That's because Leno was terrible. Propped up mainstream garbage. Read jokes line for line, sat in his stupid chair and then went home. Simple and safe for the 70+ crowd.
@@Novastar6 bruh, jay leno in his interviews with letterman throughout the 80’s was probably the funniest guy I’ve ever seen. A brilliant comedic mind, truly.
It was a blast from the past to see the VIDEO CALIBRATION message come up a couple of times during this video. I'd forgotten how my JVC VCR used to do that whenever it showed cassettes where the tapes had started to stretch and distort the signal. Good times.

+corymartin100 Howard was so full of shit here. Saying he didn't like what Johnny did to Joan Rivers because she didn't ask for permission to get her TV show is exactly what Howard did to Stuttering John when he took the Leno job without asking Howard about it first. Stern threw a bitch fit and basically has never talked to Stuttering John since.
The man made mental illness brought upon by neglect and an overbearing mother work very well for him. He is a huge narcisist. BUT....i love howard too, and would watch/listen to anything he does. He's genuinely funny, and really care about doing his damn job wich is being entertaining. One of the few famous people that really deserve the fame. Natural talent and a ton of work, like a fuck ton of work that guy did. Respect.

David letterman rocks. Thanks for amazing questions and playing your part in enabling Howard to come up with his brilliant dialogues. We need two to tango
Letterman was brilliant in setting up his guests. He provided the perfect foil for nearly every guest. He was rarely off. No late-night host did this as well.
Talked to one of Larry's staff people who was screening calls and they asked me what's my question... I told them I wanna talk about the first Gulf War that was just starting back then, and they said to me " We know who you are, you're with Howard Stern and hung up on me".. He did his show from NYC and became #1 in Los Angeles! He was incredibly funny, but he still owes me a $29.99 refund for his New Years Eve show. FJackie
I laughed so hard when he used to make fun of Ellen. I specifically remember him being so disgusted by how lame it was/is when she would dance. He was like "what IS that? Like she invented DANCING!?" Because that was like her " thing" when her show started. And he had a good point, like what a dumb waste of 2min watching her dance every episode. Just dancing like an idiot, making dumb faces like the audience are a bunch of autistic 3 year old chimpanzees.

This look is how I think of Howard stern. I listened to him every morning on the school bus. He rocked. I miss his WOR tv show. That was a rip. Howard stern hates jay Leno and it's hilarious.
I love how howards first appearance on this show was the only time Letterman introduced him without a look afterwards that said, this pompous ass just won't go away!
wow, I was too young in 1992 to watch this but then again I don't think he was famous in Canada at that time. I was in primary school at the time. I remember listening to him when I began high school just after his movie came back and absolutely loved it!!
0:02 "do we have time to bring out our first guest?".... I've watched a lot of letterman clips lately, it's like a nervous tick to say, "do we have time". Uhhhh, ya dave.. it's your first guest. I think you have time to bring him out.
Something people may not know about this broadcast. Sharon Stone was on after Howard. Now at this point in Howard's career it had been agreed upon that when he did appear on Letterman, he would be the first guest or he wouldn't do the show. There's no way Dave had any problem whatsoever with that. Afterwards, I don't recall if on the air or in some magazine, Sharon Stone actually complained that she was supposed to be on first, which was a total lie. Apparently she didn't like some of the things Howard had said about her. That started sort of a feud between the two. At least two times when Stuttering John attempted to ask Sharon Stone questions, her bodyguards roughed him up. And man did Howard go off on her on the air.
This version of Howard is what we all loved.
@Trevor Nehemiah ???
we all miss this Howard, this Dave, this America

Yes. This is Stern at his best.
Stern is a genius. He knew he had to get as much out of his mouth for an audience that would otherwise never hear him.
I love how Howard just came out and exposed the whole show
It was a tad rude to demand he go out the garbage truck alleyway, even if you're not a fan of Stern.
Howard Stern has an outfit for every decade of the millenium.

It's not the fact that Howard changed. Everyone changes the problem is he became exactly what he claimed to hate.

Just wonderful how well Letterman could riff with stern while leno squirmed in his seat like a child not knowing what to do.
