It's great that this video brought back happy memories for you Frank. According to more recent videos and other reports the Hershey unfortunately is just a tiny shadow of its former self and its days as a useful form of transport seem to be over. It might be best to just remember it as it was. My days for overseas travel are now over.

My understanding is 3018-3021 were converted to electric power from ex-Illinois Central 80 foot heavyweight coaches just after WWII. I have nothing to go but memories of reading and article about the Hershey roster in a mid-80's copy of "Headlights", a former railfan magazine. One thing about the tropics is that everything will get overgrown with luxuriant vegetation unless there are people out there every day pulling it up. The trackwork may be perfectly good under all the overgrowth but it looks like no one has touched the track in decades. It's just a fact of life there and people deal with it the best they can.

If you scroll down a few comments earlier you will see that these cars were ex Illinois Central trailers. Don’t miss the other 5 videos in this series. They all cover different areas of the line, and aspects of the operation.

I wondered if you'd have any problems with the police. I was in Yugoslavia just before the break up began and was taking photos of the trains in the part that's now Croatia. I was taken to the police station and made to empty my pockets since they apparently were looking for spy stuff. I was a deputy sheriff at the time and always carried my badge and ID in my wallet. The police captain saw it and pointed to the word "Sheriff" on the badge. He spoke a little English and wanted to know if that was me. When I said yes, he then wanted to know if I knew John Wayne. I hemmed and hawed a bit, and he then started doing John Wayne imitations. Everything ended well. He gave me a letter that, when I showed it to police who stopped me after that, couldn't have been nicer. It was in Serbo-Croatian so I had no idea what it said. When I showed it to someone that also spoke English, it said I was the sheriff of the United States, a personal friend of John Wayne, and I could take any photos I wanted. You just never know how things will turn out. :-)
