My very Italian roommate was not thrilled that the only thing that would put his daughter to sleep was Irish dancing. Or that her favorite show to watch as a toddler was “the princesses” aka Celtic Women. 😂
Absolute masterpiece! The so-called geniuses who let go of Michael Flatley and separated him from the incomparable Bill Whelan did the world a huge disservice. Had they kept him and composer Whelan together by allowing them creative license, the owners would have gotten even richer and the world would have been truly inspired. As it turned out, Flatley left, created his own shows, and demonstrated to the world what a master choreographer he was - and is. We are still left with a blessing, however... a single show that demonstrates to all generations the power of unleashed creativity.
This is only version I will watch, this was truly Michael Flatley first stage of brilliance, I have all the shows he has produced, He is Lord of the Dance, he is Riverdance.
Whatching them sing "when will our people breathe?" Hits hard now knowing I watched this so young and didn't understand. And we are here and we still don't understand.
@Lee Toone For some reason, SOMEone just couldn’t allow there to be such a spectacular production that celebrates Irish culture only. Really makes you wonder…
I tried watching the new one, and it wasn't a BAD production, per se, they just tried too HARD. Like, in this original, you can see that the dancers are giving it their all, but they're not trying to overdo it. And Michael, Jean, the Trio, everyone dances their asses off, and the movements are so much more fluid. You know, like DANCING xD. The dancers, bless their hearts, looked so stiff and lifeless in the newer version. Like they were being FORCED to dance, and not doing it because they wanted to. Which is why I will forever hold the 1995 version very dear to my heart. Absolute masterpiece.
Note that Riverdance premiered before this, as an interval act at Eurovision 1994. You should watch the video of that, the reaction is incredible because nobody knew it was coming. They immediately decided to make it a whole show after that, but you should check out the Eurovision performance just for the audience reaction.
As a Mexican American in Los Angeles area I always get emotional watching any part of a river dance performance and especially with Michael flatly. In California us Mexicans knew more about Ireland than Mexico. Hah!
I cannot think _ever having seen music, and dance compliment one another with so much energy, joy, and heart stirring emotion evoked,_ as when I first saw this way back in the 90's.
This is the year of 2019. I saw this on video cassette back in 2000, as a 3 year old I was instantly in love with the dances, and coming from a family whose parents were former ballet dancers was an experience that many people in this world are not given at childhood. This made me cry at the age of 21, and my 22nd birthday is not too far off, and this nostalgia trip was more than I could take. 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️ I fucking love the 90s!
Michael Flatley flies! His feet are off the ground more than they are on it. Wow. I loved that they put a red-headed lass in the lead. I wonder how all their knees / ankles / feet are doing some 23 years later.
Not only did they put a red headed lass in the lead, they put the best female Irish dancer of all time in the lead. The chemistry between Michael Flatley and Jean Butler was absolutely electric. This original live version of the show hit every single mark, from cast, choreography, music, stage design, acoustics, everything. A show like this (the original live version) comes around maybe once in a lifetime if you are lucky.
They never stopped - they still tour every year - totally different dancers and cast in general, but still touring... Michael Flatley retired with tons of injuries - this is a tough dance...
This PIECE OF ART still gives me the same chills that had given me back in 1995, when a 9-year-old me saw it for the first time... I was AMAZED, and still am. Marvellous.
I can't dance and though cancer treatments to my throat robbed me of my hearing for 2 years . Some has come back and with excellent headphones I can get lost in this wonderful show of human talant bar none! I never tire of it.
Everyone can dance, friend, even if only in their souls. I have no doubt you put Mr. Flatley to shame for the survivor's spirit you have. You are an inspiration to us all. You just keep on dancing and be well, Allen. Meanwhile the rest of us will try in our own ways to keep up!
I saw the first show and instantly fell in love with it . I am an old country boy of 76 and it takes a lot to impress me . I have never forgotten this wonderful production .
This reminds me of my mum how we sadly lost in 1997 to cancer 😢 she absolutely loved this and I didn't really appreciate the beauty of riverdance as I was only young back then . I saw the animated raindeer film riverdance at Christmas time and it had me in tears as all the music from it brought back fond memories of her ❤
I'm an italian girl who fell in love with Ireland and it's amazing culture after I had an experience with my group in Dublin...it was the last day of the first week, and the teacher asked us students if we wanted to go to the city centre to watch a Riverdance performance...we agreed and we went to see the show at the theatre....I WAS AMAZED. Really...the music was wonderful and their dance moves were captivating...I had an amazing experience in Ireland. I wish to discover more about Ireland's beautiful culture :) Ps. Sorry if my english is bad, but it's not my native language 😅
Italy is "equally", an amazing country with such incredible scenery & culture too!! The Roman Empire's legacy, WOW!!! Simply amazing & the food, so, so delicious! Long live Ireland & Italy! Take care & Peace
I’m sure many other people that used to watch this as a kid are adults now but I’m still only sixteen, stressing about becoming an adult. I used to watch this movie on VHS with my great grandparents. I watched it every single weekend with them for forever and then I lost it, I haven’t been able to find it for forever but I told my dad about it and sure enough he found it, I’m so happy cause I have so many nostalgic memories that are just out of reach in my mind I can’t clearly remember them, so I’m hoping this brings back so sweet memories I forgot. After 2020 and the pandemic, 2021 with a bunch of traumatic personal events that happened back to back with no time to breathe in between, and 2022 with the threat of WW3 basically, this has provided a moment of calm for me. And I hope it does that for other people too. 💜
I immediately awaken, light up like a wee kid, find myself smiling widely & also carrying bittersweet memories, whenever i watch this formidable production! It's bittersweet, because on one hand, i'm so happy to be watching it & reliving it all over again & then on the other hand, i feel somewhat sad that's it's all over, bec it will never happen, quite like this again & it's now a distant memory, albeit, the fact that it's still "alive" via this platform. All in all, a wonderful time in musical history & all i can say is.......Long live Riverdance!!!! And, Irish music & culture!!!
I have my elementary music teacher to thank for introducing me to Riverdance. She'd put this on a few times a year for us, and while the other kids got bored and talked through it, I was always front row & glued to the screen. I would borrow the VHS from our local library back to back, and it was my favorite choice for sick days. I will never be sick of this; it's timeless.
SAME! When I was middle school my music teacher had her class pick out a vhs (or DVD if you had one) of a primarily music oriented video. We would pick from a bowl of names who's to watch that week and analyze them. I was the first one to get picked and I brought this vhs - I don't remember a time when there was NOT talking during this. Kids payed attention to 8 mile or rocky horror picture show, but this never a care in the world - yet my teacher at the end of the year praised me for bringing somthing NOT the norm lol. Part of me REALLY wishes I could watch this live when Flatley was preforming - but I guess this is as close as I can get to it
I just love Riverdance !!!!!! Hey you all! I have tickets to see them, for the first time, live in Dublin this next August!!!!!! And I'm coming all the way from Santiago, Chile !!!!!! Am I lucky or what !!!!!
Absolutely. All true art is pure magic, but none more refined than that which takes all of one's mind, heart, body and soul like this. If it doesn't evoke emotion in the viewer, they have no soul, and thus, no business in that audience.
My parents used to watch this for fun and me and my sisters loved it so they let us join them late at night. We’d try to dance too, and I think this is what gave me my love for the sound of heels. As a child this performance was enchanting.
My mom had this on vhs and I was so obsessed with this as a kid, I'd watch it all the time. It had inspired me to take tap lessons, unfortunately I was embarrassed because I was largest girl in class so I had quit. Wish I had continued with it..
Did you notice that Jean Butler is as tall as Michael Flatley, and many of the other men in the show? I guess being a tall woman is an advantage in Riverdance, as long as you can dance as well as Jean.
I am! Here it is July 2,2018! I've been watching all these CZcams renditions today. I'm so glad so many have surfaced for our listening and watching. I can't get enough of listening and watching Michael Flatley, anything he does or arranges. His dancing is brilliant, simply brilliant. His dancing and musical arrangements he orchestrates are breathtaking. May our Lord heal all his physical medical issues. Information on him and his incredible career is available by Googling his name. In May 2015, Flatley revealed that much of his vertebral column was irreparably damaged and that he had a damaged left knee, a torn right calf/triceps surae muscle, two ruptured Achilles tendons, a fractured rib, and a recurring broken bone in his foot. In November 2015, Flatley's show Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games premiered at the Lyric Theatre, a Broadway theater. Due to his injuries, Flatley was only able to perform in the final two numbers of the performance. After shows in New York, Flatley went on a final tour in the United States. Flatley's last show was in Las Vegas on St. Patrick's Day 2016. Trump inauguration In January 2017, Flatley introduced his troupe for a performance at the inauguration of Donald Trump. While the decision was controversial, Flatley called it "a great honour".
I’m watching this in 2022, yes, a masterpiece. I love love love the Spanish dancer in Firebird, omg, how I wish I could dance like that…..maybe in another life….🇳🇿🇳🇿
wow... i still remember when this premiered on PBS tv when I was 10yrs old. Sitting on my mum's living room floor watching this and being just in awe of the talent these people have. Riverdance inspired me to study dance when I became 17. And I even got to performed on stage. I wish I had kept up on it. Watching this brings back so many memories... this kind of music never gets old. I can listen to it all day. I cannot watch it without my feet moving to the beat of the drums. I'm on that stage with them every time.... :) really gets my Irish blood pumping! thx for posting this
@Jens Nobel I'm part Irish, Scottish and pretty much everything across Europe & i hear you. I agree. I really loved all of the performances and it was akin to a global spectacle. The Irish producers invited musical talents from all over the world (which was super awesome) and we wouldn't have expected any less from the Irish, who organised this very special event. I really loved and appreciated them all & was so very Wowed, by the Spanish Dancer (so beautiful), the Russian dancers (amazing) & by the gorgeous looking & voiced African-American Choir & hard shoe dancers. There is definite talent all across the world. Just in ref to the African peoples, the many African tribes are brilliant natural movers and dancers. I witnessed this when i visited Africa. I think the African people are an underrated super talent. I love sharing this with people whenever i am able. We tend to place the spotlight upon our own (which is natural/fine), however, we live in a big wide world, with other human ethnic groups abound, hence a large percentage, of other amazing human talents abound. Peace

From the first time that I saw this show on PBS I was hocked. I even joined an IRC (internet relay chat) which was one of the original ways to chat on the internet and would talk to other like minded Riverdance chatter. I was invited by one of my chat friends in 1996 or 1997to come visit them in Boston Mass. to go see the Show live there. I went with another friend from the chat room to see it and completely impressed and still to this day love this show. I went to Tulsa, OK to watch it again. Still impressed. In 1997 I went and stayed with another chat friend in San Antonio and saw Lord of The Dance with Michael Flatley. I enjoyed that very much too. I went to several other live shows and loved them all both Riverdance and LOTD. As you can see, I WAS A FANATIC. Will never tire if watching this.

I'm of Irish descent; my father was an Irishman, and I saw this show live. Watching it always fills me with pride and makes me cry.
God how I miss my mother in-law, who loved this show, and bought me the video, that we play several times a year to honor her memory. 👍👍& 10⭐
Whatching them sing "when will our people breathe?" Hits hard now knowing I watched this so young and didn't understand. And we are here and we still don't understand.
I do understand
The original AND BEST version of this show.
Oh absolutely!! :-)
Bingo
Hah!
I watched this on repeat as a child w my VHS tape. It was my dream to become a riverdancer
Oh man, I remember when this is all PBS played for an entire year.
Love you
Jennifer when I was little, I would get up and pretend to dance to it.
Iman Amin same. Well I am actually self-taught
Happy st Patrick’s day!!🇮🇪🇮🇪 from all us here in Ireland
Still the best version of RIverdance ever.
I cannot think _ever having seen music, and dance compliment one another with so much energy, joy, and heart stirring emotion evoked,_ as when I first saw this way back in the 90's.
Dangerous World Tour (October 1, 1992) is another candidate
This is the year of 2019. I saw this on video cassette back in 2000, as a 3 year old I was instantly in love with the dances, and coming from a family whose parents were former ballet dancers was an experience that many people in this world are not given at childhood. This made me cry at the age of 21, and my 22nd birthday is not too far off, and this nostalgia trip was more than I could take. 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
I fucking love the 90s!
Michael Flatley flies! His feet are off the ground more than they are on it. Wow. I loved that they put a red-headed lass in the lead. I wonder how all their knees / ankles / feet are doing some 23 years later.
Answer in his bio available on Google or my comment listed above. May our Lord heal him!
the lead then was Jean Buttler, i think they swap out the leads but im not sure...
Both of my sisters who competitively Irish Dance themselves, used to watch this religiously back in the day
25 years later and this is STILL AWESOME !
I say, bring back Riverdance! An encore! Anyone with me here?!
ONLY if it's with Michael Flatley!!!! NOT his understudy. But sadly.... He's retired now
Only with Jean Butler
It's still going strong.
They never stopped - they still tour every year - totally different dancers and cast in general, but still touring... Michael Flatley retired with tons of injuries - this is a tough dance...
No
Jean Butler is fantastic. What a great pity she left Riverdance !
She's about 50
My grandfather gave me the vhs of this back when I was six years old. I absolutely loved it. Every time I see it, I think of him.
This PIECE OF ART still gives me the same chills that had given me back in 1995, when a 9-year-old me saw it for the first time... I was AMAZED, and still am. Marvellous.
I wish I knew how to spell AMEN in Gaelic. 🙂
Hard to believe it's been 25 years. So much talent and energy and such an amazing show. Love it!!!
I can't dance and though cancer treatments to my throat robbed me of my hearing for 2 years . Some has come back and with excellent headphones I can get lost in this wonderful show of human talant bar none! I never tire of it.
Live long and prosper!! From Richmond VA 🙂🙂
You'll be fine.
I wish to discover more about Ireland's beautiful culture :)
Ps. Sorry if my english is bad, but it's not my native language 😅
Your English is very good! No need to apologize! Wish my Italian was as good!.
@@janetritchie7499 Thank you so much! I'm glad to know this. I'm sure your italian is good, remember that practice is the key! ;)
Italy is "equally", an amazing country with such incredible scenery & culture too!! The Roman Empire's legacy, WOW!!! Simply amazing & the food, so, so delicious! Long live Ireland & Italy! Take care & Peace
2019 anyone? I remember watching this on PBS. Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Yes, watching it on St. Paddy's Day, 2019. Wow!! Can't believe it was so many years ago I first saw it.
AMAZING !
I still have the VHS tape! Had to find a new copy because our 1995 version has been worn down from so many viewings.
superb after all these years
Most definately, on a regular basis. Went to the show shortly afterwards and it gave an absolute fresh/new impulse. Love it
Abs brilliant!! No wonder it hit the world by storm when it 1st came out. Its As good today in 23 as it was when i saw it back then .
I can never get tired of seeing or listening to Riverdance.
I used to watch this VHS on repeat when I was 5. 23 years later it still gives me chills.
We thank all of you for some of the most beautiful dancing ever presented.
Same type thing for me. We come here and find something beautiful, meaningful and uplifting.
It all started as a "Fill In." in the Eurovision song contest .... Amazing I remember saying at the time "THIS IS BIG."
No day is complete without watching "Reel around the sun."
Part of me REALLY wishes I could watch this live when Flatley was preforming - but I guess this is as close as I can get to it
My science teacher let us watch this in class today
I wish I knew how to spell AMEN in Gaelic. 🙂
I just love Riverdance !!!!!! Hey you all! I have tickets to see them, for the first time, live in Dublin this next August!!!!!! And I'm coming all the way from Santiago, Chile !!!!!! Am I lucky or what !!!!!
This makes me proud of my Irish roots
Who could ever watch this and not feel something inside - in lack of a better word, I think Joy would describe it.
Absolutely. All true art is pure magic, but none more refined than that which takes all of one's mind, heart, body and soul like this. If it doesn't evoke emotion in the viewer, they have no soul, and thus, no business in that audience.
Had to come back for a 3rd visit. I get the usual chills watching this beautiful dance.
My parents used to watch this for fun and me and my sisters loved it so they let us join them late at night. We’d try to dance too, and I think this is what gave me my love for the sound of heels. As a child this performance was enchanting.

Thank you..

Watched this when I was growing up. It made me want to be a dancer from the age of 3! Such talent!
@@janetritchie7499 I meant large in size not height.. 😣
owned it on vhs all my life! i watched it growing up and it still lives in my head rent free, going on 26 years now!
Trump inauguration
In January 2017, Flatley introduced his troupe for a performance at the inauguration of Donald Trump. While the decision was controversial, Flatley called it "a great honour".
Simply Amazing. I remember watching this as a teenager in 1995. Wow Michael and his dance crew are amazing.
Peace
How beautiful. How evocative. How spiritual! YES, people are watching this, even if they only stumble acros it.
Here in 2020. I actually saw this performance live in Madrid 25 hears ago. What a delight to discover it again here on CZcams:
When Michael flattery comes out at the beginning it always gives me goosebumps. The girls leggins are a blur. Beautiful songs and the pipes make me weep. Love the whole priduction just as much as ever.
His name is Flatley. You can see it at 2:12 into the video.
Michael Flatley was my childhood crush. Slainte to all my fellow Irishmen past, present, future, and forever!
Never get tired of watching this. The dancing, the music, the story, the staging, everything works.
Dead right David! A brilliant show!! It was a great success too, both here in Ireland & globally.
I have this version as well as the show in New York City on VHS and the show in Geneva on DVD.
I also have a VHS copy of the show in Dublin
its wetting my appetite for next month! :)
@@celtic611 Hello my friend, oh @ The Point Theatre in Dublin. I've been many times & a great location. That, was indeed a great show, as they all were really. I was lucky enough, to see the show again, whilst travelling around Australia. I saw Riverdance, live, @ Rod Laver Arena & gosh, it was simply brilliant!! Australia's show, was insanely awesome & carried a truly fun & electric atmosphere! Great memories, of a great show, within a great country. I so love my home....Ireland, but i so long to revisit the land of OZ, "Down Under". Take care & Peace
The uilleann pipes bring tears to my eyes every time I hear this rendition. My wife and I were fortunate enough to see this show at the Congress in Chicago about 20 years ago. This performance took me back......Thanks guys!
Wow! what a beautiful & elegant flamenco dance @ 24min !!
Love it.
