- Fannie Flagg started as a stand-up comic who found fame on the small screen. She co-starred on the TV shows "Candid Camera" and "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" and was a staple on 70's game shows including "Tattle Tales" and of course, "Match Game". Flagg continues to do occasional film work and starred on Broadway in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. But her greatest fame has come as a writer. Her best seller "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café" spent 36 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list and was turned into the hit film Fried Green Tomatoes. On this episode of InnerVIEWS..., Ernie's conversation with comedian, actress, author and Academy Award nominee - Fannie Flagg.

Miss Fannie Flagg is Southern Royalty. She may be liked all over but she is adored down here. This was a great interview. Ernie Manouse asked all the right questions.

I’ve always loved Fannie Flagg. Now I love her just a little bit more.
I just adore her, what a sweet lady. I too had a learning disability growing up (in the 70's) & I was told I was stupid by many, including a 4th grade teacher.
When I was 49 (2011) After testing I was told I had ADHD. I worked on reading a book over & over again. First it was paragraph over & over till I could comprehend what it said. Then page by page. I went back to high school in 2015 & earned my credits for a diploma in September 2017.
One of my favorite books I've read was Fried Green Tomatoes. I read another one she wrote but I can't recall the title. It was about a family living in a little town and the Mama & Grandma had a morning radio show...loved it!!!
Anyway, I hope she is doing well and staying indoors during this nasty Covid crisis.

What a delightful lady! I remember her from Match Game but learned a lot about her other wonderful talents Such a nice person!
I am dyslexic and so is my one of my sons. We caught him early and he got the help he needed. And he felt stupid. I did too at times growing up... but I knew I knew a lot of things so I pushed through it and got a college degree. I told my son at one point when he thought he was stupid. "Son, stupid people don't realize they are stupid. They just go through life thinking they are smart." So, he realized he wasn't and knew that he had a very special mind and way of thinking out subjects.
FIRST DESLEXIC TEST I TOOK WAS ... WROTING THE ALPHABET A-Z WITH EYES CLOSED... AS WUICK AS YOUCAN WITH EYES CLOSED... AND WITHOUT THINKING OF MY HAND DOING WHAT WAS NEEDED... SEVERAL WERE BACKWORDS... I COULD SPELL WORDS CORTECTLY...VERBALLY.
WRITTEN WAS REVERSAL OF LETTER COMBINATION
OMG! I just randomly searched for Fannie Flagg early video clips and this video with Ernie Manouse came up in the recommended videos. Ernie Manouse is becoming a legendary figure in the Houston area during the Covid-19 crisis. Seriously, abandoning his other duties to host a five days a week coronavirus show on KUHF has kept us alive.
Seriously, when the history of covid-19 is written, Ernie Manouse will be in the books.

As another dyslexic kid I’m just impressed by Fannie. I too wasn’t only hindered by reading and writing in school but with math also. So I really had a tough go of it. And just as the school system was figuring out the mystery of dyslexia I was entering junior high school. So for my first 6 years I was sort of left to fend for myself. So I understand what school was like for her. Taking timed test was excruciating. I have a tough time reading a question and being able to understand it on a quick time limit. Sometimes I need to read it over a few times to grasp it. So then they realized in middle school I was able to take test easier if I wasn’t reading it. So someone read to me. Or later on I was able to take the test by listening to a cassette tape of the teacher reading the questions. And as far as note taking. I brought a tape recorder and I taped instead of writing my notes. Then my mom would transcribe them for me. And for test that required written answers (not multiple choice) I would tell my assistant what I wanted to answer and she would write my answer. Otherwise the teacher wouldn’t be able to read my writing and they wouldn’t need to wonder what I was trying to spell. And they had no methods to help with math. So I really fell thru the cracks on that one. I was successful in my adult life. I have a career I love. A career I never thought I would have, because I didn’t think I was smart enough. But I’ve had my career for the last 25 years. I married my high school sweetheart. We met 36 years ago, married 34 years ago, we have 5 children all grown, and 12 grandchildren. I’m doing great. I couldn’t of asked for a better life.
Wishing the interview had never ended. I enjoyed it so much. I love Fannie, but I also love Alabama. Would totally love to meet her one day. Loved her on Match Game. She needs to write a book on the beloved characters she was with for so many wonderful years.

I just love you Fannie you are still as beautiful as you were on Match Game. Fannie was the funniest person on that game show. I'm so glad for this interview I was just thinking about Fannie and how she was. I know this is old but I still like the interview.
Love ya Fannie. I was slightly dyslexic a loving Mom , patient Father and some of the first Special Ed teachers help me get through it.

Great Innerview, thanks for sharing! I have been looking for her, I’ve always loved and wanted to meet Fannie Flagg ever since Fried Green Tomatoes. I loved the movie and when I found out she had written the book about it first it made me love her more. That has been a dream of mine to have my stories/book(s) transformed into movies and stage plays. I also remembered enjoying watching her as a kid on Match Game. “With These Hands; A Country Girl Came To Town” is my first book. I have more in me. I did win an award for With These Hands. I am so glad Fannie Flagg is still around, I would still love to meet her!

I enjoyed her talking and I like the stories she talked about.
What a class act. People of her generation, and generations before her really had talent, and they had respect. Nothing at all like the “celebrities” of today. She should do a one-woman show about her career, her life, much like what Bea Arthur did. She would probably sell out with each show. I would like for someone to write about their Match Game days, because I’ve read about one regular on the show who appeared on the show to be nice, but I read he was really a jerk. I’d love to read about the friendship between Brett and Charles.

I love her books. Gay or not she’s a great ambassador for the south. Her books are full of imagery. She’s hysterically funny. I wish she had done more TV. I wonder if the Dick VanDyke Show 2.0 is on YT.

In the 70s I used to wish I were 20 years older because I thought Fannie was GORGEOUS!! I wanted me some Fannie Flagg!! She's still not bad looking even though she's now in her mid-70s.
I've read all her books. A very entertaining writer. My favorite was "Welcome To The World, Baby Girl!" I highly recommend her books for an easy, entertaining read.
I have loved Fannie since 1959 when we were young together and she was Patsy! She is an incredible actress and she should play Amanda in The Glass Menagerie!! She almost did it for me when I was directing a summer theatre years ago. Her acting skill is totally stunning. I wish she would do more!!! xow.p dremak

Going out to get her books. I didn't know until today that she wrote FGT... I only know and love her from repeat episodes of match game that are a hoot to watch... it was a better time back then when America wasn't so PC
I still can't wrap my head around Fannie being lesbian. That's a good thing. She has broken the stereotype. It means regular everyday down home people can be gay and that's okay. Their personal lives are just that, nobody else's business.

Wow, so interesting to hear her tell stories. Forget that she cant spell and good spellers are annoying anyway, she is a special person that has far greater god given talents than most academics that think they know it all but are usually missing the bigger picture.
Wish they had talked more about Match Game! I just saw an episode where she is flirting outrageously with a male contestant, interesting knowing now what we do about her!

I have dyslexia I haven’t been diagnosed by a doctor I realized it when I was older and other people who knew what dyslexia was told me Larry you have dyslexia. Now what happened was my experience the school was exactly what she saying I read all the time and the teachers told my mother no he doesn’t read all the time and my mother would say yes he does he has all it would take no no he doesn’t read all the time and she would say do you are you saying I’m lying and they would say he doesn’t read all the time he doesn’t read well and she would say he reads very well he reads all the time listen to him read he’s in the top reading group and they say we put them in the bottle really quick she said why do you do that can you tell the time it rains better than anybody and they take because of the tests he does badly Iowa tests school is rigged It’s not about education and today it’s about indoctrinated but basically it’s about money it’s a money making institution the teachers come out and say we want this for the children we need money for the children the budget has to be bigger for the children and then the money goes to who to the teachers unions to the teachers that you need to get up there and scream and the money goes to the teachers and then the teachers have to pay more money to the union is they got more money in their salaries and there you go it’s all about the money and the students get the same old books to get treated the same way and on and on it goes the school still dirty Dester still beat up it’s all a rip off. People just are so stupid they rather remain mentally asleep and that’s a school teaches them to do by the way. So here you have a woman who like me as a writer and writes things that are Published and do well in school said no you can’t do that you’re not supposed to do that you’re not able to do that. When I was in high school and college they said this guy is brilliant it’s a great rider but now when I was in grade school it was oh he’s an idiot he can’t spell.

I really enjoyed her comedy (and still do, actually) on Match Game.
In real life, however, I have found her to be unapproachable, aloof, and standoffish during the several times (different years) that I have been around her 🤷♀️
She walks around with a nasty expression on her face, and is much more enjoyable to watch on the small screen.
I still cannot comprehend the Doctor Jekyll/Ms. Hyde difference.
Perhaps she is over obsessed with her lack of Spelling skills and her dyslexia.
Ironically, and I am a great fan of Match Game, I would have never been aware of her self-perceived "deficiencies."
It is tragic that she has allowed her insecurities to (apparently) affect her behavior in public.
While writing this, I was listening to the interview ---- and feel as if I can understand her Jekyll/Hyde behavior better now . . .
