Astera Pixeltube AX1 Review & How To Use

  • I have been using the Astera Pixeltube AX1 for a few months now. I bought it for its RGB capabilities and synchronicity. Unfortunately, I was a little bit disappointed with its lack of full functionality straight out of the box. That being said, compared to the Aputure 120dii, it is extremely portable and versatile, so I still love it. How can it come with no remote control though! C'mon!

      @@JohnCastillo i do, but its one i kinda rigged at home. I use an old heat lamp with a regular bulb and a diffuser in front. it actually works pretty well

      It does! Honestly for home videos I have used my Hue lights a lot, but they flicker if I’m not on the right colour/frame rate. As much as I love them for being RGB, they’re not without flaws! I’m also a big fan of the Yongnuo 300Air for quick solutions! Works very well and it has a good CRI value.

      Personally, in retrospect I regret not getting the Titan for easy control directly on the light. But perhaps that is not a need you will have.

    You edit your dialogue audio in protools? How are you liking it? I bought it and barely use it over Logic or Ableton

    • @JohnCastillo
      @JohnCastillo  Pƙed 4 lety

      Pro Tools is my go-to digital audio workstation. Not necessarily because it's great for voice-over recording - it's really nothing special for that. It's just what has carried over from my sound engineering days. As far as recording multi-track live sessions, editing and mixing go, it is my favourite DAW. But really for voice-over recording, Garageband, Logic, Ableton, etc. would do an equally good job imo.

    You can use foamcore to make light modifiers w gaffer tape, scrims, reflectors etc for super cheap.

    • @JohnCastillo
      @JohnCastillo  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      I have actually been meaning to get some! Especially for this light, it would be useful to cut some of that spill!

      @j0hnnykn0xv1lle Pƙed 3 lety +1

      @@JohnCastillo You can use the reflectors as a 2nd light source or back light by bouncing it back at the subject too. Using one light makes you think, and makes you get creative, def not a detriment.

  • @305kubrick
    @305kubrick Pƙed 4 lety

    I just purchased two Pixeltubes. Do you happen to know if I need a remote for EACH light or can I just use one remote to control both? Especially for those scenarios in which I want to do a different effect or color on each light. Will a single remote allow me to do that.

    • @JohnCastillo
      @JohnCastillo  Pƙed 4 lety +1

      I truly do not know, but since the remote is not necessarily “paired” to begin with I would assume it is possible, not sure how easy it is though. If you have two I think it’s worth investing in the bridge, it will allow you so much more (although the price tag is unfortunate!)

      Just thought I'd circle back here to confirm that indeed a single remote can individually control multiple lights separately. You just walk up close to each light, point your remote towards it (works best if 2-4 ft. away) and select your settings for that light. Once done, you can go to the next light and repeat.

    The Asteras are truly a step above all the bargain tube lights on the market. The way they execute effects just looks high-end. If you have the cash that is lol.

    Just got one! Love the soft flood. SO ANNOYED the IR remotes are on back order and I lack the most basic control of the fixture!! (Intensity control anyone!) đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïžI totally agree that for a $450 (USD) light, it's a bit bonkers they can't throw in a $15 IR remote....That being said--do you still love the light???

  • @carlroberge7535

    You can’t control it with the Asteraapp on your phone or tablet?

    • @JohnCastillo
      @JohnCastillo  Pƙed 4 lety

      Not without the +$400 light bridge! Once you get it, you can control multiple lights at the same time, which I guess is why it’s worth the money. It’s just a bit silly to sell an incomplete product. Sort of like buying a toy when you’re a kid - and it doesn’t have batteries, haha! Very frustrating.

      On the other side, 400$ is much cheaper than a lighting board I guess

    • @JohnCastillo
      @JohnCastillo  Pƙed 4 lety +1

      Yeah. And I think you can connect the light bridge to a lighting board for further control, though I don’t have hands-on experience with that.

  • @dpjohnjones432

    One word of advice when buying Asteras is to not buy from big box stores like BH & Adorama. You cannot negotiate with them. The smaller dealers will and you can get some pretty significant discounts if you ask for a quote and work with them they will work with you.

  • @CRANEREVIEWS
    @CRANEREVIEWS Pƙed 4 lety +2

    For that kind of money they could have put a cheap ass bluetooth module into the lamp itself, but hey who will buy the Asterabox ($400) then? I mean big productions will anyways, but this would make it soo much easier for the small guys. Urgh!
