  • Video of life inside an enclosed Carmelite community, including short excerpts of interviews with some of the Sisters. The Discalced Carmelites of Wolverhampton, UK, would like to thank Miranda Tasker and Marcus Nield, who made this film, for their hard work and professional skill. With only basic equipment, they did the filming and put together the presentation with sensitivity and understanding.

    To all the people who can't understand why they want to stay away from the world, think about it like this: when you fall in love with someone, I bet you want to spend all your time with them. They are the centre of your life right? These nuns are in love with god. They want to talk to him. Be with him. Read works on him. His voice is clearest when they are in silent contemplation away from the world. They have a desire to know God, speak to him, to understand him. I think to a certain extent, most intorverts will be able to relate to the idea of being by yourself in the quietness. Some people enjoy it. It doesn't feel like a punishment.

    My late wife was a Carmelite in her youth. It was a life devoted to grueling work and prayer, meditation and silence. After two years as a Novitiate, she declined her final vows. But as long as I knew her, my beloved wife embodied the teachings of the The Little Flower and was a blessing to all who knew her. She did not gossip, kept secrets, was loyal and in spite of failing health, always eager to help and work hard. She remains my only devotion to this day. Bless those that carry on and bless her eternal soul.

      PS: These Carmelites are fortunate, they make noise! In my wife's time you were frowned upon if you made noise while eating or if you were working. No idle chatter and TV and Radio were strictly rationed as were newspapers or magazines. Scrubbing floors on your knees and cooking with huge pots starting right after prayers and before Dawn.

    I was raised in the convent by the Dominican Nuns. I cannot compare my life there with others who were raised in a "normal" home, but I can say that I was truly loved and cared for by them. I was educated by them and went on to receive my degree in medicine. I have never missed or wanted what I never had ... Parents. I consider myself lucky and very special to have been loved by these truly wonderful and caring people💕

    Do not underestimate the academic achievements of these women. They are sent to the best catholic universities in Europe, they need to master a minimum of 3 languages, they have to finish an academic degree before final vow. They have to study philosophy, theology, and biblical studies like priest before admittance to the professorium. They are not enslaved, ignorant of brainwashed. Monastic people like these women saved our western civilization together with monks.

    A classmate of mine went to join the Carmelite sisters after we graduated from high school. I never really talked to her a lot but she was pleasant to hang around with whenever I got the chance. She was always so quiet and was never really quick to anger when something went wrong. Most of the time in our classes she would be reading a book quietly to herself while everyone else was busy being noisy. She was a very strong Catholic. She’s always wanted to become a nun especially a Carmelite one. I may not be a strong believer in God but I know that she’ll find true peace and happiness in the sisterhood. I also know that she’s praying for me in there. She sacrificed a normal life to live this one. I hope to someday see her again. 🙂❤️

    I'm not catholic, im an evangelical Christian, but I respect these womens way of life and I can understand the choice to live a life set apart from the world devoted to God. Many might call it boring or pointless but it's not, not when you know Jesus, what a blessing it would be to grow closer to God without having to battle with the world holding you back.

    They're in convent voluntarily as a sacrifice to show their love for Jesus.
    They are not in prison, they want the solitude for themselves. (E.g away from the sinful world, temptations etc)

    Fellow Protestants, if you hate nuns and Catholics so much, why even watch this video? There are millions and millions of videos on CZcams, I'm sure there are a few out there that will fit nicely into your narrow world view. Or, perhaps on the other hand, you might consider the fact that "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved"--and I'm pretty sure that covers most sincere Catholics quite nicely. These are women who have devoted their lives to Christ; and whether or not you agree with their method, you have to admire their dedication and love for Him. Jesus said everyone would know His disciples by their love, and yet what I see in this comment section doesn't look at all like love in comparison to what these women are doing. I'm not calling you unsaved, but encouraging you to search your own heart and ask: who is behaving like the true Christian here?

I really believe that only those who can't comprehend the spiritual significance of what they are doing are those who come and bash them and others. They are literally crucifying the flesh and emulating modesty, honesty, and humility. Someone apart of the carnal world wouldn't understand the things nuns do. Being a nun is definitely a calling and everyone chooses to dedicate their lives to the Lord differently. So be careful when you judge them because you will surely reap what you sow. As I was taking some nursing courses for renewal of my RN license, this video caught my attention and as I started to watch it, it filled me with such a peace, I can totally say I left "my reality" for a moment and was in such a beautiful place filled with God's peace. I lived with the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco for almost a year as I was their nurse for the convent (total of 80 nuns). I have visited nursing homes so many times and trust me, there is a big difference. Many nursing home residents seem so lonely, sad and depressed compared to elderly nuns. I think the reason for this is not only prayer, but most importantly, the fact that they are constantly active and they are always surrounded by people that care so much about them. Many (not all) nursing home elderly need
    accompaniment, they need their family, friends and people that care for them to spend more time with them.
    Nuns are very hard-working people (I was impressed at how much they do for others), they also pray a lot and seem SO happy all the time, never alone or sad and those in their 70s, 80s & 90s are so active. Such a beautiful life when you choose to live that way. The Carmelite nuns in this video also do a lot besides prayer, which is so valuable for our world.

      jeric cordero Good point. Absolutely NOWHERE in the Bible does it say that we should pray to anyone but God Himself. That’s the very reason Jesus died. To restore fellowship with His creation and because of what He did on the cross we now can go boldly before the throne of grace. We don’t have to confess our sins to a priest who’s just as sinful as anybody else and we certainly don’t have to pray to Mary who was a sinner just like anyone else. Mary was chosen by God but Mary isn’t divine and YES she had sex with her husband after Jesus was born. Jesus had brothers for goodness sake. Also , Mary was the mother of Jesus in his fleshly body but Mary was not the mother of God. If that makes any sense...

      @Wacholderwald Před 4 lety +1

      @@jericlamb2676 My dear, they are not dead. They are ALIVE in CHRIST. They are face to face with Him, therefore they are more alive than we are. We are part of their family, the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ is alive, on Heaven and on Earth, they worship Him without ceasing, and they are all praying for you and I. If they are dead, then Christ died in vain, and our faith means nothing. Do not let the doctrines of man rob you of the blessings of your spiritual inheritance; you have been grafted into the Vine "I am the Vine, you are the Branches".

    • @Wacholderwald
      @Wacholderwald Před 4 lety

      @@tonydardi332 As for the gift of confession, a priest serves as a witness as you make your confession to God. The early Church confessed their sins aloud before the entire congregation. Accountability and spiritual guidance and the Grace of God covering you as you humble yourself before God and a human witness. This is the spiritual warfare: fighting against your own secret sins and temptations, not hiding them and carrying them around by yourself. Confession is a gift from God for you, the Prodigal, to run back to God, and for you dragging your sins to him with shyness, embarrassment, maybe despair. This is how we know the joy once more, again and again, of God's blessed forgiveness. Unless you've experienced it, I can't make you understand it. Those who have been forgiven much, love much. I am not a Roman Catholic, I am Orthodox, but I am a Christian, who has found the pearl of great price. And do you think that you will make the Lord, Jesus Christ, happy with you by disrespecting his mother?
      Incidentally, what you have declared is a great heresy that was used to try to deny Christ's Deity. The early Church declared that the mother of Christ to be the Mother of God, because Christ is God. In Greek she is called "Theotokos", the Mother of God. This was done to defend the true doctrine of Christ's dual natures: He is both God and Man. Different heresies were lopsided in their view - they thought He was all Spirit, not man; or he was just a man, anointed by the Spirit. He was 100% God, the Third Person of the Trinity, and He was 100% Man, able to share in our sufferings. The Church, before there were schisms, taught this truth, not to make Mary into a goddess, but to defend and protect the true understanding of the Divinity of Christ. Heretics called her the mother of Christ; believers called her the Mother of God, because she, through the grace of God, gave birth to God, so that we might be saved.

      Having a life like that is great. Simplicity is awesome.But I find it hypocritical to say it's for religious reasons. It goes against the bible (at least the new testament) as Jesus was against people relying on other's money for survival and calling it faith. Jesus literally told people to go out and spread the gospel, as he did himself. He also preached about helping others and welcoming them no matter who they are. I'm not religious but was raised in a church for 8 years and went to a private catholic school all my life. All nuns I know did something for the community, from feeding the poor, giving old people shelter or literally building a school like the one I went to. What are they doing for others?
