The song was originally written in 1979, this version is a rerecording from 1986, they also did the video in 1986. You can hear the difference especially in the bridge ('Misjudged your limits...') where they doubled his voice which wasn't in the original version plus his voice sounded a bit more squeaky in '79. This is the '79 version:

The Cure is my 5th favorite band ever. "Boys Don't Cry" was originally released in 1979. If you guys want the true Cure experience, you should react in chronological order. They've been through many stages. Early on, they were post punk. They veered gothic, but soon crept up on very pop sensibilities. Ultimately, they are a new wave/alternative band with lots of versions to offer. React to each song on their early greatest hits compilation, "Standing on a Beach." It covers the late 70s into the mid-late 80s. I think "Boys Don't Cry" is the 3rd song on it. You guys do those 10-12 songs, and you'll be versed in The Cure's journey BEFORE hitting it big in America with "Just Like Heaven." ❤

The Cure is my all-time favorite band. I even have a tattoo of Robert Smith’s silhouette from the Boys Don’t Cry album cover. They helped a shy, awkward teenager to not feel so alone, providing a sort of companionship through their music, which is deeply layered in sound and meaning. Thank you for choosing this song and I look forward to more. “In Between Days”, “Close to Me” and “Why Can’t I Be You?” are just a few of many songs that further showcase their genius.

I love that you got late 90s from this. As others have said, it was 1979. I've seen them live twice (in 1992 and again in 2023), and they closed out the show with this one both times. It is a very colorful career they have and this is another example of their signature soundscape from the Godfathers of Goth. I hope you get to react to The Cure's Love Cats video if you want something completely different from the early 80s that shows their humor and showmanship. Instead of the stage show versions all over CZcams, go find their actual official Love Cats video that's a mixture of spooky, smart, silly, and fun. It has upbeat Vaudeville Tin Pan Alley type humor with a spooky Goth vibe. The Love Cats video shows them in their earlier younger days with shorter hair and gives off a similar vibe as the Lullaby video about spiders except it's funnier and more upbeat but within that same Cure genre of Goth.

Did anybody see Boomtown Rats in the Southampton Gaumont in 78 or maybe 79?
For the life of me I can't remember the name of the support band but I want to say it was the Cure or Depeche Mode - but the amazing thing was the singer sung with his back to the audience for their whole set - and I remember thinking "they'll never amount to much" but then they went on to great success.

Yeah this is really early Cure, 1979...what i love most about them is their duality...they have fun & catchy poppy songs, but they also have dark goth even violent songs & albums like Pornography & Disintegration & dark yet melodic songs like Charlotte Sometimes...the Cure own their own rabbit hole...

❤This is from 1979 and is timeless. The Cure influenced so many bands. They did a very cool cover of The Beatles Hello, Goodbye. It is on the Art Of McCartney 2014 album that has top tier bands covering McCartney songs. Billy Joel covers Maybe I'm Amazed 🔥🔥🔥

This song was originally done in 1979 (as part of their US debut album, also called "Boys Don't Cry"; the slightly different UK Version is called "Three Imaginary Boys")- this re-vamped version was done in 1986 to coincide with the band's singles and video compilations that were released that year.

This was actually '79 but it does sound a lot more modern than 1979 but..... If you listen to the way the melody is composed it does sound older than late 90s, it sounds more mid 80s but it's one of those songs that is very hard to pin down to a certain era which is why it never seems to date.

Two of my favorite Cure songs are Charlotte Sometimes and A Forest, but you really can't go wrong with any of it. Whenever I think of the Cure I also think ofthe Smiths due to the rivalry between the two lead singers. I think they deserve another listen by you two. A few of my favorites are This Night Has Opened My Eyes, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, and Half a Person.

Crazy that your guess was 20 years out, it transports me back into the late late 70's/80's indie/goth scene which was just amazing in the UK, such a great time, it's weird as I would never call myself a Cure fan, but at the time I owned all their albums, they were just essential listening, I was listening to 'The Wedding Present' earlier, have you reacted to them? They were an awesome 80's Indie band.
