    This episode was phenomenal! Best of the RTD 2 era in my opinion. I forgot that when Stephen Moffat isn’t writing his own long-form story, which he’s kind of bad at, when he’s just writing episodic one-offs, he’s a fantastic writer. This is some of the most Doctor Who-esque dialogue we’ve ever had. It was filled with so much tension. My shoulders still hurt. And it was filled with all of Moffat’s classics: religious soldiers, evil robots, faltering tech. And it finally felt like Ruby had a defining moment as a companion in defying the Doctor by handing him the casket and not tossing it. I also loved the inclusion of the “Skye Boat Song.” Does anyone know what the Doctor was saying about the dead president and his wife? Was he quoting something or is that another clue to this season’s mystery box?

      Personally disagree with your assessment that this is the only good thing to come out of RTD's new era so far (seriously Wild Blue Yonder was a masterclass in the bizarre but potent type of horror that Doctor Who excels at capturing) but I will agree that this is indeed Fifteen's best episode thus far. More than made up for The Devil's Chord imo (wasn't awful but imo it was a bit of a letdown and the Beatles felt like they were an afterthought)

    Moffat's work got me into this show, and in turn gave me everything I got out of it. It was the thing that helped me gain an appreciation for sci fi the art of scoring a scene, acting, and embracing geekdom. He was behind the seasons of television that comforted me at my darkest hour. Now he's gotten me to revisit this show and reflect on who I've been. Fir that, he'll always be one of my favorite writers.

It actually took me a while to get to grips with it and I initially thought it was just going to be mostly about the landmine. But this is a Moffat story. I should have known better. It was amazing and there was so many incredible lines. I do wish though that the little girl had been allowed to have emotions- Moffat has done this many times of putting his characters through huge trauma and then not letting them grieve. I don't mean the 'he's not gone' line, that was beautiful. I just mean.. she didn't shed a single tear. The female soldier got to cry. This little girl barely acknowledged that her father, the only person she had left in the whole universe, had suddenly died. Those moments irk me so much. BUT it doesn't spoil the rest of the episode, which was 90% of it very very good. Will be one I watch again and again. (And try not to get frustrated at again and again lol)

      @RR4711 Před 24 dny +3

      The little girl really believes in her “faith” so she has no reason to be sad but the soldier woman was beginning to doubt her faith hence her emotions. They may have subtly tried to show the danger of believing nothing matters in life because dying is a good thing if you believe you go to a better place. There are real life cults that have some very sick ideas about life and death. Some Christian religions really do teach that someone dies because god wants another angel in heaven (there is no biblical basis for this).
