- Welcome to the video!
This is a DIY project making miniature fabric Yo-Yo rosette pieces for decoration on quilt blankets or pillows. My inspiration is from the 1920-1940 era with many fabric designs & color for the quilts.
The video shows two ways to make the circle-shaped fabric Yo-Yo pieces that are hand sewn. A rectangular ribbon method and a circle pouch method are shown in the video.
A 5/8” fabric circle is used to make the 5/16” Yo-Yo rosette. The pillow could have nine or more pieces depending on the size, sixteen rosettes are used in video. And the quilt blankets could have more than five hundred, also depending on the bed size, two hundred and twenty-one rosettes (5 3/4 x 4 1/2” quilt top) are used in video to cover a 1:12 scale twin (6 1/2 x 3 1/4”) bed. The time to make each piece from shape tracing, cutting, glue hemming (with dry time), sewing, pulling to pouch, flattening, knot tying, touch-up shaping & glue to secure thread is ten to fifteen minutes for me.
The steps can be modified to make larger or smaller sizes. This one is compatible for the 1:12 scale. I tried to make smaller rosettes by cutting tiny fabric circles then lightly saturated in a water glue mixture and shaped with small end of ball stylus instead of sewing.
Materials & suggested items for project:
[1] fabric - thin, cotton, cotton blends or other materials for Yo-Yo main pieces
[2] sewing needle, small
[3] thread - white or a color to coordinate with fabric
[4] glue - PVA clear dry, like Aleen’s original tacky glue or others & water
[5] sewing supplies for machine or by hand, like needles & threads, pins
[6] circle radius template, compass or circle shape form
[7] ruler & pencil & paper
[8] scissors
[9] tweezers
[10] toothpicks
[11] container to hold glue
[12] stylus & foam mat
[13] clamps, small

Oh my goodness I haven't seen that type of quilt since I was a small girl. So tiny and painstaking, but just beautiful!
Fabulous!!!
Thank you for your brillant instruction
Thanks Catherine! I have a vintage dollhouse yo-yo quilt. I had considered making one of my own and your tutorial gives me the impetus to take on this challenge. I especially needed the finishing instructions. So thank you again for your time and talents!
Great tutorial! Thank you so very much for sharing!
Catherine the quilt and pillow are beautiful, love them, something I’m going to make for my doll house, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧
Love these! I made one but it won't drape over the sides of the bed they way I would like. Your way of joining the yoyos is brilliant! Makes it drape naturally. Super job! Great tutorial!
This looks fantastic, I don’t know how you have the patience, you make it look so easy but I know it’s not ❤ I make tiny hexagon quilts and know how fiddly yet addictive it can be. I’m going to give the yoyo’s a try, thank you for the inspiration. Easter love from Nottingham, England xxx
That is beautiful. Hope a special someone get to sleep in the bed 🪆
I love this! Your instructions are so detailed - thank you. x I am going to tackle the quilt for my textile art room in my doll house. Probable for the wall. Thanks again-wonderful.
