  • Cannabis is used by Americans across the country to treat all manner of health conditions, with the science backing up these health claims. But beyond the relief and euphoria that cannabis can offer, there's pushback to the legalization trend: experts say there's increasing evidence of long-term harms. VITALS host Sheena Williams debunks five surprising health-related myths about cannabis use with the help of cannabis specialist Dr. Peter Grinspoon.

    Marijuana Use Disorder
While one study estimated that approximately 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have marijuana use disorder, another study estimated that people who use cannabis have only a 10% likelihood of becoming “addicted.” The measurement and classification of cannabis use disorder as an addiction is controversial: as Dr. Grinspoon explains, “[cannabis] does help people. It helps people with anxiety, with pain, with sleep, with boredom, with loneliness…And it's not a simple thing to disentangle-you can't just write off a third of patients.”

    Cannabis Use and Schizophrenia
Using Danish health records for over six million individuals, one study found that as many as 30% of cases of schizophrenia among men aged 21 to 30 could have been prevented had they avoided cannabis use disorder. The study author, however, flagged that Denmark does not have as much diversity as the US and that genetics do play a role in schizophrenia risk. Again, a correlation isn’t enough to imply causation, but the study findings may warrant caution.

It has helped tremendously with my own anxiety, adhd lack of sleep, and whenever I’m down in general. I will say though, that kids who started regularly smoking in hs are absolutely locked in a psychological dependency. I personally don’t ever want to be that- it’s done great things for me recreationally but I know my limits.

I also feel like those who smoked at an early age do not realize what weed actually does. Your already ignorant at a young age. What’s the point of opening up new pathways when your sober self isn’t even at the point of reasoning that an adult has. Your so emotional and hormones are insane, which is why I can see why a lot of people who smoked at a young age for a long time are ignorant.
I promise if you’ve asked a bunch of potheads you never met before what’s in weed, what is THC, what does it do to your brain? What is delta 8 and what are cannaboid receptors. Not one of them would know the answer. They just know it makes the calm or gives them more energy. It’s much more then that for me. And I believe you need to be knowledgeable when consuming such a substance.
Weed is not bad. I smoke a bowl or two a day and vape it hourly. Weed is life changing, but it should not be consumed by kids. Maybe once or twice, but you should be a kid at 13/14. It’s too young to grow up because weed will push you out of the zone you would be in at that age.

I've used cannabis for 30 years now and I can honestly say that with cannabis, the rule is - less is more. Using it in excess leads to problems, so I can recommend it to anyone IF... you never combine it with other drugs such as alcohol in particular. Like everything in nature, if it's used in moderation, then you receive the benefits. If you intend to use it regularly, then I would also recommend that you keep to a regular exercise program. It can really help you with your motivation and endurance if you play sport.
Although I have used it for so long, I went for a check up recently and my lungs and heart were just fine thanks. I have experienced no other deleterious side effects at all and have just appreciated life more - so as long as it's properly regulated and kids aren't allowed to use it, then I can't see what all the fuss is about.
Anti-legalization "experts" are usually from the medical fraternity who don't want to sell less prescription poison, or stiff necked fuddy duddies who have never used it themselves before.

I worked in cannabis for two years and can say for sure, that a lot a lot a lot of people have confused "it's legal" with "it's perfectly fine to be as stoned as possible 24/7." The medical program is also a total joke: it's so easy to get a card that lots of folks get one just for the discoint bud. And what other medical field allows you to self-diagnose as well as choose the type and dosage of your medication? It's insane

I agree with you that many of the medical programs are a joke. This is why we need reliable federal regulation. Right now, the federal ban is extreme draconian nonsense, at the other end of the spectrum, are many of the medical programs you describe. There are both risks and benefits, and those risks and benefits need to be considered, and policy needs to be formed on sound data, and we need to get rid of the policy extremes.

Great episode. I was a chronic daily user for 25 years. I recently quit cold turkey 4 months ago and it was fairly easy. Just a few urges in the first few days usually triggered by routines. As someone who has anxiety I feel so much better. I am more engaged in life socially and feel more at ease. I wish that I would have tried this so much earlier. I did have some at a concert in August. And it was fun and didn’t have any urges the next day. I think I has cannabis use disorder. And was dependent on it for escape or to cope with anxiety. It turns out that I didn’t need it and it might have been causing me to be more paranoid. Just my perspective. I recently have been talking with a lot of people who are candidly sharing their quitting weed stories. So I’m not the only one.

Cannabis Nurse here! It’s important to note that Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) is rare and generally much lower than other drugs. In fact, cannabis has shown to help with other addictions.
The way it was presented in this video it made seem that cannabis CUD was significantly higher than it really is and its a problem….when its 10% of chance…
Also, when comes to withdraws, most people don’t have to worry about titrating their cannabis dose… Cannabis users can experience withdrawals without having CUD this important for people to know (which is different from say alcohol, when someone suddenly stops drinking and experience withdrawals it’s bc they are addicted).
This video was somewhat helpful, but seemed one sided….

A better way would be to repeal the federal ban on marijuana by descheduling the drug instead of merely moving it to a different, somewhat less illegal category.
That reform, which two-thirds of Americans support, would simultaneously address all the other hazards caused by the conflict between federal prohibition and state marijuana laws, including the laws that allow recreational as well as medical use in 23 states. Marijuana then would have the same status as alcohol and tobacco, widely used recreational intoxicants that are not considered "controlled" substances at all.

I used to live with my mom and only moved out because I wanted to keep smoking without having someone on my back. It came a point in my life were I looked at myself and was tired of living like that. Ones I decided to stop I started working in construction, I started actually dressing better and felt better than ever. Sadly my friends who couldn’t stop smoking MJ to this day are still smoking. Two of my closest friends live on their own in a mobile home with no girlfriends or kids and they’ve been like that for around 20 years now. One went through a depression and eventually I convinced him to stop and start with me in my job and he is happier than ever and he even became my daughters father in law. MJ is ok if you can control it but sadly 80% of people don’t. It’s a great medicinal plant when you use it for what it’s meant for but most just use it to get high let’s be real.

I smoked weed at 21, stopped at 25 for employment with random drug testing and didn't touch any type of weed until I became disabled 43 years later. My doctor's recommended marijuana for sleep and it was the best sleep I've had in decades. Unfortunately because it's still federally illegal, I can't access it as part of my treatment. Instead, I'm being prescribed medications that are less effective, come with more side effects, and are more prone to potential abuse and increased tolerance over time. The sad reality is richer people can afford better treatment options, while poorer people just have to make due with whatever they can get.

People do unestimate the risk. An old friend mine was in a very bad state (was not in good communication with their family and suspected their partner was messing with their friend). When they smoked (which they did plent of times before) paranoia manifested. They felt like everyone was out to get them even me and their own parent. Even months after that incident they said even though they knew it was true it was still in the back of their mind. Didnt help we were early twenties just out of the teens. Another thing was when i tried a friend's sibling vape. The smoke burned my lungs. The harshest smoke ive ever tried till this day. I didnt understand how they could smoke so much when it was that hot. Then it dawned on me their lungs had become desensitized to the smoke. They were damaging their lungs. That’s “normal”??? And some folks unfortunately don’t reach that point in life, and don’t get me started on how “we” trash the planet, “we” have been messing with things for too long, but I’m wrong just for getting high, and I don’t even go out of my way to get really high, just to keep my self mellow because not only because of personal stuff, but also how messed up this “man made” world has become.
