    LYRICS
    [Presenter]
"Attention, attention here is Berlin Königs Wusterhausen and the German shortwave transmitter. We're broadcasting dance music..."
    [Verse 1]
We weren't allowed to be part of it.
Nothing to see, talk or hear
But every night for an hour or two.
    I've vanished from this world
    A little happy every night
My ear very close to the world receiver
    [Refrain]
    Radio, my radio
I let myself be sucked into the ether
    My ears become eyes
    Radio, my radio
    That's how I hear what I don't see
    Silence secretly faraway woe
    [Verse 2]
We weren't allowed to be part of it.
Nothing to see, talk or disturb
    Every song was forbidden
    So dangerous foreign notes
But every night a little happy
My ear very close to the world receiver
    [Refrain]
    Radio, my radio
I let myself be sucked into the ether
    My ears become eyes
    Radio, my radio (my radio)
    That's how I hear what I don't see
    Silence secretly faraway woe
    [Bridge]
    Every night I secretly rose
    On the back of music
Put your ears on your wings
    Sing softly into one's hands
    Every night and fly again
I just walked away with the music
    Float so through bright rooms
    No borders, no fences.
    [Interlude]
    Radio, radio
    Radio, radio
    [Refrain]
    Radio, my radio (my radio)
I let myself be sucked into the ether
    My ears become eyes
    Radio, my radio (my radio)
    That's how I hear what I don't see
    Silence secretly faraway woe

I'm East German and I was born in 1969. Well, not much younger than the guys from Rammstein. At that time I was also on the move in the GDR punk scene. I also listened to Feeling B. It was an East German punk band that included Flake and Paul von Rammstein. For many GDR citizens, radio was the only way to get western music. You sat in front of the radio for hours and then recorded your favorite music on the cassette recorder. I listened to the West Berlin radio station RIAS 2 (Radio Im Amerikan Sector) a lot. There was a radio show there that ran every Saturday and Sunday and played the songs to the end without interrupting because they knew that we were on the other side of the border with our recorders. For us, the western world was light years away and also the opportunity to see the bands and musicians in concert. In September 1989 my friends and I also took to the streets to demonstrate against the GDR regime. They came with clubs and dogs and beat us apart. Many were arrested. But in the end the GDR system was brought to its knees. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, and on November 10, I was standing on the Wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

A bit of interesting notes about "Radio". The keyboard play is inspired by "Radioactivity" by Kraftwerk (a band that they often listen to during their childhood and that inspired them to music). The Radiomast we see in the video sending signals is the logo of "Sender Freies Berlin" (Radio Free Berlin) a public radio from 1954.

Hello from Germany. I enjoy your reactions on my favourite band a lot. Always heartfelt and and pure. This song comes along all jolly and hard at the same time with beautiful lyrics about a serious and dreadful era in German history. It's just fun to listen to. A much harder musical version of that time you'll find in "Stein um Stein". I love that you read the lyrics beforehand, so you have an idea, what the song is about. Now in "Stein um Stein" the lyrics will reveal a different topic at first glance. But if you pay close attention it's actually about how it must have felt (at least to the band, don't wanna generalize) to live behind the wall. There's no official video to "Stein um Stein", but an awesome live performance of the "Völkerball-tour". Definitely worth checking in out. With love from Germany 🤘 😎

Rammstein are a genious. Your videos are unbeatable. They are short movies. Everything is excellent: scripts, makeup, clothes, interpretation, decorations... Rammstein thanks for your art!!! You are my favorite band. You are getting better. The mythical song "Forever young" from the also German group of the 80s: Alphaville seems written for you. And thanks to Pandora for your reactions. You don't interrupt the song and you react with your face in a natural and spontaneous way. A hug from Spain. Thank you.

  • @fionadowdeswell-simmons4968

Joern Heitman has created some wonderful videos with Rammstein and Radio is a fine example of their collaboration. They've taken a horrific situation, and one the band found themselves growing up in, and made a statement about it. I like the way that each band member wears a different outfit, tailored to reflect their individual personalities. The expressions on Schneider's face as he plays drums are priceless-he's confined behind his drum kit so he makes the most of what he's got, an expressive face. Radio is a lovely nod to Kraftwerk and Killing Joke during the 80s which is, of course, when the Berlin Wall came down. It's difficult to understand just how restricted their freedoms were in East Germany and it makes me appreciate how free I was by comparison especially as I'm in the same age group as the band. the use of holograms is genius-you can't destroy Rammstein, we're already out there, free as birds for any and all to listen to. Loved your reaction.

Funfact. The keyboard player's name is Flake. That is his stage name. Named after a Viking village from a comic TV series from the 70 Iger years called Wickie. Flake is almost deaf in the right ear and for this reason has bought a very old Mercedes stretch limousine, which has its steering wheel on the right side. So it is possible for him to understand his wife when she talks to him while driving, because she sits on his left and his left ear works perfectly.

"stille heimlich fernes Weh" is badly translated. Fernweh is the german opposite of homesickness its the painful urge to see and visit far away places /to be free. Fern means far, weh means woe/ ache or suffering. Stillen means to satisfy a need / relieve pain but is also a worldplay... "Stillen" is also breastfeeding a baby (that's why you see a woman breastfeeding a radio).
Still is not limited to sound.
It basically means something is not moving/in action or silent also blood, waters or emotional feelings, and the verb stillen means to "make it stop" (Blutung stillen = stop the bleeding)
As English originates in ancient German, you also have this word like in:
Still waters, "Stand still!" and so on.
Stille (noun) also means Silence but not in this sentence ... it's google translated poorly.
It means: "I secretly relieve my farsickness"

    Hi!
Till's makeup is from the cabarets of the Berlin of the roaring 20's. If you know the movie "Cabaret" then you know where his makeup is coming from (especially in the scene with the song "Welcome").
The roaring 20's had the reputation to be especially kinky and decadent with a lot of orgies, crossdressers and homosexual activities. Especially in Berlin.
The rest is a mixture of Third Reich and GDR (DDR), because both dictatorships restricted the receiving of radio waves from foreign countries with foreign ideas and foreign music.
If you were caught listening to foreign (enemy) radio stations in the Third Reich this could be your end. In the DDR you were thrown in prison and / or your life was ruined by the secret service (Stasi).
In both states the radio was the life line of the people for listening to modern western music that was forbidden in both dictatorships.
Despite of those threats the most people in the GDR watched west-TV and listened to west-radio. There was an area in the east, where no western TV and radio waves were getting to. That area was called "Tal der Ahnungslosen" (valley of the clueless) by the east Germans.
The women protesting and going over the top with bare breasts and the women turning over the car were part of the women's rights movements. Then they had written on posters and their body in the 1960's & 1970's the slogan "My body belongs to me" (part of the pro abortion movement inside the womens rights movement of the 1960's and 70's).
In the video they had written on posters and bodies "My Radio belongs to me".
In the same women's rights direction goes the scene with the complaining man (about the food) and the woman throws him to the ground.
But to be honest: I don't know, why they brought up that women's rights stuff in the context with their song about the radio. Maybe the radio helped spreading those political ideas back then, too.
The music was in big parts a homage to the sound of the band "Kraftwerk" and their songs about radio waves and the radio itself (partly integrated into songs like "Autobahn").
    My recommendation:
The band "Kraftwerk" and their song "Autobahn". If possible, take one of the latest versions. If possible from one of their latest life events with the 3D animation of the German highway in the background.
    Greetings
    Mega 👋😇👋
    PS:
"fernes Weh" means literally translated "distant pain", right. But in this case it is an unusual, artistic version of the German word "Fernweh" (Wanderlust, travel nerves, travel bug, to have itchy feet).
All those English expressions and words for Fernweh (even the imported German word Wanderlust) aren't catching the real meaning of "Fernweh". It isn't just the wish to travel somewhere. It's like a sweet (at the same time wistful) yearning and thinking about distant places.

they grew up in eastern germany - it was forbidden to listen to "decadent west music" so they listened it the forbidden way. First singer that went to DDR was Udo Lindenberg who gave the "Chief" Erich Honecker an electric guitar for present :-D :-D :-D I think that´s the sense of this song - but you got the sense before of course you think about it before you react. The final scene where they switch from black and white to color has an interesting twist. The EU flags, which are actually blue, are red. I suspect that Rammstein is criticizing the incipient interference of the EU in the private sphere of the people.

Sometimes the translations are very bad. The line
    _Stille heimlich fernes Weh_
    should not be translated in
    _Silence secretly faraway woe_
_Stille_ isn't here the noun silence but the verb _stillen_ which means to satisfy or to nurse (thats why you see a woman nursing the radio)
fernes Weh comes from _Fernweh_ which is the opposite of _homesickness_
Therefore the translation is more or less:
_(I am) Secretly satisfying my desire to be far away_

I love your reactions and I think it's good that you read the lyric beforehand. So you know what the song is about. Check the official video "keine Lust" there is also an English translation...... "Donaukinder" is also available with an English translation and that's a great song too....here are the links: youtu. be/-vBkKHdDffA czcams.com/video/qF8WFUE9mps/video.html

the message is to be found in that video you reactet before about Rammstein. The great prison DDR (german democraty republic). Nuditiy was cult (FKK = Freikörperkultur) the people were laying on the beaches .... naked. It was not forbidden - but it was been forbidden to listen to that "imperial, decadent western music! That´s the message.

The translation of the lyrics you use is not very good in my opinion. I think that this Translation comes closer to the original.
We were not allowed to belong
    - not to see, talk or hear
But every night for an hour or two
    I dissapeared from this world
A little bit glad every night
My ear very close to the World receiver
    [Refrain]
    Radio, my radio
I let myself be sucked into the Ether
    My ears become my eyes
    Radio, my radio
Thats how I hear what I can’t see
    Assuage my wanderlust in secrecy
We were not allowed to belong
    - not to see, talk or disturb
This kind of songs were forbidden
    So dangerous foreign-sounding notes
But a little bit glad every night
My ear very close to the World receiver
    [Refrain]
Every night I secretly mount upon
    - the back of music
Putting your ears on the wings
    Quietly singing into the hands
    Every night
And again i fly away with the music
Floating this way through all spaces
    No borders no fences
    Radio, Radio
    Radio, Radio
    [Refrain]
