Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I know how to speak
And I know where I’m going
I wanted to seek
But I got distracted
It’s a mirage
One that leaves me embarrassed
Cause no one knows me like you
You know there’s nothing left for ya
So I continually move
Try to pass through for ya, does that bore ya?
[Verse 2]
The pest about pain
It’s timeless and honest
So let go of your shame
It’s dead dampening blanket
It’s a façade
Go back and look at your training
There’s nobody else like you
I think I finally explained it
So I continue to move
Between the bank and the blanket, don’t fake it
[Chorus]
I, I’m really going to try this time
I’m gonna give you my heart in spite of my soul I, I’m really going to try this time
I’m gonna give you my heart in spite of my soul
[Verse 3]
I want your name, burnt in my ceiling Floats like a flame
An unpredictable wonder
You gave it all hope
That all of this is a circle
There’s nobody else like you
But so many that came before you
This is the moment I choose
Between the hope and the harness, so be honest
[Chorus]
I, I’m really going to try this time
I’m gonna give you my heart in spite of my soul I, I’m really going to try this time
I’m gonna give you my heart in spite of my soul

Leaving this comment here as a reminder. So that whenever someone likes it, I'll come back and listen to this masterpiece!!
It's time, Jemit
Time to jam my friend
Time to give it a listen again
I was the hundredth guy to like it. Time to listen to this piece of art
"...I knew what to seek but I got distracted..."
Whenever I feel low, stressed or sad, I come to this song and read the comments from people around the world. It's like knowing that we are not the only individuals who are suffering. Stay strong guys, one day at a time, it will all pass.

If you are hearing this for the first time, congratulations. You have found something that is truly special. proceed…..
My Dad sadly ended his life when I was 15. I'm 28 now. One of my good friends sent me this link a few days ago and it's the first time I cried to a song ever. I took a 3 hour drive starting at 11pm. I had to think. This band is honestly a life changing band. That was one of the most painful grieving moments I've ever had. Thank You
💝💝💝 A friend that shares music like this is a friend for life. 💝💝💝
please listen to I can feel a hot one too
Love this
My dad committed suicide too. So sad. This band is awesome
God bless you my friend. You will be together again one day...never lose that hope !
The sounds that come out of this mans beard are heavenly.
Very funny Jason! Thank you for making me laugh! You're right, that's a pretty thick beard!
lol!
Yes, truly the Chuck Norris of musicians :)
It's not actually coming out from his beard. It just appears so because of the lighting and the camera angles
I think Michael Stipe is living in his beard.
This band is what everyone is looking for. Some just haven't found them yet.
Johnathan Utahzio Preach 🙌 very well said

Wow you nailed exactly how this song makes me feel
This song is so hauntingly beautiful… all the emotions…

Isn’t it nice to be here together experiencing this song? I love you all.
When my anxiety starts to get overwhelming this is exactly the kind of song I need. Just laying down for a few minutes and listening to this really, really helps. Thank you.
I wish I’d found them before
Hang in there. Just breathe. Everything gets better.
Something so small takes me and breaks me! One bad thought from you ! My whole mood changes
Literally just dud the same. Ty for sharing my strange proclivities 😉😶

And I bet 1 person wrote this song, not 11 people with 5 producers and a team of assistants.
The lyrics for the song are different in the description. There seems to be two sets of lyrics for the song floating about.
"I Know How To Speak"

I discovered them about 4-5 months ago and absolutely love them. Both their amazing lyrics and wonderful sound. I’m 52. Some may think it old, my parents seemed ancient (to me; at ‘40 ‘). So make the most of your ‘gift’ of life, live life in the present moment (body and mind) and your future will take care of itself ❤️
well said 🥰 52 years young my brother 🤗
You are a youngster, I’m 56 but agree 100%. Wisdom is the only gift with age.
Really appreciate your words, I am 51 years old - this music is the very best I have ever heard, it’s powerful and harmonious, fierce yet peaceful.. It leaves a mark you can see and feel inside your soul.. 🕯🖤🫂❤️
Amen..I'm 54..Great sounds to help me stay grounded
57 this year. Looking backwards hurts, looking forward is a little scary, so I LIVE FOR TODAY. And EVERY day ABOVE GROUND, is a GREAT DAY !😎🇺🇸
I have been listening to these guys for about 2 years now. I still find myself drawn back to these songs, especially in times of stress, anxiety, or depression. There's some sort of reassuring feeling that I get from their music.
Exactly why I'm here now
2 years, same here. Found Silence first, during a rough time. Was Immediately immersed.
Came here looking for some peace. I wanna be here.

I get so overwhelmed by these guys' songs... but this one... in loop repeat nonstop... it's having a friend when no one else is there to listen to you. I don't stop feeling sad, but I stop feeling lonely... and for me at least, makes all the difference in the world. I can say I am better at handling my depression thanks to songs like this one.
Hi David, I just read your comment from a year ago, and want to tell you I hope you are continuing to cope with your depression and finding solace in music like this. Never stop trying, because you have great worth in this world.

a must listen :) :) :)
This song and "Where Have You Been" make me cry every time. Absolutely beautiful writing with emotion that floods through each chord, each verse, each word. ❤️
Rachel Watson both phenomenal songs. Andy is an emotional wrecking ball, between his voice and writing.
"Where have you been" acoustic is my favorite. I've watched every one of Andy's live versions of that song. There are some early versions of him in small venues where the audience is distracted inside conversation and all the while he seems to be spilling out his guys in front of them. Great stuff. I also love "cope" acoustic. I Iost some interest with this "black mile to the surface" album because of the dark spirited album art...but im making my way back to check in on his acoustic sets.
Amen 🙏❤️❤️❤️
I think he saved my marriage 🥺 I sent this to my husband… but he never listened. Justin’ furstenfeld, fin greenhull, Andy hull ❤️
Then you need to get medication.
I’m not always sure what road I am travelling, but this is surely the soundtrack playing in the background.

This song relaxes me as it punches me in the gut. Gratitude for this immortal gift.

💕 👏 BRAVO, as always! I’m going on 70, and the 1st time I heard MO’s beautiful music was ‘The Silence’. It was the meaningful lyrics, captivating voice, instrumental background that hit me hard in my heart and soul! Since then I’ve been searching for, and playing, just about everything else they’ve performed/recorded. It was just very recently that I found THIS, and imo it’s another 👍 ‘masterpiece’. IDK WHY they aren’t more popular and well known in the US 🇺🇸, or elsewhere, but they should be! Yet with the huge # of other contemporary artists that imo don’t come anywhere even close to having MO’s talent THEY are considered to be the ‘best ever’ by SO many, it’s sad, a real shame, and hard to believe they can’t relate to THIS group! Maybe it’s bc they don’t have a heart or soul…🤔, but it’s their own loss!
This song drives me. As an artist and a poet, it seems to give me a focus and balance that is unmatched… beautiful work.
As a fellow artist, I completely agree with your comment. This song is hypnotic in a way. It just puts me in the groove while I woodburn or paint.

I m glad I found them...songs like these are like a pain killer and erases the misery that we are facing...it's beautifully distracting from my present.
Discovered this song when I was going through dark ,lonely days. Every chord seemed to tear into my soul. Times are better but it still hits home.
I’m glad to hear that ur doing much better these days! My luck has definitely seemed to have changed for me too, my friend!
When music is really good, I get goosebumps and this song delivers.
I miss my 8 year old son, like a divorced father ... every time I look forward to the days and nights to hug him again and to when he grows up, to teach him listening such beautiful songs like this
I just found this song last night, and I am obsessed. I have listened to it no less than 150 times.

We have been listening to Manchester Orchestra for 13 years, and I swear, they never cease to amaze us. Everything they release is out of this world amazing. I've never heard a band that can continue to outdo themselves like these guys. This arrangement of this song is one of my favorite songs of all time. I fully consider Andy to be the defining voice of our generation. Full of heart, full of soul. I will never be able to tell you all how much I adore your music. I have a 5 year old daughter with Down syndrome who sings your songs daily, and my 2 year old is learning them quickly! It's a family affair, loving MO over here!!! You're amazing. I don't know how you'll ever be able to top everything you've released, but your musical and lyrical genius seems to be endless. Thank you for touching my heart and soul so many times.

Love how the camera circles, "all of this is a circle". Reminds me of (circular) arguments and hard times in relationships, and how in the end it comes down to a choice to just simply keep trying to make it work. Their songs are like tributes to the ghosts that circle us as we strive to stay together. They masterfully create deep internal strife and dialogue that accompanies trying to figure out life, and combining that with the hope/fear that ultimately decides what happens in one's life. It's a matter of choice of belief, about one's self, others, being open to having our stories open to interpretation, seeing two (or more sides) and struggling to find the truth in those shades of grey.
While all of their songs are related (seem to tell different parts of the same story), this song ("I know how to speak") seems most closely related to "The Silence", to me (like opposite sides of the same coin, and if I'm not mistaken both have something to do with the lead singer reflecting on having children, potentially struggling to understand how they approach his relationship with either his wife or future kids, or even himself. "The Silence" is a more visceral experience of the pain and anguish associated with creating space in a relationship due to hurts. "I know how to speak" is sort of the decision to re-engage and acknowledging it will not be perfect, but that you sincerely desire to try and hope to be accepted in your honesty of your "baggage" and likely ongoing personal struggles in a relationship.
Not sure if my interpretations are correct. Regardless, love you guys (Manchester Orchestra). It's helped me process own aspects of abuse in my past, and coming to acceptance with how that abuse has tainted my own attempts to form a family now and in the future.
this is a wonderful interpretation.... thank you for sharing it
Very insightful thoughts. Thank you for sharing.

Normally, a band will have that ONE song that just gets in your skin.. make you feel when you are dead.. but these guys,,, soooo many... so grateful to have found them.

They just play to my soul. Love this music! Lyrics and chords!
This is one of my favorite bands. The Silence is possibly one of my best songs as well. So much feeling. Wow!
Yep I’ll never forget being at the Great Scott in Boston in 2007. I was 18 and my friends brought me to their show. Bought their cd after being instantly hooked and been a big ol fan ever since. Been cool watching their music get better and better over the years.
I love this song, the melody is very moody, & always puts me in a good mood after work. These guys are really good
MO music leaves room for us to fit the meaning into our own lives. thats the way lyrics heal the masses. Thank you!

Andy Hull is the silky voice of my musical soul
One of the best songs ever I could listen to this a million times ❤
One of the best discovered bands I've made lately 👌 amazing sound
Same. Can't. Stop. It's all so beautiful
Andy Hull's voice has a quality that words can't quite fit. Between boy and man, angel and bare demon, whisper and thunder, it goes circling on, gently humming from -- as if there were heaven to -- earth.
Their acoustic version of the gold melts my soul . This is right up there
Such a relief bands like this still exist!! This is one of those songs everyone needs to hear at some point!
This song brings tears to my eyes. It's perfect.

Haha me too I'm the same age and hearing this band and there music is so uplifting. The words are so heartfelt and hits home amazing.
I absolutely love their sound. I've been depressed for a very long time, and if there is such a thing as the healing power of music Manchester Orchestra has that power.
youll get thru it! its a fight to be sure...but sounds like this definately help! keep on keepin on. in the end the strength you will gain is worth more than anything else this world has to offer and in of itself will give back just as much because of what you will then be able to give.
You’re so SO amazing .. and I’m so broken .. and I cannot stop listening to you ( don’t want to stop )
Emotion. What else can you say. Brings me to my knees every time
I'm just starting to know this band. I'm falling in love.
