My daughter received one of these as a cheapo gift from my in-laws and I made fun of it constantly. Well, as fate would have it, I was driving her car in the middle of nowhere due to mine being in the shop, and blew a tire. After getting everything jacked and the tire taken off, I found the spare flat and sure enough she had this damn little air pump in her trunk. Well, it took a long time, got hot as hell, but did the job and I was on my way. My daughter bought me one for my birthday to rub it in.

Hugh Janus Funny, I got one of these for a white elephant Christmas gift and threw it in the trunk and hardly thought of it until I came out of work one day to find a tire super low. Plugged it in and sat and listened to the radio while it ran, cut it off when the housing started to smoke and it got me back to my shop. Cheap shit that I don't have to think about, but gets the job done when you need it; what more could one ask for.

Cheap as they are, it's much better than using a foot pump. With the foot pump, it would take at least 100 pumps to add 10psi to the tire, while the air pump took at least 5 minutes.

I had one of these (Motomaster or Cetified re-brand) in my trunk and used it on a regular basis. Bought it in 2004 and the motor finally packed it in three months ago. I had to re-Teflon the gauge threads and replace the 12-volt plug, but that thing was a tank! Best $15 (I think) I spent for personal roadside flat repairs. Mine warned of a 15 minute 50% duty cycle that I completely ignored too.

You should do a surface RA test on the sleeve to determine its surface area roughness
not all sleeves are honed but drawn extruded to the proper ra finish to < 30 ra
Also not all cups(rings) have oil some use proprietary composite to transfer material to the sleeve so scoring is filled in with cup material to aid in break in and lubrication throughout its life at optimal temperatures.

As a "proud" owner of one of those pumps I have to say that their limit is about 30 minutes of constant operation ... (top up 4 tires and fill a fifth). at that point even the cord was hot and the plug was uncomfortable to touch. but yeah will do the did if the need arises (better to by a new one after some time tho, just think of it like the fire extinguisher or the pharmacy in our car). I find chineseum perfect... if you know what you are buying :P (you only want to "use" (read 'abuse') it once? there is over a 90% chance of the thing getting fubared during first use (even if it is something from a reputable maker)?, do you enjoy fireworks? then buy the absolutely cheapest/crapiest thingy you can find in the shop)

these things aren't too trashy, I used one like it for about 3 years, always picking up nails and shit with my tires, the failure came from the hose, it cracked and tore, I didn't want to fuck around with changing the crimped on hose out, so I just replaced it. $15 is only $15. I've spent more money on stupider stuff that won't save my ass on the way to work. bet everyone has!

I pulled an old Crambel Horsefeild one apart, the one without a gauge, but about the same size case as that'un, the works on it are even smaller. I stuck the guts into an old mil-spec first aid plastic box and it fits under the seat of my motorcycle. I've had use for it on the side the road several times myself, helped an old couple in Arkansas air two tires and get them to their doctors appointment, and for a few years, it was the only compressor I had on hand.
I'm amazed it still works, and still works better than the Slime branded one I got for the other bike a year or so ago.

Bonus points for pairing with a tire patch kit. I've had mine for at least three years and it's been tossed around the back of three different trunks.

  • @EdWatts
    @EdWatts Pƙed 7 lety +4

If 75W - 140 doesn't fix it, it's time for some serious measures! Many years ago, I had a Chevrolet K-20 Suburban which had, once upon a time, belonged to Uncle Sam. It came to me from auction with a (Saints be praised!) Muncie M-465 four-speed manual transmission and a New Process 205 transfer case -- and a (Uncle Sam be damned!) bad clutch. Taking the transmission/transfer case out was like removing a Chevrolet "Big-Block" engine from below., and putting everything back was even worse. My first "test" drive revealed that the transmission and transfer case had been used well past their "BEST BEFORE" mileage, prompting me to drain the SAE 90 oil from each and replace that thin, blackened fluid with a 50-50 mixture of SAE 140 (no lower-number "W")and STP.
Although it took almost two hours to get this nearly-as-thick-as-RTV mixture into the gearboxes, driving the vehicle around the block that afternoon indicated that I had, indeed, made the operation of the vehicle MUCH quieter, causing me to ratchet my engineering prowess up by several points; pizza and beer for all!
The next morning, however, found the ambient [outdoor] temperature to be about 30Âș (about 1Âș below zero for those of you who have converted to Satan's system!), and, immediately after I backed out of the driveway, I discovered that, despite the strength of athletic youth, a shifter which was longer than a bull's pizzle, and pure determination/desperation and cussedness, I was entirely unable to change gears from "R" to "[anything which would allow the vehicle to move forward and take me to work]". Some thirty-minutes'-worth of experimentation -- and swearing/thinking/guessing/praying/hoping -- eventually got me moving forward, but quite a bit of head-scratching and other considerations occurred in that half-hour.
After that morning, I would start the engine and allow it to idle with the transmission in first gear (where it was always left the night before), and the transfer case in neutral (where it was always left the night before) for at least ten minutes before even considering pulling out of the driveway; I endured this nonsense for several years before purchasing another vehicle. That Suburban was still running quite well when I sold it; but I never told the [once-]happy new owner that the drive train, while as quiet as could be, had been filled with a mixture which resembled so much saltwater taffy when below 70Âș (21Âș for the Satanists in the North!).

I have one of these as a backup for my hand pump at the track. If you're patient, they will do the job over time. My original use for it was bumping the pressure up in a pneumatic spud gun. I'd use a regular compressor to pump the 6 gallon reservoir up to 120psi quickly, then let the little pump push it up to 250psi. It wasn't fast, but it'd do the job.

I have a very similar unit that I bought in 2005 or 6 for about $12.50. Have used it many times over the years and amazingly it still jumps around today. In fact used it the day before yesterday to air up the tires on the Oxy/Acy cart. Surprising device considering what it cost.

Ave says "When you compress air, it heats up." No Sir! People say that wrong all the time. We all know when you heat up air (any gas for that matter) it expands. So when you compress it, it has to give up heat. That's the real reason the compressor heats up. The air has to transfer it's heat into the compressor.

Not just pointing out you made a mistake. We all make mistakes. But thinking about it incorrectly can make our attempts to mitigate a problem ineffective.
If a gas can't dump it's heat into something, it can't be compressed (practically speaking). The more heat the compressor parts hold the harder it is to dump more heat into them. If you can take away the heat (say aluminum heat sink with a fan) you can make the compressor more efficient.

Not how it works, friend. Temperature is a backdoor measurement of how much energy the particles of that thing have. The more energy, the hotter it is. Compressors work by shoving more air into the same space. More particles means more energy and therefore more heat.
For a gas under pressure the temperature (T) = the pressure (P) multiplied by the volume (V) divided by a constant (k*) i.e. T = PV/k. As you can see, if you increase P without altering anything else in the system (as is the case for an air compressor) T also increases.
*k is the product of the number of moles of gas (n) and the ideal gas constant (R). The constant doesn't change and the number of moles we're talking about changes very little at the kind of pressures this machine works at so I bundled them together. The equation in its usual form is: PV = nRT

I have one of those pumps. It is small and a really nice thing to have when you are out in a national park and have a slow leak in a tire. One use and it has paid for its self. The short hose meant I had to find an object just the right height to hold the pump up.
The funny thing is, looking at the insides, I thought "I could design one cheaper to make". They have more parts than needed in mine.

Perfect timing, mine failed 2 weeks ago after about 2 years of decent use. The "piston ring" on top of the piston popped off and jammed up the works, I took it apart and snapped the ring back on but the reed valve had been hit by the loose ring and wouldn't seat on the seal anymore. I was genuinely sad, for $10 it worked well enough to fill my slow tire leaks once a week, albeit at 1 psi per minute

Jo I got the same thing like for 10 bucks from eBay, I paired it with a 12V motorcycle battery put a switch between and a small 12v lead acid charger. stuck it all down to a plate, mounted handles and now I use it to fill my motorcycles and my bikes tiers. BTW I also added a 12v PC fan on one side to cool the motor (cut one side of casing open, mounted it with hotglue) now you can theoretically run it like forever. quite handy thing

I own a different brand of the same compressor. it's cheap and probably doesn't last long, but it's so tiny it fits inside the glove box of my motorcycle and it has saved me from a very very long walk more than once. Simply plugged the hole with a repairkit, inflate to a reasonable pressure and go to the nearest gasstation to inflate to normal since the small compressor takes a while and draws quite a lot from my small battery.
Even once helped out a friend who punctured his car tire so he could have it fixed properly.
So all in all i think it's great, I just wont rely on it to use it regularly, just as an emergency fix for on the road.

I own two different Chineseium compressors, one is about 16 years old, and the other about 5 years old. The 16 year old one (a Campbell Hausfeld from Wallyworld) still works like new (as in, still takes 12 minutes to fill a car tire). The Slime brand one I got about 5 years ago hasn't been great. It fills a car tire slightly faster than the old one, but the gauge on it failed after the first use (not that I would have ever trusted it anyway), and the plastique handle on the "chuck" broke. Went down to the Hazard Fraught and picked up a locking brass chuck head and a barb fitting and she chooches good now!
