Whether a fan of scary dreams of being chased, or a fan of stalker movies of being chased (Max Overdrive, The Duel, etc), the concept for this game is simple & effective, and hopefully provides plenty of level differentiation to keep players playing. A multi-player mode would be cool, with more vehicles deciding who they're gonna chase!

Yep - this was great. I remember that original and this seemed even more fun - for the cars lol. The premise is so simple, but the different environments make each run seem fresh. It's fun to watch and looks very fun to play. Looking forward to the full game!
The way that those cars' turns were so sharp and precise was one of the fastest ways to build anxiety watching a Manly video (or just being in that scenario IRL because holy moly, you need to bob and weave)

so if the witches house-thing is from before that, there's a slight chance i might not have seen it..

I’m already afraid of cars, so this was peak horror for me lol I also love that it doesn’t depend on music to aid in the scares.
The nighttime setting and resulting challenging field of view really nails home the frightening experience! This would actually be a total nightmare in real life if suddenly (say you're walking to you car in a huge lot after closing up shop at the mall or wherever), and some killer cars (with killer drivers?) come trying to mow you down. Your brain would only have seconds to process the reality of the situation before you realize you're already running for your life.

Watch the final boss be a freakin tank. "but tanks are so slow!" I hear you say. 50kph isn't slow when you're running on foot and it just plows through all obstacles.

i think this game peaks in horror, because there's a very close comparison of it to irl, which is imagining a crazy guy trying to hit you with a damn car, this is realistic to some extent and it's absolutely horrifying

I like how trees appear as a good obstacles in this game.
Despite how they appear sometimes, trees absolutely turn cars into scrap metal.
That being said, I love how eerie it is. Also the splatter of blood on the windshields. The atmosphere, the sound design.. I love how it all comes together! And, what I find scary about this is the idea that a car, so long as it has fuel, will never get tired.

I swear to God this was a recurring nightmare that I had while growing up!
I would always wake up in a cold sweat and panicking after the cars would hit me.
I loved this the first time you played it. there is something extremely unsettling about sentient cars just trying to run people over.
This game is great, it satisfies that primal urge to see big, fast things demolish each other, with the sprinkling of horror that they were aiming for _you_
i really LOVE how you cannot idle even for a moment in this game. that's very... realistically horrifying. you would not have time to idle in MANY situations the horror games put the player in yet it's rarely represented in the actual gameplay.
somehow this is more anxiety inducing than running from a monster
The most effective horror is oftentimes what's closest to reality - I think the fear of getting hit by a car sticks close to everyone.
I remember watching Manly play the game jam version, and I'm so happy their working on a full game.
This is such a great concept, and the execution is marvellous. The AI is really well done, and the fact that the cars skid around and don't have the best handling is not only realistic, but it gives the player a chance to work against their weaknesses while still proving to be difficult.
With the diversity of vehicles the dev has at their disposal, the possibilities are endless.
Can't wait for Manly to play the full game! :O

On paper, it seems bizarre. Funny, even. In execution, it sounds terrifying. Love what the developer/s did.

This is probably one of the most entertaining horror games to watch- the fear of being chased by something bigger and faster than you is definitely there, but there is something comical about watching these cars do some crazy drifting and crash attempting to run you over. But also! Still alarming to see one barrelling down at you. I hope you play the full version when it releases :)
Basically if someone took the “evil cars” cheat from Saints Row 1&2 and make a horror game out of it.

This game reminds me of Maximum overdrive. A Stephen king movie about machines (cars) come to life after (I think a meteor hits earth? I saw it when I was very little in like 2000’s but I know it was an 80’s movie. Still this game gave me a bit of a scare watching you play it lol😂
Believe me when I tell you, I haven't felt this much anxious, anticipatory on-edgeness since the FIRST five nights at Freddy's when I was a KID. Something about this concept gets my blood pounding more than any horror has in ages, and I binge watch horror before bed. xD Weirdly effective
the part where you have to backtrack is kinda genius. the more you used the obstacles against the cars the first time around, the less cover you have the second time
It would be cool where there is like a fight where you could make a vehicle hit stuff like explosives and when you kill the vehicle, there's like flesh and bones behind the wheels and even the engine is covered by it and just turns out it's like a parasite that just slides in the vehicle, starts expanding just enough to use the vehicle, and starts killing everyone by running them over and nom nom

This legit looks exciting and interesting. My only complaint is how it’s not clear what the protagonist can climb on or not. Other than that, yea definitely looking forward to the full release

This is actually a pretty terrifying and tense one to watch, i had a very reoccuring nightmare as a little girl of being chased around by a car

This reminds me of an animated short film I saw many years back now, in which a robotic butler is taking care of people in a bomb shelter, but the people have been dead for a long time.
I was just trying to find it but couldn't. I saw a few things barking up the same tree, with machines continuing a war long after humanity died out.
I mentioned it on the other demo, but i can't explain properly how deeply this kind of game freaks me out.
I've had so many dreams over the years like this, only my brain won't let me move fast, at all.

I think they should add different levels of obstacle health. Like the RV can smash through barrels and boxes but not concrete and cars can't get past stuff bigger than a certain size, etc. Maybe a health system so they break down as they hit stuff
Cars are really scary. Walk down a street at night, and imagine someone in one of them, is looking for you, hunting you. It's terrifying. Having a car come STRAIGHT at you in an intersection, etc.
The normalcy of these cars is great, but it would also be terrifying in a silent-hill type game to have monstrous cars scream/honking at you, moving wrecks that want you to embrace them, etc taking the place of dogs/flyers in an open overworld type map.
Point being, driving horror- both behind the wheel, and as pedestrian- is GREAT very viscerally satisfying, people should make more.
The Decepticons have been real quiet since this dropped.

Kind of smart and cool that they made the whole setting in the winter because driving in the winter in those conditions actually do make the car slide like that in real life and make driving difficult, and also gives the human a chance to escape because if it was just a normal clear road, the cars will run you over in two seconds.
There is something inherently scary about this concept. A bunch of inanimate objects, vehicles that are missing their supposed pilots, in an empty, snowy parking lot, trying to rid the earth off of the only thing on it that is yet not hollow like everything else.
It's' way scarier than that Futurama's episode when those cars were robots.
But manly making npc-like sounds as he survives on the edge of hitboxes is way too funny to get scared in the end.

This game reminds me of a very special server on Halo CE I used to visit. The server exclusively featured the Blood Gulch map and no guns would ever spawn, not even on freshly-spawned players. The only way players could kill each other was by climbing into the drivers seat of the warthogs (The turrets did nothing.) and drive into other players. Only the roofs of the bases could be considered "safe," but even then nobody ever was as it was possible to pile warthogs around the base and then use collision to push a vehicle up-top.
I like how many cuts off his whatever he was about to say when he dies in game. Little edits like that make the video feel nice.

Many many years ago, I had a car drive straight at me, headlights glaring. I ran for my life, up to and between some short posts where the car could not follow, and I kept running. This game brought that back. The terror of knowing that if a car slams into you, your life is over, and you don't get to come back. This is a very effective game. I found this game terrifying.
