zumbazumba1 You want to look for Grant Thompson, The King Of Random. He did a whole series of videos on MOT spot and stick welders. He also made essentially the poor mans variac (variable ac) device. Check him out, he's a great source of ideas.

how does this get around unwanted noises?

It will pick them up as is. Circuit at 1:00 does have a rather nice network R10, R12, R13 and C9, C10, C11, C12 to limit the bandwith, but large part of the unwanted noise will be in the pass band. It'll attenuate loud clicks and other noise, which is nice. Plus due to high gain, there will be static (white noise).
