Namely in the Bowling Green game and the first quarter of the Indiana game, he threw some bad passes and got a couple of them picked, but he didn’t get in his head and spiral. Tight window throws, can move around, and throws darts that can piss off a defense. Just need to work on touch throws and out routes to the left side and he’ll be great.
Everything about JJ is better than Daniels, except open field running. He's gonna do right by the Vikings (as long as they don't screw him with poor support). Watch the same "All runs/All throws" video for Daniels and you won't be nearly as impressed. I think my Redskins got it wrong.

I remember several times under cousins the offense could sputter for 2 or 3 quarters before they ever got in the groove. Some games they could never get into the groove at all. Alabama had what was considered the best secondary in college football and that Bama front four was all over J.J.'s ass for much of the game. Michigan's ground game only had 133 yards on 30 carries. Take away J.J.'s 25 yards and that leaves the backs with 108 yards. So, how did Michigan win. J.J. was 17 of 27 for 221, 3 TD's, no INTs, 1 sack, a QB rating of 168.4, and 2 for 2 on 4th down. Out of his 17 completions, 10 were for 1st downs. So much for that J.J. didn't do anything in the big games lie. He made big plays against OSU. Of his 16 completions 10 were for 1st downs, and 3 for 3 on 4th down. Remember the three across the body throws against the Buckeyes. Of course you don't. By the way, J.J. had more pass attempts than Harbaugh and Brady at Michigan. So, it's not about the amount of film, it's what you gather from it. Besides talent you should look for the intangibles, high IQ, leader, winner, confidence, willpower, fearless, toughness, poise, work ethic and a dedication to becoming great. It doesn't take a lot of film to see who has the intangibles to be successful in the league if you're and astute observer.

Then you look at the replay angle and see that he had a wide open curl route to his left that he _stared down,_ a dig route of the middle he could’ve throw open if he knew how to make a second window pass, and a drag route which might not have gotten the first, but it did have a chance if thrown with the proper timing.. McCarthy has some serious talent, but some serious flaws in his game he needs to work out like throwing with anticipation, seeing windows before they come open, and hitting receiver BEFORE he makes his brake when throwing 10+ yards downfield. As a Vikings fan, I’m hoping O’Connell can hash out these kinks, but I’m also happy to see Darnold play ahead of him for a while..

That is pretty impressive to see him read the speed of defenders on some of those really tight window throws. He has all the skill and ability to be one of the top QBs in the league. It was refreshing to see the fiest 6 games of the season again where he was healthy, as a reminder of just how good this kids legs are and how he can use situational chaos to his advantage with them. Of course, he's going to get bangef up in the NFL just like in college if he overuses his legs, but I just can't stop seeing Lamar-esque play style from him
anyone who thinks he can't throw hasn't watched him. Anyone who thinks he only handed the ball off to victory as anything other than being team first is dead wrong. His footwork, mechanics, abilty to keep square to the receivers, and work off of play action is some of, if not the best in this draft. He is a leader and strives in his personal and professional life to excel. He is the real deal and is going to be a stud!!
One thing he should work on is pretty much everything he throws he tries to make it a bullet. This leads to a ton of drops that shouldn't be drops & his accuracy being sort of sprayed too high or too far outside.
Can we appreciate he did lots of things with only 333 pass att if he threw 120 ish more like Drake maye or Jayden Daniels people would say hes generational talent

To all team Owners, General Managers , and coaches: If I may be so bold as to point out something unique and very special about JJ McCarthy. Notice how, unlike most physically talented Qbs even on the pro level, and not just among the otherwise fine QBs in this draft, how symbiotically and naturally connected the field of play is to him and vice versa. He is like a Frank Lloyd Wright architectural design that merges the building in with the nature that surrounds it and vice versa. JJ is comfortable with his surroundings, his players, the opponents, the grass or playing surface itself , the yard marker personnel and the referees. There is almost a metaphysical relationship and balance to him and what is happening in the moment . The greatest NFL player in NFL history regardless of position, Tom Brady, acquired it, others like Unitas, Graham, Mahomes, too, to various degrees. There is nothing "mechanical " to him AT ALL , as is the case with even most starting QBs. JJ understands acutely where he is each snap. You will not likely see, for example, him taking a sack that takes his team just out of field goal range. His ability to improvise or act as an orchestra conductor when plays break down and then turn something that looks bleak into a gain , or a 1st down, or even a td, is most amazing . He does not lose his poise . He is consistently an athlete of great unflustered grace and good judgment . JJ is tough and wben you combine all the above irrefutable FACTS and characteristics about his on field " essence" , it leads to a positive ripple effect on his teammates. He is an enthusiastic, humble, unselfish, highly intelligent and educated leader. JJ McCarthy is the best and most complete QB in the draft. He will be the 1st pick of the first round. Barring injury, he will not only have a long NFL career , but will be a superstar leading to eventual NFL championships. He is Mister Clutch, a cold blooded assassin on the field that he commands . a good QB that is literally in the best position of all the QBs that were drafted. I don't know another QB that will have so many weapons, a decent O line and a great QB coach to help them transition. Personally, I don't feel he starts unless the coaches REALLY feel he is ready, because it's not needed. While I don't believe in Darnold's abilities and QB play, he still has NFL games under his belt. I will say this: with the luck of the Vikings, JJ gets injured in preseason and Sam Darnold leads them to a playoff win and now the Vikings are stuck in a dilemma. That sound about right? I feel the Vikings are cursed, they haven't sniffed a SB since the late 70s, coming up on 50 years, so I will curtail my enthusiasm and wait and see what the kid can do in the pros. I will set my expectations low for now.
Hes only 21. He will imrpove and be in the top half of the league his first year starting if he sits a year. After that once he matures, he will have a real shot a being a top 10 qb.

The Pac 12 plays no D and TX had one of the worst secondaries in CFB. Penix will look like he did in the national championship game against Michigan. Daniles might be good if he has great WR like he did at LSU

Not the most athletic guy in the draft but seriously accurate and uses the middle of the field. This is why the Broncos are high on him. But is he worth mortgaging the future again when they might be nearly as good trading back and getting Bo Nix who is more athletic and a stronger runner ? Broncos might be better off to lose this competition to the Vikings and not give away the farm again for this guy.
Its a tough situation bc his defense, OL & run game were so stacked that they'd already be up 30 in the 3rd. Will have to project his tools, because they hid him in the big time competitive games.
If you edit an entire game to only include the action from snap to tackle, the entire video will only be 20 minutes long. A 3½ hour game has over 3 hours of commercials and filler lol.
@@RB-.- Wrong! When you have a defense like Michigan's you don't need to throw it all over the yard. Just eat the clock, shorten the game, keep the opposing offense off the field (remember the 8-minute drives), wear down the opposing defense, get a lead and sit your starters, saving them for the big ones. This lessens the chance of your star players getting injured. Though J.J. was still hampered by a knee injury which made it painful to plant and throw. Michigan was up by 30 because of J.J. not the run game. They didn't hide him in the big games he was hampered by an injury from PSU to Bama, but still made plays in spite of it. Most of Corum's touchdown were from inside the 5 yrd line. It was J.J. who drove Michigan down there with his arm and occasionally his legs. The OL and run game were not as good this year. Now, teams did stack 8 in the box all year to make J.J. beat them and he did. The backs only had 4 individual 100-yard games, Corum 3 and Edwards 1(beginning at PSU). MICHIGAN AVERAGED 169 YARDS PER GAME IN 2023, 239 IN 2022, AND 214 PER GAME IN 2021. You were fooled by the big runs in the big games due to the 9 blockers on the line of scrimmage to free up the backs. Without J.J. doing his thing Michigan doesn't win the natty. He had 10 passing first downs against OSU and Alabama. You apparently didn't watch any Michigan games. Michigan's backs had 108 yards rushing against Bama, while J.J. was 17 of 27 for 221 yards, 3 tds, no ints, and 1 sack with Bama's front four coming at J.J.s like gang busters. Michigan's o-line could not block them. They were on his ass, but he kept making plays.
Based on his athleticism, pocket presence, and solid accuracy off platform or off script (22:43), (41:30) he would be best suited in an offense with a heavy run game to set up play action, mis-direction, and rollouts enabling him to throw on the move in short or intermediate areas with half field reads and hi/low routes. Tough runner and can avoid tackles but carries ball away from body (16:13) and will fumble (17:33) . He doesn't have great arm strength and has to use a wide base like a pitcher falling toward the front of the mound to drive the ball in tight windows (back leg 17:50). His accuracy is adequate the deeper the throw and his receivers bail him out-slowing down (14:58) (21:21), going to the ground (11:44), or turning to adjust to the throw (16:40), (19:50). NFL Comp: Baker Mayfield. I wouldn't take him before round 4, but teams are so desperate for QB's teams will roll the dice and take him much earlier than he should be.

He has had modest success but is on his 2nd team and probably not a franchise QB. The problem was with those shorter routes is it was 3rd and 14. Those open routes would have been taken down before making the first.

His film is like half the length though so hard to tell how much was asked of him though when called upon even out of rhythm he answered the bell.
It was refreshing to see the fiest 6 games of the season again where he was healthy, as a reminder of just how good this kids legs are and how he can use situational chaos to his advantage with them. Of course, he's going to get bangef up in the NFL just like in college if he overuses his legs, but I just can't stop seeing Lamar-esque play style from him
anyone who thinks he can't throw hasn't watched him. Anyone who thinks he only handed the ball off to victory as anything other than being team first is dead wrong. His footwork, mechanics, abilty to keep square to the receivers, and work off of play action is some of, if not the best in this draft. He is a leader and strives in his personal and professional life to excel. He is the real deal and is going to be a stud!!

One thing he should work on is pretty much everything he throws he tries to make it a bullet. This leads to a ton of drops that shouldn't be drops & his accuracy being sort of sprayed too high or too far outside.

If I may be so bold as to point out something unique and very special about JJ McCarthy. Notice how, unlike most physically talented Qbs even on the pro level, and not just among the otherwise fine QBs in this draft, how symbiotically and naturally connected the field of play is to him and vice versa. He is like a Frank Lloyd Wright architectural design that merges the building in with the nature that surrounds it and vice versa. JJ is comfortable with his surroundings, his players, the opponents, the grass or playing surface itself , the yard marker personnel and the referees. There is almost a metaphysical relationship and balance to him and what is happening in the moment . The greatest NFL player in NFL history regardless of position, Tom Brady, acquired it, others like Unitas, Graham, Mahomes, too, to various degrees. There is nothing "mechanical " to him AT ALL , as is the case with even most starting QBs. JJ understands acutely where he is each snap. You will not likely see, for example, him taking a sack that takes his team just out of field goal range. His ability to improvise or act as an orchestra conductor when plays break down and then turn something that looks bleak into a gain , or a 1st down, or even a td, is most amazing . He does not lose his poise . He is consistently an athlete of great unflustered grace and good judgment .
JJ is tough and wben you combine all the above irrefutable FACTS and characteristics about his on field " essence" , it leads to a positive ripple effect on his teammates.
He is an enthusiastic, humble, unselfish, highly intelligent and educated leader. JJ McCarthy is the best and most complete QB in the draft. He will be the 1st pick of the first round. Barring injury, he will not only have a long NFL career , but will be a superstar leading to eventual NFL championships.
He is Mister Clutch, a cold blooded assassin on the field that he commands . He is a once in a generation athlete . Think Caitlyn Clark or Jordon or Larry Bird or Charles Woodson or Babe Ruth. Any team that needs a QB best draft this young champion or else they will forever rue the day their blind incompetence caused them to pass up on a can't miss athlete when he becomes " The Franchise" level quarterback. a good QB that is literally in the best position of all the QBs that were drafted. I don't know another QB that will have so many weapons, a decent O line and a great QB coach to help them transition. Personally, I don't feel he starts unless the coaches REALLY feel he is ready, because it's not needed.
While I don't believe in Darnold's abilities and QB play, he still has NFL games under his belt.
I will say this: with the luck of the Vikings, JJ gets injured in preseason and Sam Darnold leads them to a playoff win and now the Vikings are stuck in a dilemma. That sound about right?
I feel the Vikings are cursed, they haven't sniffed a SB since the late 70s, coming up on 50 years, so I will curtail my enthusiasm and wait and see what the kid can do in the pros. I will set my expectations low for now.

The Pac 12 plays no D and TX had one of the worst secondaries in CFB. Penix will look like he did in the national championship game against Michigan. Daniles might be good if he has great WR like he did at LSU

Not the most athletic guy in the draft but seriously accurate and uses the middle of the field. This is why the Broncos are high on him. But is he worth mortgaging the future again when they might be nearly as good trading back and getting Bo Nix who is more athletic and a stronger runner ? Broncos might be better off to lose this competition to the Vikings and not give away the farm again for this guy.

@@RB-.- Wrong! When you have a defense like Michigan's you don't need to throw it all over the yard. Just eat the clock, shorten the game, keep the opposing offense off the field (remember the 8-minute drives), wear down the opposing defense, get a lead and sit your starters, saving them for the big ones. This lessens the chance of your star players getting injured. Though J.J. was still hampered by a knee injury which made it painful to plant and throw. Michigan was up by 30 because of J.J. not the run game. They didn't hide him in the big games he was hampered by an injury from PSU to Bama, but still made plays in spite of it. Most of Corum's touchdown were from inside the 5 yrd line. It was J.J. who drove Michigan down there with his arm and occasionally his legs. The OL and run game were not as good this year. Now, teams did stack 8 in the box all year to make J.J. beat them and he did. The backs only had 4 individual 100-yard games, Corum 3 and Edwards 1(beginning at PSU). MICHIGAN AVERAGED 169 YARDS PER GAME IN 2023, 239 IN 2022, AND 214 PER GAME IN 2021. You were fooled by the big runs in the big games due to the 9 blockers on the line of scrimmage to free up the backs. Without J.J. doing his thing Michigan doesn't win the natty. He had 10 passing first downs against OSU and Alabama. You apparently didn't watch any Michigan games. Michigan's backs had 108 yards rushing against Bama, while J.J. was 17 of 27 for 221 yards, 3 tds, no ints, and 1 sack with Bama's front four coming at J.J.s like gang busters. Michigan's o-line could not block them. They were on his ass, but he kept making plays.
Based on his athleticism, pocket presence, and solid accuracy off platform or off script (22:43), (41:30) he would be best suited in an offense with a heavy run game to set up play action, mis-direction, and rollouts enabling him to throw on the move in short or intermediate areas with half field reads and hi/low routes. Tough runner and can avoid tackles but carries ball away from body (16:13) and will fumble (17:33) . He doesn't have great arm strength and has to use a wide base like a pitcher falling toward the front of the mound to drive the ball in tight windows (back leg 17:50). His accuracy is adequate the deeper the throw and his receivers bail him out-slowing down (14:58) (21:21), going to the ground (11:44), or turning to adjust to the throw (16:40), (19:50). NFL Comp: Baker Mayfield. I wouldn't take him before round 4, but teams are so desperate for QB's teams will roll the dice and take him much earlier than he should be.

He has had modest success but is on his 2nd team and probably not a franchise QB. Look at all the clean pockets, look at all the holes in the secondary, look how slow all these defenders are. Most of these passes aren't going to work in the NFL.

That was a sample of what the NFL is like. Go watch MMQB on the Michigan insider with Vance Bedford and Sam Webb right before the Bama game. Vance coached Charles Woodson and the great secondary on the 97" championship team. Vance really breaks down the Bama defense in detail and explains how identical it is to NFL defenses. He pretty much said the Bama secondary is the closes thing to an NFL secondary. So, J.J. got a sample of what it's like and did well. Anyway, that's why there is such a thing as coaches and practice. You act like there's no such thing as improvement. Like that's it. There's no getting better. J.J. has all the intangibles needed to be great. So, whatever improvements he needs to make he will get coached up on.
