The Last Mission: Establishing the Rule of Law in Iraq

  • A West Virginia National Guard military police battalion helps transform the Iraqi police in Anbar province from a force that served a brutal regime to one that serves the people and the law. This is the last, and perhaps most important mission for the US Army before it leaves the country at the end of 2011.

I was with the 168th MP BN in Baghdad in 2003-04 one of our missions was to set up the first IP academy and train IPs and help set up police stations through out Baghdad. I worked with many IPs that were good men and women that just wanted to make their country a better place.

I really hate to say this, especially as an ex Marine who fought my share of wars, but not these, but if I was an average Iraqi...well no let me put it like this. If the United States was invaded because a president went rouge and held onto power using the military and became a dictator, and a foreign power came in to Liberate me and then basically destroyed everything, my home, businesses, town, powerplants, sewage plants etc. Then because I had been in the military before I was ostracized where I wasn't allowed any job etc. Then the troops kicked in my and my neighbors doors at three in the morning, holding my family at gunpoint and arresting me and people I knew as suspected bad guys, even though I and my friends weren't...well it wouldn't take me long to hate them with every fiber of my being and I would soon want to fight back. The only way I can fight them is what the world labels terrorist but to me its the only option I have to fight. I would fight them for the rest of my life even after they left, I could never forget.
We created generations of future terrorists, generations. And their reasons are valid I have to admit. Nothing justifies the way we treated them or what we did to their country and then abandoned them to the wolves. I know running away was coward Obama but still. It all just sucks and Is a HUGE blot on our honor, especially the Marines who should always maintain a far higher standard.

As an Iraqi, God bless you. I became a refugee after the invasion. The situation in Iraq has become horrible, car bombs everywhere, even on my street. Thank you for speaking up, lots of people don't realise what a mess has been created after 2003 and it confuses me so much how some people still support the invasion.
I do admit Saddam did horrible things but he also provided stability within a region full of so many opposing beliefs and ethnic groups. Thank you so much for this comment, it gives me hope, you should be running America.

As an Iraqi and former employee of the U.S. government and worked with their mission in Iraq, it’s sad to see all that effort goes away because their is still people above the law and most of the Iraqi police are corrupt and loyal to Iran and their allies
Even the Iraqi army and we are all aware of what happened after 2011 withdrawal the country collapsed and the U.S. military and its allies had to go back to help get rid of the new threat
On top of that leaving thousands of interpreters behind and committing to the moral obligation to help them out

The Iraqi Police are look much better now. I heard that their arrest rate went up because they stopped simply shooting people for petty crimes. Now they actually understand use of force and have made plenty of arrests. Recently the IP arrested a kidnapper, chased him in their police trucks and the guy finally gave up and pulled over and the IP boxed his car in with their trucks, pulled him out, handcuffed him, and now he's currently in prison and the girl he tried to kidnap is back at home safely. My only recommendation now is to set entry level requirements. Many Iraqi Police still do drugs even with their supervisors cracking down on them. The Iraqi government should require that their policemen take drug tests and complete a written test on the use of force and firearm safety to decrease corruption and improve the efficiency of police work. Terminate employment of all drug using policemen, and don't hire people who can't pass a questionnaire with common sense firearm safety and use of force questions. By doing that, they'll weed out the rotten apples and have a descent team of good policemen.
