West coast hoods are not that bad, what is horrific is the mental state of the majority of citizens of California, Oregon and Washington: Democrats governments turned those states into colossal asylums. No wonder Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle have droves of homeless nowadays: almost all are mentally ill and/or addicted to an illegal drug.

My mom and grandmother were both born in Newark and my grandmother's house was in Kearny. It was close enough to Manhattan that you could see the Empire State and Chrysler buildings out the window. When I was a little kid in the late 80s early 90s Newark was a lot worse than it is now. It's only 12 miles from NYC so that helps compared to a place like Detroit.
My grandma use to live in Newark and my dad lived in East Orange. As a kid (mid to late 90’s) it didn’t seem so bad but looking back on it now after leaving NJ. It’s a SLUM!!

The writer Philip Roth was devastated by what happened to his beloved town. Visiting the apartment house of his young childhood, he pulled up in a limo. The current owner came out with a big dog. Asked Roth, "Who you supposed to be?"
Roth lived at two locations in Weequahic, on Summit Avenue near the intersection of Keer Avenue and on Leslie Street north of Chancellor Avenue. He left the area around 1957 after he completed his education and served in the Army. Weequahic was still in its heyday then. I lived a handful of blocks away from his immediate neighborhood until 1992. The area had gone downhill considerably by that time. I was in the old hood several months back. It has held up fairly well in the past 30 years, but I would be quite hesitant to venture out in that area after nightfall.
Sure, Newark has some rough areas but it's not that bad. It's actually not one of America's worse cities. Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Camden, and Trenton NJ, and many others are worse. In-fact, Newark isn’t even among the 50 worst cities in the US. Look it up. These areas this guy is ridding through are the areas where the poor couldn’t keep their homes up. These are very low-income areas that got devastated in the 2007-8 recession and before that. Newark has many great sections like the Weequaic section, the fine area where a majority-black people live, parts of the Northward, where many Italian and Hispanic citizens live, the Eastward, the Portuguese and Brazilin section, and the Vailsburg section which is like being at the UN, so many different kinds of people. These communities are great to live in so this is a distorted picture of Newark. I know, I lived there, worked there, rode those same streets for years…and sure some are rough but overall Newark is a great city in comparison to many.
