First of all: Congratulation that you picked the official mv and not one of the several live versions. Here is why: Megitsune is kind of a programatic key song not only for Baby Metal, but for many of the all-female rock and metal bands of the last 10-15 years. Andrew Hartley, an English professor, fluent in Japanese, and a You Tuber explained Megitsune in slim 32 minutes and still didn't touch all of its aspects. Basically the song is about emancipation of the strict traditional role of girls and women in Japanese society. This message is transported not only by the lyrics, but also by the visuals full of allusions to Japanese history, tradition, literature, mythology, etc., references which normally escape non-Japanese audience, but make the song a true masterpiece. Just a simple example: Right in the beginning the singer Sue is "unwrapped" from the belt that keeps her kimono tight: She breaks free from her traditional clothes, which is a metaphor for getting rid of her traditional role as a girl / woman.
And a second hint (for every thing else you can watch Andrew Hartley's reaction): Megitsune in Japanese mythology is a female fox with magical powers, i.a. she can change herself into a woman and live in human society.
Sorry, I forgot: "the female fox can live *secretly* with humans", i.e. in a metaphoric sense she wears a "mask" which covers her real ego and personality. This is the symbolism behind the girls taking off their masks and revealing who they really are and what they really want.
And ending: When Sue pulls the mic/dagger, she says a sentence taken from a Japanese mafia movie of the 1970s, "never underestimate a girl" (in the movie the girl had killed all her male rivals). Enjoy!

"The world needs Babymetal." I can literally not agree with this more.
Great reaction. The official videos are all good and all well worth seeing, but you really can't beat live BABYMETAL with live instrumentals and live vocals. Also, that is not the Kami Band, they only play live performances. The only videos you will see them in are the ones filmed at concerts - they don't even play on the studio recordings (with one known exception - Leda Cygnus has played guitar and bass on maybe three or four of the studio recordings).
The guys waving the traditional instruments about at the back were dancers with the group run by the lady who did the fan dance in the breakdown.
'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song - they have also played it live more than any of their songs.
It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks are so prominent in the video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
There is a live performance on the Babymetal Reactor Resource channel where they played to an entirely female audience. That is is worth another reaction.

This year will be big, in 2 weeks they announce the new 3rd member who will replace Yui's spot, they have their tour with Sabaton, they want to collab with Rammstein, Maneskin and Backstreet Boys. They already talked with BSB about is casually and Su would love to collab with Rammstein.
The shrine where they filmed this music video is a place that BabyMetal fans want to visit when they go to Japan.
It's like a place of pilgrimage, I would say.

Yui and Moa considered this the most challenging song to dance to from the first album.
It made 'Doki Doki ☆ Morning' seem "soft".
Yui liked the "windmill" headbanging that the guy in the 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!' video did so much, that she asked their choreographer Mikiko to make it part of their choreography in the future.
She was very happy when that came true for 'Megitsune'.

This was filmed at an actual Shinto shrine, Asagaya Shinmei in Suginami-ku, Tokyo. The outdoor theater stage (Noh) portion scenes are within the shrine grounds and were shot at night. Because of this, they had to dance to barely audible-almost silent music of Megitsune.

Nice & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。Last year 2021, BABYMETAL performed this popular song in each and every show of 10 BABYMETAL Budokan concerts. Su's voice is matured and Moa's dance moves are more elegant, flexible, playful, and yet sharp and agitating to crowds.
In an interview Su-Metal said Megitsune was her tuning song because it includes necessary factors for singing in a well-balanced manner. So she always sings Megitsune in rehearsal to confirm her vocal condition. Su actually said "in a sense, it is a song of criterion for me". (source : Tokion Vol.7 2020-12-24).
In a popular TV program, Keiko, a lead singer of Show-Ya (a pioneer of Japanese all-female bands) and Saki (Nemophila) emphasized one thing saying "BABYMETAL is not a (ALL-female) band, but thanks to their international success many music fans in foreign countries have discovered female bands in Japan disregarding language barrier. They opened doors for us". It's true.
Su has mentioned that Megitsune is still to this day the harder song for her to sing of their whole discography, and she still uses Megitsune to adjust the audio during sound checks. You can see her doing it here for example: czcams.com/video/6Fea02B7qKU/video.html
And yeah Megitsune _(me-female marker, kitsune-fox)_ is talking about how women feel sometimes. There is several songs in the Babymetal catalogue that have this soft subtext of "hey, respect us girls a bit more!". You may have heard that they created a new genre called Kawaii Metal, where you can also include bands like Band-Maid or Ladybaby; and what most of the people might not know out of Japan is that the kawaii culture it's exactly about that in origin.
At the late 70s women in Japan were subject to very strict traditional roles, where they were expected to behave like the perfect wife (the myth of the perfect wife Yamato Nadeshiko, that casually appears in the lyrics of Megitsune too). So around that time, teenagers started to not want to follow those roles anymore, and to the surprise of the people of that generation, mid and late teenagers started to look and act childish. Writing rounded and colored letters at school, dressing like if they were younger than they were, acting childish...that way they expected men wouldn't bother them anymore considering them not good wives. It was their way to rebel against the traditional roles. So yeah, that's what the Kawaii culture is about, it goes deeper than just girls looking cute, and Babymetal is a metal band that fits itself on that cultural trend.
The term "yamato nadeshiko" is not associated with being a "perfect wife", though it is an idealized/metaphorical expression of Japanese womanhood, going back a thousand years in Japanese literature. It's always amusing to read the pop explanations of Japanese culture that appear whenever BM's "Megitsune" or Band-Maiko's "Gion-cho" etc are reacted to on English-speaking YT.
By the way, what would Western BM fans do without Du-metal's blog and Wiki? I don't know how many times Western BM fans have referred to info on Du-metal's blog in their YT comments without giving him credit. Several people do it on this page. Not all his translations are accurate, and his info is incorrect or incomplete sometimes, but Du-metal's blog has got to be one of the most referenced sources on reaction YT.

That is not a band behind them, it's a dance troupe. The dancer in the Kimono is the leader. All of their MV's use studio musicians. At the time of this video the KamiBand had not been created. They have said this was one of their most difficult dance routines. There is video with the girls talking about the making of the video.

I think all kitsunes will agree that we want to see more from BM and that we are all awaiting "the seal to be broken". One of the interesting things about BM is that you never really know what their producer (Kobametal) has planned ie OTFGK.
This video was shot in early 2013 when Su-metal was 15 and the two dancers and backing singers, Moametal and Yuimetal, were 13. The backing band are dancers (not The Kami band) and are obviously miming, but they have the same look as the Kami Band. The Kami Band are purely a live backing band which is part of the reason people recommend live Babymetal as the best.
Megitsune (vixen) is another of BM's "empowerment" songs and it subverts many traditional Japanese attitudes to women. We start with a very tradition Japanese backdrop and Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi (sash) to release her from her kimono so she can dance energetically. So right from the start BM are challenging the norms. In Japan the fox is believed to be a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to be different things in different situations and are often crying inside while they are smiling outside. Su, Moa and Yui mime wearing a mask with their hands and also putting on make up which shows how women have to hide their true faces.
The breakdown music is a classic song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom), but this is also subverted with the heavy metal riff and Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox) rather than "sakura, sakura". Also, Megitsune was written at a time when BM were breaking away from their parent idol group, Sakura Gakuin, and the Fox God is BM's patron deity so it's speculated that singing "kitsune" is expressing their growing independence from Sakura Gakuin. You've also got to include the "super lady" concept of Sakura Gakuin which is hinted at in the lyrics, but there's a bit of tension there as BM are maybe down playing it a bit and emphasizing being true to yourself.
Su's expression of female strength reaches a peak when she shouts
"Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" or "Maidens should not be underestimated", and draws a knife from her microphone.
There is a great live performance where BM sing this to an all female audience and when Su shouts this the roof comes off the place.
The song that got me into the Foxhole.... Fun cute edm dance music to lure you in with a touch of Japanese traditional music.... Then they drop you with a breakdown of a metal as fuck pig squeal nightmare.... Leave it to the Japanese to make a young girl in black and white singing in semi monotone, seem creepier and scarier than any Freddy movie... 🤘🦊🤘

fun fact, since i haven't seen any comments bringing it up yet: the word "Megitsune" means (female) fox or vixen, & the song's lyrics are all about the empowerment of women. this song is also a big part of why they're known as the fox gods & why getting into them is referred to as going down the foxhole, lol.
also, the breakdown was sung to the tune of a very famous Japanese folk song called Sakura Sakura. it's one of those songs that is so entrenched in the culture that pretty much every Japanese person knows it.

On that song (Tabidachi no Hi Ni), she is soulfully conveying the emotions one experiences when parting with close friends. You can clearly see her not needing any crazy singing techniques; she really knows how to project the emotions of the song into the listeners.

Nice reaction. Creepy continues the part where Su is combing her hair is taken from a Japanese horror film. Sorry I can't remember which movie it was in. Babymetal live is an experience all to itself. But Babymetal's music videos are amazing as well. You should check out Prof AJ Hartley for his deep dives into the lyrics and choreography of Babymetal songs. Body language is a big part of Babymetal choreography. it's part of how they tell the story of the lyrics. There's a lot to be said about this song. And you can hear some of it from Babymetal themselves. They did Babymetal reacting to Babymetal music videos. They only have a few music videos so there sadly isn't that many and they haven't done one for BMC yet. The world will be a better place when Babymetal goes back on tour.

The kawaii metal was intended for girls, so they can feel identified with the girls (Su Moa Yui) in the jpop environment (very popular in Japan back then) while they start getting a good taste in metal music. Now 9 of every 10 fans are men, including lots of old school metalheads.

Oh they will be back, lets just give the gurls and the kami band a little break even if it takes quite long and to be honest its just been a few months so lets give them a break after releasing metal galaxy and doing their 10 years anniversary last year. Lets just be patient they will be back for sure probably one of the groups/bands I'm waiting to come back other than MCR (damn covid, we could have new MCR to listen to)
