Well, Hailey now has her own Silkie chickens and a slightly overkill chicken coop. Can we go flying now??

I just got 40 chickens 1 week ago 20 meat and 20 layers , new experience for sure!
What no SimpliSafe sensors on the chicken coop? Don’t they have an option to call the game warden if dangerous predators are detected? 🤣 Interesting video and nice work matching the house design.
So I've been hearing about that SimpliSafe stuff on the radio for years. Your video finally motivated me to check it out. Yes, I did the /trentpalmer thing.
I was surprised by how cheap it is. I don't think I got a discount for using your name, but I got 20% off for a memorial day sale, and another $30 off with a Honey coupon. The whole system only cost me $276, plus I got a free camera.
Yes, I know I sound like a shill, but I'm not. I'm just a dude with a CZcams channel who tries to support other dudes with CZcams channels.
Please do not promote this product. Love your videos and happy you are getting sponsors. Do a little research on them for yourself. SimpliSafe is way to Simple to defeat. Your house is starting to become a home. Love the updates and can't wait for you to do a large fly in and get a hanger.
Which button do the chickens peck to turn it on when they leave the coop :)
They’ve got wings. So technically you’ve built the first hangar. Just have to figure out now how to hatch some KitFox eggs in your fancy egg warmer.
At this point you should just be sponsored by Ryobi tools
When he busted out the battery powered shears, I had the same thought!
Vectorical it was just a joke my friend. I just kept seeing the florescent green and thought it was funny. My dad has all Dewalt, I have all Dewalt, so I know what you mean, it just made me laugh
Got to be honest Trent, I was laughing throughout the entire video. Glad I’m not the only one!
The coop should have fencing going down into the earth a couple feet or else there should be a wire screen floor. Coyotes will dig right under the sides.
I use old cyclone fencing. Works great and sometimes you can get it for free if it is bent or damaged at the store. I go 2’ down around the perimeter and bury a piece the size of the footprint six inches down, horizontally. We have badgers, skunks and coyotes.
I agree with both these responses Trent. Put some wire mesh down around the whole outside of the coop and you should be OK.
You can also take a wire mesh fence (like a 4' tall garden fence), attach it to the sides of the coop, and then fasten it to the ground using long landscape pins (or, dig down a few inches and bury it with a bit of dirt) - easier to do than digging down 2', plus it prevents predators from attempting to dig (they can't dig through the wire fence). The way I see it, if a coyote is willing to dig down and horizontal for 4-6, and then back up', he's earned a chicken dinner. I can't take credit for that method, learned it from Carolina Coops.
Exactly what I was thinking. A yote will dig under that in a matter of mins, especially in the soil at that location.
I think a 220 volt perimeter wire would keep the coyotes at bay.
You guys were made for each other. Your wife spends $200 on three chickens and you build a chicken coup that looks like a beach condo. I missed the AC and heater installation but I suppose that is coming in another video. Happy egg frying.
Hahahahahaha this cracked me up lol
Trent you got it right. “Happy wife Happy life”. This will be our 39 year 😯

Thanks for being a good example!
Great video guys !
Thank you for sharing your journey.
If you want them to be friendly, make sure to handle them (calmly), hand feed them bugs, and interact with them at least a few days a week.
They love meal worms and like you said, interact with them a few days a week.
Machines and Things When they start following you around, it almost gets annoying though... nothing like lying on a creeper and having one looking you in the eye from 6 inches away.🤣
@@colinwallace5286 🤣
Just your opening statement makes it all, my wife signs me up for things all the time lol, but these little diversions from flying are also interesting, keep them coming! can't wait for a hangar build video :) You guys are living the dream that''s for sure!
Bro... you’re not even going to give us a tour of the completed project?? My wife was like 😟 when you just wrapped the video with no tour 😂
Same here, I want to see them in their new home! 😂
I think you will find a low temp warning on the simply safe the most valuable. If the heat goes out it will go out when you are not around. To save you plumbing and water damage. I live in the mountains I can't tell you how many homes have been saved by low temp warning.
When we bought 12 chickens, they attracted the following predators: DOGS, CATS, CROWS, PIGEONS, OWLS, RATS, FOXES AND HAWKS. Some for the feed and some for the chicken meat. Finally the foxes won. We tried so hard to maintain a free open space. All in all, it was a lot of work and a great experience. R.I.P. chickens and good luck Mrs. Palmer
You did it wrong.
Yes. We gave them a big enclosure. Anything smaller felt like a prison. Big mistake
@@meazy451 that's harsh. He did his best. Foxes will do anything they can to get a free meal even with the best intentions.
Remember it is not just "happy wife happy life", don't forget "happy spouse happy house."
Next video: Dealing with the 5:30 AM wake-up calls, or How to learn to hate a rooster.
COKKADOODLE Urkkkkkk! as Trent strangles the effer at 0FU30
Roos are more of a 24X7 thing.
Roosters crowing are actually much easier to take than a barking dog. A rooster goes silent from about an hour before sunset until an hour before sunrise, so you have a lot of peace. Also, when a rooster crows you know all's right with the world, but when a dog barks you know something is wrong, even if it's just the dog going insane with boredom.
@@hshs5756 I hate to tell you this but roosters crow all night...get used to it...I have and I luv it.
Carey Logan I thought that was only if disturbed 😳???
This is hilarious. I just went through the exact same thing. Moved our chickens in yesterday. I called ours a chicken palace too as it took 3 weekends to build, complete from scratch and cost us nearly $500 by the time it was all done. I'm glad we did it in the end, but so much more work than I figured! Told my buddies I was working on a hanger for things with wings but not for planes. Digging these around the home videos while you, and many of the rest of us, are stuck at home in quarantine.
When we moved to Ramona CA, I had to put in a chicken coop for my wife. Not very big, about 60 birds between the hens, chicks, roosters pheasant and turkey. We called it the “Ramona Chicken Ranch” and had a picture of our first three ladies on the hood of a tractor with the title “The Ladies”.
Marriage is a series compromises that ultimately lead to doing it her way :)
Damn straight jack
I did it my way. NOT
You said it all, Bro!
I would rather be single than put up with that
@@davidfw190 better put up with that than loneliness.
Came for the aviation, now all I get when i come to this channel is house updates and chickens..
Yeah it's called what else goes on in their life. Don't get me wrong I love the flying but knowing they are everyday people is nice too. There are plenty of all aviation channels and people to follow.

Feeling this! I have built three coops for my wife. The last one has a dam chandelier in it. Ours free range during the day. Got to have one rooster, keeps the girls in line and he does his best to protect them. Our current rooster won’t eat until his girls have. He calls they come running.
One of your best non flying videos. You two stay safe. We all love you both.
The Trent Palmer version of "Fly Away Home" part 1. Chickens are STOL for sure!
You can have "a" rooster, I actually prefer it. They watch over your flock for buzzards and the like. Being the only male they should be pretty docile to. But, if you have a second male it'll get mean fast.
Chicken soup time.
Then chicken and curry.
I think you meant hawks; buzzards would never bother a chicken unless it was already dead. Coyotes will be a problem, but all of my experience has been that neighbor's dogs are THE biggest threat.
I'm not sure why they're raising chickens, but if they're raising chickens for eggs, isn't it a problem having a rooster, as you want unfertilized eggs?
Coyotes and foxes will dig under that we nailed chicken wire 2 feet out all around the base and raked some dirt into it and let the grass grow and solved our problem
@@Phyde4ux You can eat fertilized as well as unfertilized eggs, no difference. But roosters are so lax about properly completing a sex act it's a wonder the species survives. Penises work MUCH better!
My mom had my dad build a Chicken shed. now he calls it Cluckingham palace.
It must be the year of the chicken, my wife decided the same thing only we're splitting 14 chickens with a neighbor and they are 2.5 years old. But it has to be a grander project. Floor 2' off the ground, 60 sq ft hen house, 210 sq ft run, and deep litter method, on not leveled ground. Working on the weekends around rain. Hopefully with extra help today it'll be to a functional state.
Back in the day my mom did this same thing to my dad, and I, as the oldest kid, had to take care of them 🙄 good times.
Its all fun and games till dad says to go out and butcher them after they stop laying eggs.
On a plus note, if you dare let your chickens "free roam" your property, you can kiss all the local Scorpions goodby.
See? It's not all bad.
A buddy put a guillotine style door on his coop, and the chickens went in at night before a timer closed the door. Pretty neat set up.
Trent I did the same thing some years ago, I found keeping chickens to be interesting, entertaining, challenging and far more rewarding than I ever expected it to be. I learned a lot about life and community and animal behavior it was really a good experience plus fresh eggs! It's good you had the forethought to include a brooding box, I had to add one as an afterthought after they began to hatch on their own. If you have one rooster you'll get your chicks for free!
Great vid! Love seeing this kind of stuff too! Keep it up Trent, us Pilots out of work need content to watch haha
Nice job on the chicken condo Trent. My wife has been hitting me up on wanting chickens also. Guess I'll have to get us some. ;)
7 chicks, $750...sounds like a “cheep” date😆
Trent, we are so excited for you guys! Awesome job building the coop! I had some great memories raising chicks and all kinds of fun animals in Utah. I didn't see the foundation so I am leaving a recommendation: we lost a lot of animals to predators like coyotes, foxes, raccoons, etc. because the predators would dig into or underneath the coop and pull our animals out ... it was always gruesome. We learned the sad and hard way but to help prevent this from happening look into surrounding your coop with a 2 ft wide apron of hardware cloth, chicken wire or other durable mesh. Bury it about 12-18 in below the surface. That will frustrate and stop them. Love your videos, thanks for sharing!
King & Queen of the Chicken Palace. I'm very impressed by your choice of structure and execution. It's illuminating to see that talented people go about everything they do with the same visor and eye for detail. It really is a very stylish, complementary edition to your property - although I must confess the next piece of construction I was expecting to see was a hangar. If the hangar i's half as good as "The Palace" it will be worth the wait. Looking forward to the eggs for breakfast update too !
Chicken coop?....more like a "chicken condo", brand new!..."that's mighty fine Clark, mighty fine!" (as in Clark Griswold).
Remember: They're edible dinosaurs. If it weren't for a large asteroid, they'd be raising and eating you. :)
I love the color scheme of the house and chicken “palace”.. it has nice clean look with like a metallic mechanical feel to it!
Been there, done that. My better 3/4 wanted chickens and coming from three generations of carpenters I over built a chicken McMansion. 2x6 insulated walls, steel door (salvage) heater, wired for lights and an remote chicken hatch. This thing was on skids so we could move it around and had a wire enclosed detachable 8x16 foot run. Yours turned out very nice, Trent!. Like RG says, ‘if your lady can’t find you handsome be handy’.
Words of wisdom from a married man...: "Happy wife... Happy life". I second that motion!
Plane Simple The whole time he explains the “why” all I can hear is him trying to convince himself... and every time he says “we” he really means “she”. But Trent TOTALLY gets it...
@@wbnethery3 bcuz simpppp
Those will be the most expensive eggs for yeeeears to come.
Very cool to see the other projects you two are working on! My wife has us getting ready for chickens too!
Hopefully, your $750 leads to many years of productive use. I built my wife a small greenhouse about 20 years ago and it is still in use today. She spends endless hours with her flowers and gardens and the benefit of having the greenhouse is huge.
Nice work by the way, be well!

Beware of "monitored" home security systems. I had a Brinks system, left on a business trip and my house was robbed. The cops do not rush out to your house just because you have a high dollar monitored security system, and thieves our fast - usually less than 5 mins. Then the cops told me that they new the gang that hitting homes in the area, but they were hard to pin down and it wasn't within their man power to chase after them. The cops flat out told me that these security systems are grate for scaring kids away, but organized thieves are almost never pursued and are rarely caught. Your best money is on a safe room and a commercial fireproof safe. Then insure the hell out of anything you can't lock down.
You are officially an "old married man."
Let's see; build a chicken coop for messy little birds or have the money to buy eggs for the next 10-years. Easy choice, "lets build a chicken coop."
We started with 4... now have 2 ducks 4 turkeys and 21 chickens.
Loved it bro!! Huge fan of you guys!!!
Oh, man! I just finished a chicken coop for my girlfriend - same as you, I was shocked at the amount of work! Good luck with it - I said that my part is done now; she’s the chicken rancher from here on out!
Awesome job! Be careful tho, a determined coyote or two CAN get through your wire panels unless the panel is very sturdy. If not they can dig under. I have seen it. Having a dog in the yard helps discourage predator issues. Sweet build tho. If my wife sees this vid I’ll be building one too....
You made a whole chicken coop from "scratch" 😂
From scratch to hatch
This was fun. Keep 'em coming.
you guys give me so much inspiration for my future.

I too had to build a chicken coop for my wife during quarantine. Thanks for sharing!
This was such a wholesome video haha. You are really useful to your wife, bless her
Bro... they get one damn chicken and before you know it you're running a semi-commercial chicken farming operation. Good luck dude hahahaha
This. We now have 21 chickens 2 ducks and 4 turkeys.... will probably end up with some Peafowl
Ryan Jones 🤣 yup. We started with 1 duck, it was supposed to be just like a funny thing. Now there’s 5 ducks, and like 50 chickens, two incubators, baby chicks in the guest bathroom with heat lamps..... kill me now 😝
Nathan Strange haven’t got into trying to hatch eggs yet. I’m sure that’s coming
indirectly chickens are some kind of "flying" as well ...
Sure it is. I used to buy chickens. Damn things flew south every winter. Cost me a fortune to buy new ones every year.

Welcome to being a chicken parent. We have been raising chickens for about 6 or so years now. Lot of work but nothing like fresh eggs for breakfast. Thanks for sharing yet another interesting Palmer adventure!
Trent has no wnigs but flys, chickens have wings and can't fly.
Chickens can fly if you toss them hard enough. :-O
The eggs need to be turned about every two hours while incubating.
Good job on the palace and making wifey happy!
Nice coop! My wife and I have raised chickens for years, nothing like fresh farm eggs, yum! Interesting, we just completed construction of a new coop for our chickens too! Like you, we went all out building our new coop, which we call the “Shrine”, or the “mansion”. Yeah, it’s a bit over done, but it looks nice and the maintenance is much easier than our other coop was. Congratulations, you are going to really enjoy having some chickens around. Good job!
When you leave home for an extended period, you will need someone to take care of the livestock. We use Ruth Ambrose, who has been doing this in our area for 20 years. She lives in Rancho Haven but has no problem coming down to your area. You have my contact information, so let me know if you want to get in touch with Ruth.
Cool that you all have someone there for you ! And that you have learned to cover each other.
"Happy wife, happy life." is a pretty messed up statement when you think about it. Are you saying you can't be happy unless your wife is happy? Or are you saying that if your wife isn't happy, she won't allow you to be happy? It's a pretty subservient statement and implicates that our wives have absolute power of the happiness in the family. I am divorced twice, though, so my logic may be flawed. LOL
I think he means if the people you love are happy, they will make you happy. Doesn't seem so messed up to me
I agree. You hear this statement very often and there is something about it, that rubs me the wrong way.
Good job you two. Be Safe.
Great build!!!! Love it...
First
Nice job Trent. Looks GOOD! A labor of love and selflessness!
I agree 100% with other's comments of a 2 foot perimeter of buried chicken wire. An ounce of prevention......
I made my chicken coop from scratch. Bought truck loads of wood and built it on an insulated and raised floor which we then painted with rubber so it doesn't rot out in months. 12 chickens, 8x12 coop and they get 8x6 of that and the rest is for stores. 8x12 run too. And then 1 died. And for the 11 that survived it is nowhere near enough. So they get let out into a few hundred square feet with a 48" high electric fence. You need to do something to prevent them, or predators, digging under the run. We have a hardware cloth apron inside and out. On the inside it is buried, on the outside it is on the surface. Having the mesh fastened from the inside makes it easier to push in. I wrapped rolls round the outside, then used long staples every few inches to secure it to the 2x4 uprights on 24" centers in the run. I have an automatic, light triggered, door too. So when they go inside at night the metal door closes behind them. Chickens go to bed early. They take a lot of feeding too. But the eggs are good. We average better than 9 per day from 11 chickens. Worst in the winter was still 5.
Yeeesssssss. Way to go Hailey starting a Chicken Ranch. Trent you rocked that coop. Well done. Love the variety your channel offers.
Great job, Trent. Best housing ever seen for chickens. May this work for you 2.

Yes, as with many situations like this, projects arise and spring into being. One of ours was replacing the window in my wife's office. Then the sheetrock on the interior wall. Then wainscotting and baseboard and chair rail. However, we get these projects done so we can go out and fly!!!
