- To commemorate 50 million views on my You Tube channel, here's one of the rare ones, never seen in public.
Bruce Springsteen's appearance on the final LNwDL was a tightly-held secret. It had been given the code name "Project X." The idea may have first taken root the year before, on April 24, 1992, included at the beginning here.
The rehearsal audio kicks in after two minutes. The band first runs through "Glory Days." Then, off-mic, Bruce and Paul Shaffer plan their call-and-response section, followed by the band briefly working out their homage to "Louie Louie."
Bruce then walks over to David Sanborn to discuss his short solo, and the band practices that segment.
Chris Albers, Paul's music assistant (and best known on the show as "Dwight the Troubled Teen"), then introduces Bruce, and we hear the band's second pass, here in full. Afterwards, more discussion, again off-mic. Bruce checks out the top of Paul's organ and asks Paul if it can support his weight. Paul nods.
Subbing for Will Lee on bass was Francisco Centeno. Will had been touring at the time with saxophonist Sadao Watanabe in Japan. He had been given the ok after being told that Dave didn't want to make a big deal out of the last show. He learned later that it was.
Despite the lack of audio, based on both Francisco's and Sid McGinnis's hand movements, the end of the video shows the band rehearsing The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," which they played as the last break music after the "Glory Days" broadcast. Bruce joins in, both during the rehearsal and show taping, which can be heard in full towards the end of this collection: • Countdown to Final LNw...
Finally, the broadcast version.
Great thanks to Anonymous for the video.
wow. I have never seen this before. today is Bruce’s 74th Birthday ----- thanks for all the thrills Bruce.
This is so fantastic! The bassist is like a little kid! Such joy. Bruce is a force! I’m a huge fan of both Dave and Bruce and I remember this night well.
Barbara Gaines and the Letterman channel here on CZcams made reference to this, and because of copyright/licensing crap couldn’t include the audio to a very short clip of this.
🤯
Don… you sir are a SAINT to every Letterman fan out there!
God bless you sir!
I hadnt seen the Springsteen appearance ever since it aired. What a special moment that was. Love the rehearsal footage, they just KILLED IT in the second rehearsal, right? I thought it wasn't going to be topped, but Bruce on the piano and that ending just clenched it. Best performance ever on Letterman for me.
I've watched this hundreds of times since it first aired and it still gives me goosebumps. A great finale to the NBC show. The show I grew up watching.
Thanks Don - great bonus material.
I love how when Paul starts the “Louie, Louie” tag before Bruce is ready, he just casually combines the two keyboard parts on the spot and rides it out for a couple of bars. I’ve watched this performance many times, but I had never noticed that miscue before.
Wow. Paul started that early at least twice. I can imagine there is never enough rehearsal time. There would be no way to know that was a mistake unless you knew that the louie louie bit was coming. Amazing vid, Don! Hope to see more BTS vids like this in the future!
Incredible! Thank you so much. And, yes, I read the description.
wow..never seen this before and didnt even know the rehearsal footage existed. thanks very much
Thanks for treasure after treasure, Don.
This is awesome Don! It’s nice to see the behind the scenes on the wonderful moment of Lat Night. Just finished the video history of Dave and Johnny too. As Dave would say: “You blew the roof off the joint” with all this great stuff. Now on to the Terri Garr history with Dave. LOL!
The world’s most dangerous band ❤️❤️
Gotta love Bruce
Thank you for this gem.
This is great - I remember seeing the show live, and totally losing my ^%&$ when Bruce walked on stage. Perfect song, too.
Apropos of nothing, I'm happy to finally learn how that late-run catwalk background for musical numbers worked. It always bothered me that it was clearly too big to be flown intact from 6A's low ceiling or stored to the side of the stage. Now I see it was split in half and hung in two different sections from the grid. Another random question answered by The Donz. Thanks!
OY! I didnt read the description before launching into this. But I was like, "Poor Will Lee", and now I just can just imagine how he must have felt when this was going on.
Anton just kills it here btw
This was really cool to see. Thanks for the upload.
Pretty damn cool, Don. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks, Don.
Cool stuff thanx boss
Thanks
this is a treat Don. COngrats on 50 Million! Jerry Foley is walking in and out of the screen too, later to become Hal Gurnee's successor. Please post more rehearsal footage!
Where do you see Jerry?
Never mind; that was Bob Rooney. :)
Did I just miss it, or did he NOT rehearse going up top late in the song?
And I wonder who knew of the surprise guest. (It was to the public at large, right? What about the show intro? You'd think the [sometimes very Jersey] Letterman audience would start shrieking before he even said the name, if they had already been told. On the other hand, the moment they did "shriek" was so simultaneously it seemed cued.)
1) re standing on the organ: Read the description.
2) re who knew: Read the description.
3) re show intro: full show at end of this compilation - czcams.com/video/L3lAF2qeYTE/video.html
Did I spot Biff in a jacket? Don't recall him dressing that nicely during the show. TIL "Biff" might have been a character he played when the tape was officially rolling.
It was the last LN.
Hey Donz, do you know why Will wasn't there for the final LN??
Nobody reads my descriptions.
@@dongiller Dammit Don, I'm a busy guy...do I have time to hit "Show More"? I look at that header comment, if I like the way it feels, I move on. But this is humbling, I'm gonna lick my wounds, and, you know what? From this day forward I'M HITTING 'SHOW MORE'. No matter how busy I am.
@@dongiller Hey Don, do you know when this aired?
@@adamnedeff3102 read the title LOL and then be sure to hit "Show more" on the description and read that too
@Pete Maimome Adam was having a funny is all.
Perhaps I’m deaf
Perhaps you didn’t read the description.
Can’t fuckin stand Springsteen, but wanted to see some of the BTS stuff. Very cool Don. Keeping good TV alive
