Here's the first brand-new original song on Insane In The Rain (since Forward was originally written in 2019!) I am a huge fan of Snarky Puppy, and while writing a song that sounds like Snarky Puppy wasn't exactly the goal of this track when I sat down to write it... in the end it ended up sounding a LOT like a Snarky Puppy track and I am super okay with that!
The name "Luminaire" comes from the game Chrono Trigger! In Chrono Trigger, the main character Chrono eventually gets access to a very powerful light magic spell called Luminaire. In the attack animation, he rises into the air, and lets out this big explosion of light that does big damage to all the enemies on screen. I thought this was a nice metaphor to capture the meaning of this song!
I think every person has some kind of light inside of them - through everyone's differing experience of being human, we all develop different things that make us unique. When people find their way to share that unique light inside of them with the rest of the world... something special happens. That is the essence of Luminaire, just like how Chrono uses the attack in Chrono Trigger!
When I told this story to the band, we started referring to anyone's solo section as their time to "Luminaire" all over the track (in similar language to throwing up... gross!) You could say that Dom Luminaired all over this track with his drum solo at the end... and Rob's piano solo beforehand was also a Luminaire. There's too much going on in this track for me to draw attention to everything, but some of my favorite parts are the fretless bass solo at the beginning, the way the guitar melody during the chorus interplays with the horn backgrounds, and all the percussion throughout the song :)

There's something about your music that feels really recognizable. The same sort of feeling from your jazz cover arrangements can be felt in this and it really shows how much your arrangements were truly your own. I'm not sure if it's down to instrumentation or style choices but it feels both fresh yet familiar.
aw, thank you so much! yeah, I think through doing all the covers I did, I was able to discover a bit of what my own personal sound is, and that shines through in everything I do in some way :)

Listening to this track was such an emotional ride. At first I was just so focused on the absolutely insane sync of everyone and all the instruments melding together so perfectly, but then I just closed my eyes and thought about a bustling city at night, life in the streets, parties all around, and music filling the air. Absolutely vivid, which just goes to show how talented all of y'all are and how well you work together. I don't care if constant content is gone if we can get insane pieces like this every so often.

This song feels like waking up on a brisk winters morning, sunrising over the blue glow of the freshly laid snow, and getting excited for all the fun ahead the day is offering. Beautiful.

One thing I really like about these videos so far is that everyone is visibly excited and happy to be there playing with each other and I think it just makes for a really good vibe. Also, it’s super cool that every instrument gets its time to shine! My friends and i are so excited for the upcoming album, please keep doin what you’re doin :)

Such a bright and optimistic track! I like how each instrument has a certain spotlight throughout the song and reminds me of Mario Kart 8's Soundtrack. I SERIOUSLY hope Nintendo branches out their composers beyond Japan because I really want to see (and hear!) your work get as much exposure as possible!

I was finally able to take some time and sit down with my father who's turning 64 next month and listen to this complete album on a streaming service. He really enjoyed it. We both agree that our favorite cuts are this, the missing piece, flow, ubuntu and invisible man.
I was not ready. Nice and peaceful at the beginning but once it picked up holy cow it picked up! Blew my skull out of the water
