- It's the world's most closed country, over the last few decades, very few foreigners and even fewer journalists have gained access to North Korea.
TRT World’s Imran Garda was invited to visit the so-called hermit kingdom to take part in the Pyongyang marathon and be shown the city's tourist sites. It's a country known for its ballistic missile tests, its nuclear capabilities and a well trodden path of sabre rattling. But it's also a country governed by the Juche ideal of self reliance and a country with enormous national pride. A country of paradoxes, this is ‘The Newsmakers in North Korea.’

You can never have enough N.K documentaries.
martin nettey RT Uploaded a new documentary on N. Korea a few days ago.
I agree.Ive watched about 7 the last 2 days
As someone who's been there I agree
Hahahaha agreed !
agree - I'm hooked
The quality on the video was some of the best I've seen come out of North Korea. Thanks.
I agree
Kyra Murray 9
Kyra Murray what do you mean lol what Syrian news ???
Just what i was thinking as well when i saw this video.
He's impressed by the sovjet style subway station but then this stone age berlin subway train rolls in.... no comment on this :D
btw great documentary and awesome quality! one of the best I've seen so far
you know they hear you on the hotel right?
exactly wired
oops.
Bandy Santana That's Why he Probably is dead.
john Grijalba its obviously bugged
I am wondering, do the guides have to run the marathon with you?
It's because their all slaves to a regime and there's no room for progress or advancement for the pp who work harder than others. Why don't you talk about the 500 hundred thousand plus pp in concentration camps. All these pp are brainwashed in to thinking the same from day one their birth. Don't make stupid comments about something you know nothing about.
+but2star Religion has nothing to do with it and it's completely pointless in your whole comment. In most other countries people are free to be, to do and to own. That of course creates competition and will lead to SOME crime. But it also leads to progress. In North Korea EVERYONE is a victim of the crime at all times, the crime of being completely controlled, doing just what they're told to do. Freedom with a possibility of some crimes is still much better than being in a completely controlled environment, where you're controlled as well.
They may have less murders committed by one citizen over another, but the amount of people government tortures and kills more than compensates for it and testimonies from those lucky one who managed to escape the country will give you the best picture of what it's like beyond the stage set for journalists.
but2star While I am not sure how is your comment relevant to mine, what are the sources to your information?
+but2star In most countries religion and government are separate things. Religious rules are not the law and religion can't punish people with their ancient punishment techniques. Few places where that can happen are a few islamic countries where religion is law and sharia law is practiced. But even there people have more freedom than people in NK, and with freedom of will comes a lot of stuff, some crime included.
The point is that in NK you basically have no, or very little free will to choose as an ordinary citizen. You must work and praise the leading dynasty as gods. So it's actually a more extreme religious country than even most/all religious countries.
but2star lol... coz it is not relevant, it was considered as spam... I am not interested in flame wars + unlike you, I have a real life that makes me too busy to deal with trolls so for real this time byebye
the best video I had ever seen about north korea, good job!
This was very well done. It was like a much mroe professional version of the vice documentary. Which btw if you haven't seen that one it's a must watch!
Except for the fact that this video totally ignores the crimes and horrors happening in North Korea.
+vidaett first look at ones own backyard before commenting on others
Robert Which backyard would that be? Norway?
No you're right. There's some real horrible stuff that goes on there. All you have to do is watch some videos about N Korean escapees. But the video quality was still good.
Did he not know that the hotel room is probably bugged though? Saying those things could get him into some shit.
I bet Kim reads through the comments section of you tube on all N.K. Videos on his smart phone..
as if you didn't think your room wasn't bugged
+Michael Williams There is a reason North Korea doesnt have American spies
What camera was used to film this? Awesome looking video
This got to be the best video i have ever seen about North Korea.
Good stuff. Subscribed.
one of the best videos about north korea i have ever seen good work.
Enjoyed that ty
Did you see any subway stations other than the one they wanted you to see?
gmc9753 There's only one, you see it in all the videos of NK. The train just runs up and down for tourists and it's full of actors. The whole thing is a sham.
Well, not really. That it has just two stations is a conspiracy theory. The metro there has two lines and heavily patronised, because that's the cheapest transportation option there.
no,u cant go anywhere without permision
One's expected to attain a permit in order to travel outside of the CITY. The subway line is merely transports citizens throughout the city. Thus, citizens are capable of boarding the train considering that it is the most inexpensive and efficient method towards traveling throughout the city.
yall brainwashed by western propoganda
this is insane
(21:34) "I decided to do my bit for international relations with some HiGH FiVE diplomacy"
(and a SELFiE STiCK).
What's the name of the background music From 9:00 until 10:00?
well done mate.good one
Very interesting, thank you
too naive. They have detectaphone in all the hotel rooms for foreigners, what you've said there they basically have people kept the record, seriously. My friends were caught trying to escape the hotel in Pyongyang in the evening at the entrance without saying anything when people were nearby, they are Chinese or people look very close to North Korean people. You know what I mean.
hanbo liu o
Well done and well shot documentary, big applause to the reporter and camera man. same feeling i have more questions than ever about North Korea.
Even in HD, the people and overall vibe is like on the 70s.
I really enjoyed this.
Very nice documentary! Love to see the reporter actually standing in the DPRK. I partially succeeded in this during my trip there.
It's all a mirage, smokescreen extraordinaire which you have fallen for
Wooohoo, actual new content.. even if "new" is always basically the same tour you always get new glimpses of reality there. A surreal place unlike any place in the world and I envy the hell out of anyone who gets a chance to see it first hand.
Awesome TRT keep up nice work
thank you for your video
Great conclusion at the end! Overall really good.
Great video - what's the song called at 9:15 ?
+Proxinem Pansume
Darude sandstorm
there is one london underground station which is like a station in pyongyang and that is gants hill
Hahahaha... love the over-dramatic music during the running scene. :-D
Apparently in the afternoon... lmao
19:09 - you can learn some basics with lots of practice, but if you don't have it in you, it's like mechanically learning to play basic piano from sheet music. Most reporters are like that ;-)
I am very interested to visit, I hope!
Thanks for sharing!
People act like it's so hard to get into the DPRK yet tens of thousands of tourists go there through tours every year.
It IS hard to get in and its near impossible to get OUT the tourists that get in just get treated with the real life Truman Show and THEY are Truman yet the propaganda still manages to work on a bunch of moronic westerners.
I would like to know what happens if you just win the marathon. Especially if you would beat the supreme leaders laptime?
in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supreme leaders laptime beats You.
u get reward
As he pushed around in a wheelbarrow
Deadsentence
death
This was a good documentary
I love the frase High-Five Diplomacy. I am completely stealing it.
Democratic? Peoples? Republic? Really?
Seniors Tube best jokes ever
thanks imran garda and TRT World
The description of the Juche ideology at 11:40 made me feel horribly tense.
What an unbelievably arrogant approach to life.
George Orwell's 1984 :D
what is the song 1:59 ?
When Commander Bucher of the USS Pueblo read the official apology on DPRK radio, the DPRK authorities found his bad pronunciation of "Wepaean DPRK, wepaean Kim Il Sung" (We apologize to DPRK, we apologize to Kim Il Sung") rather amusing, as it came out sounding like "We pee on DPRK, we pee on Kim Il Sung".
If they only knew... :-D
I will go there this summer, yay!
This viedo is epic
Thats very good documentary. But we need to Turkish subtitle too.
17:05 yoooo what is this song??? Lol
Pride comes before Fall you watch, you will Fall very Soon than later.
High-five diplomacy. Awesome!
10:10 Tongue-in-cheek, 'They'll be coming in the afternoon'. Lol!
Clean ,beautiful and very nicely decorated
So nice video
1:54 this sounds like a 90s anime opening
Is called the hermit kingdom for a reason.
Traffic controllers with no traffic.
The quality of the video was amazing but I could not get through ten minutes with the haughtiest-sounding narration I perhaps have ever heard in any documentary
i wonder what kind of life people living outside capital pyongyang. only one city in this country.
Open to tourists? No it should go down in the history books as the BIGGEST living creation of the Truman show
Tell me you are getting paid by the DPRK without actually telling me. 😂🤦♀️
12:33 SONG NAME?😭
Very good
22:59 xD how they fight each other x)
05:42 How on Earth were you allowed to have your back towards the Kims? I am absolutely bewildered, because I'm pretty sure having your back towards them is considered a great insult worthy of immediate expulsion from the country...
+KaleunMaender77 He bowed as is required, after that he was reporting and it's perfectly fine (as seen in many documentaries) to stand like that and talk. They probably want that as in that position we see the giant statues in the background of the person speaking.
+Kafanska TV thanks for imparting your knowledge upon me. I was sincerely unaware of this. Thanks :)
I've seen docs in the past where the minders are also insistent that the statues must be filmed in whole from head to toe. The minders are all bark with little bite.
The DPRK is always letting in film crews and they know the doc will be edited into a negative light once outside of NK, but they need the exposure even if it's negative exposure so as to lure in more tourists for the hard currency that fuels the lifestyles of the their elite.
How did they let you take footage of the statues where they were cut?
Will a foreign tourist be punished for refusing to visit the statues, because s/he refuses to bow (to pay homage) to the statues? And, what kind of punishment will s/he receive?
Dr No I wondered about that too. I bow to no one.
22:18 somewhere from germany, wearing a Dynamo Dresden pant. hahahaha
I really reallywant to visit. N.K is something about it really mysterious.
Also a quick fun fact about TRT
TRT is an shortening of Türk Radyo Telekomünikasyon or Turkish Radio Telecommunication. It is based on Turkey and Their objective is obviously news about the world.
the may day stadium is not new, it was built in the 1980's and was given a big refurbishment in 2014.
Goodness when the other tourist bursted out “amen”. I felt a sudden fear for his life.
ahhhh, i get it 2016 AD! for a second i was confused what era this video took place in
me too I thought it was bc
3:41 did that kid just dab?
22:13 the girl looking in the other direction looks like Kim Song I's little sister
I really love them men good job nortkoria is really good my good keep them up ameen
What
Juche - total self-reliance = total dependence on China. Nice work, NK.
Dude you moved your weapon too much, that why you didn’t get any good shots.
Someone who knows the song 1:45? haha
Did you find ut what song it is?
Too bad North Korea doesn’t allow stuff like Harry Potter, MCU, Netflix, BTS, or anything else like that
North Korea would be a great place if they just would put the people first and end the labor death camps. If they just followed Human rights laws then maybe we won’t hate them as much
Andrew America has a higher percentage of people in prison. We also have more police brutality on camera. We have prison labor. We have the death penalty. Flint water is still poisoned with lead and we make them pay for it. There are areas of cities most people avoid and consider high risk. 3.5 million homeless. Millions with no health care. We hate them because we suffer from our own propaganda, not necessarily what we do say but the parts we leave out. Take a good hard look at our own country before hating on others.
Human right is set up by world powers to take advantage of the week either way both the north Korean and human rights are same but operate different way
nice job Imran Garda
RIP
Great documentary with a positive end !
Self reliance. Hah.. Right...
I find it interesting that the DPRK has its own count for what the current year is.
They have a “Juche” year and a Western count like the rest of us.
Crazy stuff!
It's a nice place, but I wouldn't feel comfortable staying there. and I like quiet places.
Soo... I'm just gonna stay here in the Ph.
I wish to understand what they use the subway for. Where are they going? What types of jobs do they have? Do they get paid well?
Do you know what communism is?
+jo kerh Forgive me but I dont know what communism is. Can you tell me please.
+David Guevara the subway is only for looks, everything north korea does is just so they look like they can maintain themselves. google communism its awful
You can bet your life there are no train services to South Korea.
como le hiciste para poder grabar, eso esta penado alla
Translation: How did you do it to be able to record, that is punished there
Of course the record of marksmanship was set by Kim Jong Un, Kim Il Song or Kim Jong Il. Who else?
He's in awe of a tube station with a single track and a clapped out second-hand train. How gullible can you get?
"Armed forces before the society"
Doesn't it mean they just need to focus on the military to keep the US off their backs?
GreenJelloHell ?
making them bow makes me feel sick. another religon. just what we needed.
In case someone actually believes that all the N. Korean metro stations are like this, there is a reason tourists are only allowed to see 2 or 3 stations.
There's one claim N. Korea will never make - That *Kim Jong-Un won the marathon...*
Finally somebody who can pronounce Juche

I like how they emphasize on self reliance, but have a network of laborers in other countries to help them collect extra income. Very strange
Blink if you are under duress.
