In this video I show off my dream rifle which is a Mark V Deluxe in 340 Weatherby Mag. I plan to use this rifle to hunt Elk, Moose, Bear and Bison. Hope you enjoy the video!
Weatherby hasn't forgotten how to make a beautiful rifle. That MK V Deluxe looks the same it has for decades - which is to say gorgeous. They've always used the #2 contour bbl for the 340, the same as for the 300, except in the Accumark which has a #3 contour bbl in all calibers. The Trigger Tech should be a huge improvement over the older triggers like my Mark V's had. In the Leupold scope lines the VX5HD is what most people want these days but the VX3HD's are rated for more eye relief, at least at the lower powers. I had a Vari X III 1.75x6-32mm on my 338 RUM and it worked great for hunting but I like more magnification these days. I would want as close to four inches as possible (or more) of eye relief on that 340. But since you have the Accubrake I wouldn't be as concerned about it. The VX5HD 3.5x15-44mm would probably be the best all round scope but any of the Leupolds from VX3HD on the low end to the VX6's on the high end would be great. Maybe my wife will let me build my dream rifle if I GAIN 45 lbs, lol!
It’s only right that a USA made rifle carry a USA scope🙌 I have been using Leupold scopes over 60 years and the only scope I buy new! Nightforce are great too but not for hunting because of the weight! I have owned just about every model of Leupold scope and wouldn’t think twice about putting that brand on my Weatherby rifle!
Nice, Austin! Even better than the rifle is the gift of health and longevity you've given back to yourself. I'm on the same journey now, down 17 lbs another 50 or so to go. Congrats on your goal. I cannot WAIT to see the content you generate with this new rifle and cartridge, and eventually, the Elk I hope you get to take with it someday. Kudos to you.
beautiful rifle congratulations. My favorite rifle i own in a sako 85 hunter in 7mm rem mag. The action is smoother than any other factory rifle ive used.
I’m not a Leupold fan but if I were to recommend one it would be the Mark 5 even though I know they are expensive. It seems like it just makes sense to put a Mark 5 on a Mark 5, lol. That rifle is gorgeous! Congratulations on your weight loss achievement. That was an awesome incentive you gave yourself. Can’t wait to see your shooting results.
Dang Hella congrats on the weight loss and indeed that is a very beautiful rifle. Congratulations again on setting a goal and achieving it rifle is definitely a prize collection
Hell ya bratha!! Congrats!! I got my dream rifle and caliber yesterday too!! Remington 700 BDL 8mm Remington Magnum!!! Love it!! I reload for 3 different 8mm mausers so I have lots and lots and lots of .323 bullets!!!!!
Buy once, cry once! Get yourself what Leupold you think is best! Congrats on your weight loss, and congrats on an awesome rifle & cartridge combo! Can’t wait to see more 340 WBY content!
Congrats man!!! That is awesome and very rewarding on both ends. A mark V Deluxe and the Browning White Gold are arguably the best looking rifles on the market. Out of Leupold I would definitely go with the VX5HD 3-15x44 with the firedot. Arguably my favorite scope I own just to pricey to put on everyday rifles. That’s what’s on my 257 Mark V and it’s a killer setup
It truly is a gorgeous rifle. I’ve always wanted a 340 Weatherby Magnum in a Mark V as well. I was introduced to the 340 Weatherby in 1996 by a friend that had one in, I believe the Mark V Deluxe as well. It knocked elk on their ass, as I saw firsthand. I was in awe of power and reach. I have two Weatherby Mark V’s. One in an AccuMark 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum that is brand new never fired. The other is brand new as well, in a 257 Weatherby Mark V Kreiger Custom Rifle. I’m looking to sell the 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum Mark V AccuMark. I’d rather have the 300 Weatherby Magnum in a Mark V. If you know of anyone looking to buy one, let me know. As usual, I love your videos and content. I agree that your new rifle will look good topped with a Leupold scope. Congrats on the weight loss as well.
Leupold VX5HD 3-15x44 or VX3HD 4.5-14x40 Will look right and will accommodate hunting and long range target work for the channel. That is a long range cartridge. A Leupold Scope with the CDS elevation turret will suffice to provide you with versatility and the HD glass provides excellent clarity and contrast.
Love it! It’s sad to me how all of these composite guns have weakened the wood stocked market. I get it, but it still doesn’t make me any less sad. As far as the scope, that gun deserves a mark 5 or mark 6 series. I’d have to look, but I don’t think they have a gloss option that would better match the luster of that bluing. Congrats on the weight loss and congrats on the new rifle, well deserved!
Congratulations on the weight loss journey and getting a beautiful powerhouse rifle with a wonderful story behind the cartridge choice. I myself need to lose 20-40 pounds and I am struggling even with going to the gym when I can. One of these years I would love to get my first Weatherby.
That’s also my dream gun. I have a 338 win mag and had a 338 ultra mag and the 340 is very close to performance of the ultra mag. I’m excited to see how it does.
Congrats! That rifle is beautiful! I have 2 mk5 deluxe's, and they are awesome! I bought a used 300 and a new 378 about 12 years ago. I really need one of the Sheridan ones. Don't be scared to hunt deer with it either. I've shot deer and antelope with my 378, and quite a few with my CZ 375H&H, and they work as great as anything. I think the 340 is probably the most beautiful cartridge in the lineup and one I wish I had. I wouldn't worry too much about the barrel size at this point. The first group I shot with my 6.5rpm #1 contour was half an inch with the cheapest hornady interlock ammo. I was shocked. I didn't realize a 300wby vanguard had to be loaded shorter. Id say get the cheapest leupold you can so we can start seeing some shooting lol. You probably should save up for a vx3 that's not too big, and see if the custom shop can make you one with a gloss finish.
Awesome ! Dad would say, LEOPOLD, Me too. Your ready for Alaska with a 3.5x10x 50 mm on all my Sako magnums for hunting and 338 with old 1.5x 5 for camp. All around lookin good brother, and more Dangerous
A few years back I won the DU gun of the year. A Vangard lasermark in 7mm rem mag. Talk about a beautiful gun. Laser engraved oak leaves and acorns. Just too pretty for Oregon, whether. Sold it a friend and got the Mk5 accumark in 7mm rem mag. Love that gun. Later that year I won the RMEF gun of the year. A Kimber mountain ascent in 7mm rem mag. Love that gun too.
Since ballistics are identical to .338 Lapua, I'd actually look into Leupold's new mk4 HD lineup. They are identical to the mk5. Come with different reticles. Sweet rifle, by the way!
You have literally made life changing choices because when you look at before and after you now look like a young brother of your old self. That rifle is nice and either a .270 or .340 is my next.
Congratulations! Absolutely beautiful. I have a Deluxe in 6.5-300. It performs and nothing feels as good in the hands and it handles recoil like no other. I would choose the 340, great cartridge. I hunted with a 338 Win for years and love it. The 340 is just so much more. I would take your rifle without a second thought. Hats off to you and your dad.
@@ReloadingWeatherby My most prize gun was given to me by my dad. He said if I received my Eagle Scout, he would buy me a new Bretta Automatic Shotgun just like his. That was the right carrot for me. I received my Eagle Scout just before my 14 birthday. Today, I would never part with the shotgun. I remember getting to look at 3 brand new shotgun and getting to pick the one that I wanted. There was one of the guns that had a beautiful wood grain and so I know what you mean when you say that you love the wood finish. 🤩
Nice rifle! Congratulations on meeting your goals, I hope you enjoy your new toy! I recommend a vx3 gloss in 3.5-10. Nice lightweight option for a heavy hitter, without breaking the bank. Obviously you made the right choice with leopold! Can’t wait for your next video
My favorite hunting Leupold is the old faithful vx-3 4.5-14x50 with the 30mm tube. Sure, the vx-5 or vx-6 probably dial better, but I have 3 of the vx-3's, and they've served me well for many years. Congrats on your rifle, hope it shoots as good as it looks.
Wow, nicely done with the weight and you earned that beautiful rifle. Don't worry about the sporter barrell, just follow WBY break in procedures and you will be fine. I still have my first MK5 looks almost as good as yours and I purchased it around 1975. I put a bore scorpe down the barrel last year and I shoot the gun at least one time a year and believe it or not the lands and throat still look new. However I shoot three shots with all my WBYS and stop and clean the barrel, this cools down the barrel and believe it or not WBYS shoot great cool and clean. Check out Eric Cortina and why he cleans his barrels and Hornady has a few Podcasts on the importance of cleaning your rifles. I know alot of people think they need a dirty gun to shoot straight. IN my experience especially with a WBY that is not true. Call WBY and discuss this with them they are always happy to talk with customers.Get a bore scope and keep the carbon and copper out of that barrel and that gun will shoot straight and last a life time, again WOW what a treasure.
Congratulations on achieving both your goals. That's a beautiful rifle no matter how you slice it. I'd but a vx 5 3-15×44 plenty magnification for elk for reasonable hunting distance. My take. Excellent choice on rifle/cartridge!
sweet and beautiful gun brother! love the gunshop you got it from too, ive lived in coalville and been going to them for a few years since they opened, if it werent for them i wouldnt have ahd ammo for my elk hunt the last ocuple years
I think the thin barrel will be lighter to carry in the back country. A beautiful rifle that is a proper elk round and a good back up for griz. Love it man!
Is beautiful. That sporter barrel may show it's con's at the range but in the field it's a pro. It is a heavy rifle to slug around the hunting grounds where you have absolutely no concern with the accuracy when the barrel is heating up after a few shots, but only the accuracy you get with that one coldbore shot.
Man that thing is so nice! i have an appreciation for wood stocks and blued finish i also like the way wood and stainless looks its a bit rare the m70 feather weight used to come in stainless and wood, I do not know why but when you where talking Elk i was thinking a mouse hunt would be cool with the 340 maybe a bit less rugged terrain depending on where you go i hope she shoots good, the thin barrel would concern me but i have see more than 1 tack driver with a thin barrel.
That is a beautiful rifle. I already have a .340 Accumark, so I would be tempted to get a .257 WM in the Deluxe. As for scopes - if Leupold would put their gloss finish on a new scope for you, that would be one fine looking rig!
The gun is an absolute Rolls-Royce, and I think it’s arguably the best Elk cartridge you can have for the none recoil shy. Would love to have one. Your weight loss is highly impressive too.
Awesome rifle!!! The wood stock is more likely to cause accuracy problems than the barrel profile. That's just a trade-off between beautiful wood and a little accuracy in extreme conditions.....
Splendid choice of caliber. I too have a Mark V 340 on my bucket list. Beautiful rifle ya have there. Optic? My choice would be a 4.5-14 VX-3 40mm. Too bad they don't make gloss scopes anymore. Would look perfect atop of the Mark V.
Beautiful rifle. You know I said it in a previous video, that gun MUST HAVE a gloss black Leupold of some kind. They make NEW gloss black scopes! You know it’s the truth! Congratulations again.
I think a Leupold scope is a perfect choice, I wonder if you can get a custom black gloss finish on it? I think all manufacturers are only making matt, I have not seen a new black gloss scope in several years, like your father's 340 would have hade.
I agree with others. VX6 HD 3-18 x50 would be awesome. I just got a MKV Deluxe in 300 wby from my dad with a 39xxx sn made in W Germany. It has a VXIII 3.5-10 I do not think it has ever been shot.
Congratulations, a older gloss finish Leupold would look great on it. And the mark V is a hunting rifle at it’s core, it’s carried far more then it’s fired, the quality that matter’s is the cold bore shot is the most accurate ( and it helps if any follow up shots hit the same place) 😂. Considering where you live I’m already expecting a bull elk hunt video this coming season.
Absolutely beautiful, congratulations! Like I said in the chat get some kind of a chamber cooler and you'll cool that barrel off quickly. The 340 is such an under rated round and a powerhouse. I'm not sure about Leupold's durability these days but don't know what else to suggest though. Nightforce 3-10x42 SHV on a rail maybe? Getting some durable scope mounts will be a must too. Hopefully it won't be too long until you are able to get out and shoot that beauty!
VX-6 HD 2-12x42 Get the glass it deserves ! That 2x is super handy for closer & wooded shooting... Especially if you were ever thinking of going after a big bear or something... 12x is enough to shoot a whitetail or muley let alone an elk @ 400 yards... More magnification is great, but losing the low end really takes away from the versatility. 2-12 is the way to go Plus, generally speaking lower power = lower weight... The mark 5 deluxe is already not the skinniest kid on the block. So it might be a good thing to keep it under 10.5 - 11 pounds 8.25lbs bare unloaded... Say 8.5 loaded Scope is 1.25lbs say rings are say 0.25lbs That's 10lbs (which isn't the worst thing considering you got yourself a .33 cal ''super" magnum. 10lbs is warranted (never shot a 340wby, but I did shoot a 338 RUM in a 700 XCR platform... Which is close-ish. It felt like it had more recoil than anything else I've shot, 300 WBY or 375 H&H. Off note : the model 70 Safari in 375 H&H was a kitten compared to the 338 RUM in that XCR, but the XCR was like 3lbs lighter, both without a brake... Hope the brake works well ! Good luck !! It's a beautiful rifle
Nice rifle! My only gripe would be the bordered checkering. As a custom rifle maker the bordered checkering is an eyesore, I much prefer borderless checkering because it shows the skill of the craftsman. Your checkering is most likely cut with a machine, good French Walnut needs to be enhanced with borderless checkering. I wouldn’t worry much about the barrel as much as I would about the bedding. The bedding is where stability starts and the barrel must float enough to not vibrate against the stock when it whips as the bullet travels down the barrel. If you are going to go with a Leupold I’d say a 5 or 6HD with a 44mm objective would look great and be the most versatile. Nice rifle all in all.
Weatherby Mark V 300 German 1:12 twist slim barrel kleingunther muzzle break Talley 20 moa pic rail Leipold Mark VI TMR Seekens rings. Tack driver Nosler 180 Accubond IMR 7828 load. Weatherby Mark V 340 has medium weight factory barrel with Wby muzzle brake. Same base and use Leupold Mark V HD 3-18 CCH reticle. Older Vari-X III that came with the rifle had objective lens housing bent from recoil. Invest in quality mounts and rings in your 340. Blessed are the Muzzle Brakes....Amen
I'm proud of you man, that's definitely a reward worth the work. I miss my 300 weatherby mkv stainless accumark. I had to sell it and get a win mag because I wasn't reloading at the time. It was just to blasted expensive at the time. For glass go big or go home, don't put cheap glass on that please 😅 Editing to say that the bolts on these guns are creme de la creme. Once you have owned one everything after it feels cheap and chinsy. Such a smooth and crisp operation 👌🏾 Mine was made in 2008 so I don't know if it was a Japanese or German or American made piece of steel. Either way they are almost like artwork.
@ReloadingWeatherby yeah upon further reading it would have to have been made pre 90's to he german or Japanese made 🤣 Either way I love the mkV platform.
Can’t wait to watch it spank your 7mm prc but your right on the barrel contour I would try a 3 shot group back to back firing to see as a baseline then try waiting 3-5 minutes between shots use factory ammo to see if accuracy increases from waiting if it does I would do my load development the same way if it’s negligible fire away.
Congratulations on your weight loss - imagine, you were carrying around the equivalent weight of a car battery with every step prior to your change in lifestyle. You will never regret a 340 Weatherby. I know you like the idea of a Leupold, but consider a Steiner Predator 8 with the 3x - 24x BDC.
The camera never picks up all the figure in the wood. I just got one for my birthday but in a 6.5-300. These rifles are sure beautiful. I have always thought the 340 is interesting. Cant wait to see how it shoots.
@@ReloadingWeatherby Yes I have, I just tried some factory 140 grain interlocks and my rifle didnt like them. They were also going 200 FPS slower then advertised, Probably has something to do with the accuracy as most overbore cartridges shoot best near maximum pressures. Ill start loading for it in the next couple weeks

Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 or VX-6HD 3-18x44
I agree 100% the VX-5HD would save you a few dollars but both would compliment that rifle very well .
Vx6 3-18x44 wandered on my 300rum.

Thanks!
sweet and beautiful gun brother! love the gunshop you got it from too, ive lived in coalville and been going to them for a few years since they opened, if it werent for them i wouldnt have ahd ammo for my elk hunt the last ocuple years
My family currently lives in Coalville, my dad and brother live up there.
@@ReloadingWeatherby my folks ran the camper world rv park for years, I miss it up there.
I think the thin barrel will be lighter to carry in the back country. A beautiful rifle that is a proper elk round and a good back up for griz. Love it man!
Awesome
Is beautiful. That sporter barrel may show it's con's at the range but in the field it's a pro. It is a heavy rifle to slug around the hunting grounds where you have absolutely no concern with the accuracy when the barrel is heating up after a few shots, but only the accuracy you get with that one coldbore shot.
Keep it going now!! ❤❤
Thanks
The main takeaway here is finding new creative ways to talk my wife into letting me buy new rifles.
VX-6 HD 2-12x42
Get the glass it deserves !
That 2x is super handy for closer & wooded shooting... Especially if you were ever thinking of going after a big bear or something...
12x is enough to shoot a whitetail or muley let alone an elk @ 400 yards...
More magnification is great, but losing the low end really takes away from the versatility.
2-12 is the way to go
Plus, generally speaking lower power = lower weight... The mark 5 deluxe is already not the skinniest kid on the block. So it might be a good thing to keep it under 10.5 - 11 pounds
8.25lbs bare unloaded... Say 8.5 loaded
Scope is 1.25lbs say rings are say 0.25lbs
That's 10lbs (which isn't the worst thing considering you got yourself a .33 cal ''super" magnum.
Congratulations on Meeting Your Weight Loss Goal - Don't Stop Now!🥳 Just Make Sure You Get a Scope With Lots of Eye Relief! 🤕
For glass go big or go home, don't put cheap glass on that please 😅
Editing to say that the bolts on these guns are creme de la creme. Once you have owned one everything after it feels cheap and chinsy. Such a smooth and crisp operation 👌🏾
Mine was made in 2008 so I don't know if it was a Japanese or German or American made piece of steel. Either way they are almost like artwork.
I believe yours was American made
@ReloadingWeatherby yeah upon further reading it would have to have been made pre 90's to he german or Japanese made 🤣
Either way I love the mkV platform.
Yeah as far a rifles go, that's worth losing 45#. It's as nice as it gets...gorgeous.
Nice rifle. Maybe a VX-3HD 4.5-14 x 40 so you don't put much more weight on that rifle. I'd go with a BDC reticle too such as the boone & crockett.
The camera never picks up all the figure in the wood. I just got one for my birthday but in a 6.5-300. These rifles are sure beautiful. I have always thought the 340 is interesting. Cant wait to see how it shoots.
Have you shot yours yet?
@@ReloadingWeatherby Yes I have, I just tried some factory 140 grain interlocks and my rifle didnt like them. They were also going 200 FPS slower then advertised, Probably has something to do with the accuracy as most overbore cartridges shoot best near maximum pressures. Ill start loading for it in the next couple weeks
You should try and find a used gloss Leupold
😮
I want at least one safe queen.Itll probably be weatherby mark v.
Congrats on the weight loss, beautiful gun. VX 5 or VX 6
Congrats on the weight loss and the new gun. Its a beautiful gun but not my favorite caliber.
Come to Idaho bro. I'll get you a Bison.
