I won't have a hygienist anywhere near my mouth as a professional! When I was 3 mths off finishing 9 yrs of orthodontics, one wrecked both my upper and lower braces! As I'd just been 2 days before to the orthodontist, I had to wait with 2 broken braces, for a whole month! My teeth moved so much, that I had to spend an extra year in braces! I was NOT a happy bunny about that!
My favourite part of working in dental surgery, was home time! I would recommend bringing children to the surgery as soon as possible after birth. If you leave it for as long they suggest here, the kid could easily develop a lifelong phobia! My first dental check up was at about 3 months. I don't recommend every child has fluoride varnish painted onto their teeth as a matter of course either. The vast majority of children, if they are taught to brush correctly, should get enough fluoride from a combination of good diet, and a children's fluoride toothpaste. However, if any decalcification is present, THAT'S when topical fluoride, and in some cases a low dose fluoride tablet or liquid, in drop form should be prescribed. Too much fluoride, can cause soft enamel in extreme cases, or staining of the future adult teeth. Not all places thankfully, have fluoride in the water.
