- The old Apple vs PC Debate, I love the old debate over time working in a PC shop I am naturally biased to PC but I have come to understand why people choose mac over PC.
There is so many pros and cons vs each platform, its really about choosing what is best for you.
One of the biggest issues is security and virus infection in the PC platform, they other is hardware faults & software problems.
For a experienced PC user these are not often a problem, but it can happen to anyone.
I know I'm not supposed to get asmr out of this channel but it's unavoidable.
I wish you would make a 2022 version/update of this video because of apple silicon and this video is definitely my favorite!!!!!

you can build or buy a $500 pc and it will have better specs than a $1000-$1500 mac. the $10,000 mac pro (fully upgraded) will cost $2000-3000 for pc.

I work in IT, specifically in a hybrid OSX/Windows environment. Up until OSX 10.6.x (snow leopard) I would of agreed that OSX was a superior platform. Ever since the 10.7/8/9 releases OSX has been shockingly bad. Main reason was the drop of the Samba oss package and Apple's half arsed attempt at a replacement. As well as butchering their enterprise hardware offerings. File sharing and collaboration between Mac and PC is hopeless now. Whilst I can recommend a Mac for home use its hopeless in a business environment. The real gripe is that more and more staff are a asking for Macs and we have to tell them they just don't work in business.

You clarified a lot of stuff I didn't know. I've had three successive macs given to me by a friend, when he'd update his computer. My only other experience was using DOS running industry-specific software, and a constructed computer as far back as windows 98. The freebie macs, I found more intuitive and easier to work with, for this user. The simplicity of a single toolbar suits me well. I'll look at a friend's screen and he's got 3" of junk at the top of every window. I enjoy going back to mine.
It all depends on whom it is for, because I am working in the music industry, well working towards getting in the industry, the most versatile machine for me would be a macbook pro as I know:
- It doesn't require external soundcard or ASIO software as it has a strong built in soundcard by default
- It lasts an extremly long like you said
- Most colleges and schools I could go to would use Macs instead of PC
- The hardware is guaranteed good, especially for high CPU taxing software which I need as music creating software or DAWs for tech term is a high CPU taxing software; can just about run on Intel i5 Quad Core Processor.
- Again as you said and from experience, it is better with design and photoshop stuff because of the hardware.
- Overall, Macs are more for people whom design, create and do stuff similar, and PCs are more for webdesigners, people who like more detailed stuff in the software which I for one don't care about.
This debate depends on what person you are, this is because it is similar to the Marmite debate, you either love, or hate it, same goes for Macs, and then PC is just what you go to if you don't like Macs.
You can order a custom built PC with the highest end level hardware available including amazing mind-blowing sound cards that are way better than anything any Mac comes with.

Fleck Apart from the OS, in which if you want the same OS on a PC without emulation, you need the same hardware or equivelant.
And including hardware, aluminum unibody design stops it from weathering as from experience, the only time I have had to get a new Laptop is when it gets too hot and you can't do anything about it, then the baseplate falls apart. The aluminium disallows that.
TheOfficialGriefer While I agree a mac will work well for you, I would have to point out you will need a real sound card for any type of recording. some new mac do not even have line in, the mix with digital out connection? it may have changed but this was the case, apple removed line inputs on some mac models.
Longevity is based or product selection and luck. Macs are prone to exact same failures as PC, they are exactly same computer. just depends on manufacture of boards.
Put a old school HP Probook against a Mac and longevity will be the same if you do not factor in luck.
But the most versatile machine will always be a PC, the one to give you less hassle will be the mac.
biggest drawbacks for me of macs are
1) expandability:
if I want a new GPU for my PC, I buy one, install the drivers, done.
if I want a new GPU for my mac, I void my warranty replacing it and if it isn't one that comes in some mac configuration it will not work at all
2) gaming:
almost all games that come out these days come out on pc. Even if they're terribly optimised console ports (*cough* assassin's creed unity *cough*) they will still be available for pc.
the only AAA games I have seen come on the mac app store are: some of the GTA games, Batman Arkham Asylum (2-3 years after the pc version came out) and some valve games (although i can't remember if they were on the mac version of steam instead of the app store)
basically, gamers will NEVER choose macs unless Apple were to make them upgradeable and worthwhile for game developers.
I don't think that apple will ever do that, it's against their philosophie and gamers are not their target audience.
And you forgot the biggest drawback: price :-)

I don't have much to contribute to the debate sadly. I've only ever known windows PC's personally and I'm not massively informed on how to get the most out of them.

the pc is better at video editing MAINLY because it supports more software and you can customize the computer to have beast processors and graphics cards to make rendering things a whole lot easier.
This is such a good video. I've always hated this debate and I'm glad that we got a semi-biased computer builder to discuss it using just the facts

negative. MAC has no pros. mac design is for simplistic users only, restrictions, overpriced, performance is well below that of a pc. Design is awful and impractical. PC does it all MAC only caters to simplistic idiots.
The original debate was due to virus susceptibility and hardware synchronicity and quality. Hackers tend to lean towards PCs because the user base is much larger; so the amount of damage that can be done is on a much bigger scale. The hardware on a Mac tends to function better as the parts are engineered to work together, rather than the random parts companies tend to mix together on a PC build. The Windows OS also has to be compatible with hundreds of different hardware drivers due to the nature of what a PC is: typically a clunked together, off-brand (non-IBM) pile of parts. There is also a heck of a lot more software made for PCs.
I used Windows for around 10-11 years and I always had problems. I know how to manage the OS properly and everything, but after so many problems it got to the point where I built my own PC. I though that would help but I still ran into hardware/software issues, and I started to get sick of the OS so I decided to try a Mac.
Well I picked up my 2012 iMac for $1100 on bid (eBay, brand new), fully specced out as I needed to edit regularly. I needed a laptop for everyday portable use and after so many laptop PC's I decided to try a MacBook Air, and that was before purchasing my iMac. Fully specced 2012 MBA $950, same circumstances as my iMac. My point is, cost isn't a problem with Apple if you are a smart consumer. I replaced my PC with a Mac, and my PC laptop with a MacBook Air, and I really enjoyed the change and I feel it was for the better.
I would 100% own a gaming PC if I played more games, but all the games I play are Mac based on Steam, or I can just boot camp it. But yeah, if you game or you love to upgrade regularly or customise your OS a lot, go for Windows. I go with Mac for the gestures, the stable OS, the great designs, the longevity of the product and it has all of the software I need for editing. I love both OS's and run them both regularly (Windows through BC or VMWARE), but I just find Mac to be the better primary OS for me. And I know that lots of my hardware/software issues with Windows doesn't make it bad, it just means I was pretty unlucky. But now that I've used both OS's and devices, I don't want to go back to Windows and I much prefer my Mac, which is surprising to me still.
I have a Macbook but this year I made my own Desktop PC and installed SolydK onto it. I find SolydK to be much better. The freedom Linux provides is great and I can do everything I need to do with it and more. I'm a software developer and Linux makes this easy.
People fail to understand the Windows 8 is different to 8.1 under the bonnet.

Wow, I'm really late to this, but I'm in the process of obtaining parts for an AMD Ryzen/RX480 PC. I've been using OS X for around 9 years now...wow, that's a scary thought. I like the stability of OS X and Macbook computers: they are built to work together. However, I'd like a more capable machine, and that's where the PC comes to terms. It's less usable than OS X to me, considering keyboard shortcuts, accessibility of options, etc., but it offers a more diverse set of hardware and software options. Gaming is one aspect of where my Macbook falls short.
A Mac is still a bloody pc just with a fancy metal case, hardware which costs little to nothing and fancy words like Retina and fusion drive aimed at less tek savvy people who are willing to spend two and a half grand and think it will be all glory
I've also made a hackintosh out of my pc and the only advantages of having a Mac is the platform featured applications such as facetime, imessage. Another point I didn't add was that iPhone's cost far more than the internal components just like a Mac. For Apple to make thier desktop Linux into a mobile platform, heavy optimization has to be done to run on the hardware.
Compared to android, thousands of devices run it from low end mini versions to high end nexus 6's. They can't optimise the os for every device.

yeh pommy already said he made a hackintosh so i think your point is mute colin as in pc can run the same os and same software as mac for a fraction of the cost with less , the same or more hardware power depending on what youre budget and choice. i can't see how the pc can lose from that stance as in "i can do everything you can do with the same hardware as you 90% of the time for a fraction of the price" how do you fight that.
i personally havent used mac os for years or tried to run it on a pc but from last time i did worked fine i wonder if you still have to be a bit picky about your hardware. (last time i did it was a lot easier with certain intel processor and chipset than it was with amd) but with new mac's supporting amd and vega that might of changed now.
i would also argue that talking about software only in this day and age is choice as in 10 years ago there was mac only software to make this arugment but today i honestly can't think of any mac only software expect in very niche fields but like wise windows has the same .
Apart from using PCs at school (up to university/college), I've always used Macs. My family has always had Macs so I'm biased to Macs instead of PCs. I do agree that Macs are in the main overpriced and you have more choice of what you can do with a PC but I prefer the feel of the Macs. They feel more robust and better put together and I also much prefer the operating system on a Mac and how it looks (not the appearance of the shell, I mean when using it), when ever I use a PC I don't get any pleasure in using it which to me, is the main thing when using a computer.
I agree with Dmitri that Macs last longer, we have a 9 year old Macbook that, i'll admit is on its last legs now, which saw me easily through my first year of uni/college (in 2014-2015) as a music student, so using lots of music software like Ableton, Logic, Subileus ect. In my experience, I don't find Macs expensive to repair if you go anywhere else but apple as, unsurprisingly, they overcharge for what can be done for a lot less but other companies and computer repairers.
I bought a new Macbook Pro at the beginning of this month for the main purpose of using for recording, producing and mixing music for the rest of my course and for the foreseeable future after my course finishes and I don't regret spending the extra money at all on something that is easy to use, I'm used to, runs everything I need, is extremely quick, very longer battery life, has an amazing retina display screen and is the same as the computers I use at uni (All iMacs). I did look at lots of different options (both Mac and PC) as well as asking musicians and producers as well as my lecturers on what they thought and in the end after trying out different computers, it was a very easy decisions to buy a Mac. Macs also have a better re-sale value so when I do want to sell it, I should get more money than if I were to sell a PC down the line.
Overall, its an extremely personal opinion and for me as a musician, a Mac is more suited to me and the joy I get from using a Mac just wouldn't make it worth buying a PC that I would have to live with for a long time and not enjoy using. As well the much lower chances of getting viruses, as In total, we have had 5 Macs over the space of about 12 years, (me, my mum and sister all currently have our own ones that are still working, whilst an iMac and the 9 year old aforementioned laptop have stopped working) we have never had a virus. Also building my own computer does not interest me at all at this moment in time.
I don't see any use in Mac and PC users going at each other because if you are serious about buying a computer, you will hopefully do your own research about what is best for you instead of listening to biased PC and biased Mac users about why what they use is better. Macs and PCs are each suited to different people and different uses such as gaming and music, so do research before buying a laptop.

Do anything you want, how you want to. That means you can also crash it.

Restricted so you can't do anything. Then claim it's more stable because nobody is able to even test that fact.
It's like riding a bus or other public transpiration that only takes you to certain places.
So of course they make a Mac look 'pretty' on the outside, and make it feel 'safe' to the common people, or nobody would use it. Because it's actually crap.
But they're ok for basic things I suppose.

For me it's mostly an OS debate. I used Windows while I was in school, but as soon I started working professionally I much preferred the Mac OS X environment. I'm not happy with the direction Windows has gone in the last few years, in fact I would rather install Linux than use Windows 8.
PC wins hands down for me, for endless business, personal, and overall reasons, but the real debate that should be going on is 'AMD or Intel?'.

I prefer Android, but I'm quite happy to use the Apple iOS, but I really find the GUI of the AppleMac OS really finicky. Going from PC (Win 7) to Macbook's OS feels like going from a mouse to a touchpad for me..
I disagree with you when you said "Apple turned their backs to professionals utilizing their machines." Thats where the Mac Pro and even the iMac comes into to play. The Mac Pro was directly geared towards the professionals. The configurations of the Mac Pro's are ridiculous, and even if you don't like it they made it very very easy to upgrade any part of the machine. No you cant do that with the MacBooks or iMacs but if they are really a professional they wouldn't be using those machines anyways.
Why don't they take best of both worlds and take the good parts from each computer and put it in to one?

It probably has to do with the fact that macs are very cookie-cutter machines and their hardware is standardised.
Every mac of the same model and series will be identical. Exactly identical.
Meanwhile, the huge variety of PC components means that it is very rare to find two PCs that are identical in specification.
PCs have more variables and inconsistencies between parts. Simply meaning it has more chances to fail.
yes, PC are built to be cheap. get a cheap one last half as long. Get a good one and with little luck will last as long as mac on average. there all the same it comes down to quality, consistency and luck. luck being most important...
DmitriTechMech While I understand this is old now, luck has nothing to do with it imho. There is no luck in taking care of your parts. You keep 'em clean, keep 'em away from dust, and aren't overclocking the crap out of anything, those parts will - without a doubt - last several, several years, easily a decade. Sure, it's luck if you never clean anything and are overclocking everything through the roof, but otherwise, there should be 0 luck invovled.

Dmitri, I found your comment from the video rather strange. Are you truly advocating that people not ever change or update their software? If not on the Internet, okay. But if connected, I’d say you must keep your software updated or risk all the vulnerabilities that will amass. Realistically, the Internet is inherent to computing, so it seems useless to advocate for no changes to software.

But a mac is a PC. PC = personal computer. All parts inside of a mac are standard computer parts.

Personally, I prefer android mostly because everyone I know owns an iPhone and I don't like having the same exact phone as everyone else. Every iPhone is the exact same to me and I think it's kind of boring. I think they're great phones, but I prefer having something more unique that I can customize and call my own.
I'd keep recommending MacBook Pro but the new os release Yosemite has been changing my mind. I'm not happy with it. But I would never ever go back to PC chaos again. Mac still feels like a jet plane after pc, the horse cart.
Can I ask you what you don't like about yosemite? I think that the new notification center and spotlight are just awesome and I can't live without them anymore.
Sure. My computer is slower than ever. That transparent background thing is quite PC-ish. Nobody needs that. Yosemite doesn't recognize my Wacom tablet preferences and wacom is a must for most designers. Mail keeps saving zillions of drafts and some of them can never be deleted. They appear deleted when you delete amd they come back in your next check in the draft box. Emptying the mail trashbox is a pain in the ass. Same thing. Deleted messages keep coming back.
I can actually live without these.
But still, i can't imagine myself using a pc. Viruses, anti-virus apps, performance (especially when you have to keep photoshop, illustrator, lightroom etc. open and awork all the time) length of startup, blue screen errors.. Nightmare!. Maybe my expectations from Mac are too high. I expect them to enhance what there already is and become a PC follower. PC has been following Mac all the time.

How is that? What advantage does windows provide over os x except gaming? I absolutely hate it to work on windows when I'm on my macbook. The lack of features, decent trackpad drivers, scaling, .. make it a real pain in the ass.
Thomas Vanhelden These are of course my personal opinions, and you might agree with some of them or not at all, but these are the reasons for my statement:
I find the window manager in Windows superior. OSX has never been able to maximize applications to the screen. They introduced the full screen mode to compensate for this, but this mode makes context switching a pain in the ass.
The whole idea of having a single menu bar at top was a great idea back in 1980's saving important pixels for each window. But with FullHD and 4K screens, this isn't really a problem anymore, and actually having to move the mouse up to the top of the screen to perform simple operations annoys me.
The ability to assign a window to 50% of the screen by dragging it to the edge. This feature was introduced in Windows 7 and was copied by major Linux distributions just a few releases afterwards.
The file manager in OSX not up to the standards delivered in Windows Explorer. Everything from browsing to doing basic actions just feels wrong. The Windows 7 file manager was good and the Windows 8 file manager is awesome. Improving a lot of the basic features like file copying and the ability to control different filters through the ribbon.
OSX also has a lot of weird defaults and settings and they're not afraid of forcing "their" way upon everyone that touches Apple hardware. Even hardcore OSX users gets surprises when upgrading the OS because Apple made some crazy desicion for yo. This is a very common argument, but it's true to the point that it annoys me.
The fact that iTunes is pre-installed is a perferctly good argument against OSX...
I personally don't think Windows has a massive advantage in terms of gaming anymore. The majority of the games developed for mid-end computers/laptops are also released for OSX. For hardcore high FPS gaming, you're stuck with a desktop PC and OSX isn't really an option anyways.
The best reason to use OSX is in my opinion to get a POSIX compatible system, but then I'll be better off with Ubuntu or any other semi-open Linux/Unix distro.
On the driver issue: Must admit it's a few years since I last owned mac hardware (back in 2010), but I never had problems with the Apple drivers and trackpads. At that point i had both MacBook Pro 13" and a Mac Mini with the Magic Trackpad. The reason for getting rid of the Apple hardware was the fact that bootcamp denied me to install Windows 8 because they didn't bother to create update the drivers for their old hardware.
Apple is superior on the hardware side. Only a few vendors are even close to deliver the same build quality, and none of them do it at the same price tag (at least here in Norway).

That's personal preference. I for example really like the way windows are managed in os x.
I also really like the menu bar at the top. I strongly disagree about the resolutions. Windows doesn't use scaling and I think it's a pain in the ass to use windows on high res displays. A lot of people agree with me on this one and I think windows 10 will support scaling.

iTunes is pre-installed on os x. I understand why you find that annoying and I agree. But it's a huge part of their ecosystem so I completely understand why it comes pre-installed. I don't use it though, I'm an android user so I use google play to buy my music.
If you're a gamer you want as much games as possible and a lot of AAA games are only available for windows.

So you wanted to install windows 8 back in 2010 when it was released in 2012. I kinda understand why apple didn't release drivers for an os that was still in development and was only about to come publicly available 2 years later.

I think you've highlighted the important point here.
Apple had a distinctive share of a special industry by focusing on professional users. Why have they strayed away from this? They know that PCs are more attractive and better priced, but they are going up against them anyway.
If Macs are not going to come with professional software, then why get them...? Get a PC and buy or download one of many professional programs suited for what you need and get the flexibility of a family computer.
Macs need to be more different than PCs and need to be for a more specific target audience.
And they need to sort their price strategy out because it doesn't make sense if they are using the same hardware as cheaper high quality PCs.

Yes, that's true, you can build a windows pc with the exact same specs for 10-15% less money than a mac pro. Is that so overpriced? They didn't only put money into the parts, but only into their designer team who had to find out a way to make it very compact and yet cool and quiet. That's also a lot of money and it's a good thing, looking at the temperature and noise benchmarks. But still then you'd get outperformed by the mac pro if you use the exact same parts, so you'll be forced to invest some more money if you want equal performance and you'll end up spending as much or even more.
Thomas Vanhelden The mac pro is obselete. Need to video edit? Buy a tesla gpu to accelerate your cpu. When you accelerate your cpu instead of overclocking it would take two mac pro 8 core or whatever to match that.

This discussion is about the price of the mac pro, so if windows and os x support tesla and it's in the same price range with better performance. Then I have to admit that mac pro is overpriced.
But those things still look very huge, that's a disadvantage compared to the mac pro.
