    The compressor on our AC unit went out after 30+ years and our Warranty Company was taking way too long to get it fixed. I was faced with either getting a new AC unit for the house or wait for the Warranty Company to find a replacement compressor. I decided after 3 days of Arizona summer heat to put 3 window units in. Boy am I glad I did. It took them exactly 1 month to get a new compressor for us. Since we installed them in the bedrooms, we turn the rest of the house off now and save money by just cooling down the bedrooms at night. No doubt they will pay for themselves soon. Other solutions: Make 1/4" groove in middle of wood to accept plexiglass, that way you only need to nail and glue the joints to hold the plexiglass in. Paint your MDF to prolong it's life. Screw or fasten the AC unit to the front side of the MDF or window sill, especially if unit is higher than ground floor.

    Great tutorial. Although cheaper (and probably less of a hassle to maintain) to get a window a/c, plus this solution doesn't seem too difficult for someone like me who is a novice at woodwork, I don't think I can do anything permanent to my place I'm renting.

    Im surprised with your skills you did not make it a double pane plexiglass, especially since it is a semi-permanent install. Nothing insulates better than a pocket of air. That's how you can stay warm in a house of ice in the arctic(igloos) they work by air insulation.

      +jalcaraz612 You only need a table saw for cutting the wood ledge. Also cuts plexiglass. You don't need an angle grinder or a Miter saw, since wood frame on plexiglass is totally unnecessary. Stick plexiglass into opening. Seal up edges. Done.

    Very well done video and very complete in all the necessary steps needed to do a professional installation. Tighter editing could reduce video length by 50% but no big deal. You worry me not using a push stick and guard on blade and also firing 1-1/2” brads so close to your fingers but that is your choice. 10+ on video quality and installation workmanship. Thank you for sharing, certainly will help do my project.

    I just watch the video, great tutorial, thank you. When building your platform, did you simply use 1/2 MDF? I could not tell if you made a special cut to make the platform fit the the window sill or of you build it out of layers of 1/2"
    Thanks!

    • @wildwest5d5
      @wildwest5d5  Před 8 lety +4

      Hi, 3/4" MDF is the thickness of the platform & we attached a 3/4"" x 2" piece under the front edge to give a slight downward tilt to the back side. Our window frame is just under 3/4" high. Depending on how high your window frame is, will determine how thick a piece you will need to add to get that slight tilt so that any water drains outside and not in your house.

    • @wildwest5d5
      @wildwest5d5  Před 6 lety +1

      3/4" MDF with another piece of 3/4" inside under the platfrom to account for the sliding window groove height of about 3/4".

      the only reason I used plexiglass was to try and make the whole thing not quite so unpleasing to the eye. Let's face it, some people in my neighborhood probably think that anytime you place an AC unit in your window that you are lowering the value of everyone else's home.

    Q: how did you stick the small width of riser board to the platform piece before placing it on the sill? Also, how is the platform able to tilt slightly downward outside when it is screwed in flush with the sill? Doesn't that put stress on the screws?

    • @tanawest154
      @tanawest154 Před 2 lety

      I shimmed the board from the inside of the house so it was a little higher. Then that helped it to tilt downward on the outside. That way no condensation will drip towards the inside of the house.

    • @tanawest154

    • @davidwest3669
      @davidwest3669 Před 8 lety +1

      +nick matalski I would make sure the platform is well anchored to the window sill and then place the ac unit on the platform and somehow anchor it with a few 3" screws through the platform and into the window sill. That way even if the window frame was broken somehow the AC unit would still be anchored down. Some people fill the upper void above the unit with plywood or plexiglass or something else that can be fixed in place with silicone or screws.

    • @MGWorldwide

So I have to sit here and bake in 100degree weather wtf. I am surprised there are not more portable window units that can be installed in slider windows. The compay I was insured with said it would take a couple of weeks to fix the AC. Well, I didn't want to fry for 2 weeks so I purchased 3 ac units. Since then my AC has acted up several times and boy was I glad to have backup. The 3 AC units can literally cool my whole 1400 sqr ft house to 72 degrees and for not much more money paid out to the power company. I do have peace of mind, knowing that I'll not fry as long as the power company is getting power to my house. Boy do I wish I could get off the Grid!
