- A test ride and review of the Moto Guzzi V85TT, a middle weight adventure bike with a difference. Released in 2019 and updated for 2021, the V85TT is Moto Guzzi's take on an adventure bike.
In competition with the Triumph Tiger 900, BMW GS850 and Suzuki V-Strom 650. In traditional Moto Guzzi style, the V85TT is no ordinary adventure bike. With an air cooled V Twin and exotic design, the V85TT rides very differently to a traditional adventure bike.

I am a V85TT owner myself and I am completely satisfied. I have been with her on long journeys through Europe. The power of the engine is perfectly sufficient and on the off-road trails I could always easily control it. I have a lot of fun with her and for me she is fantastically beautiful.

I really want one of these bikes. I have heard people say that it is a modernized BMW R100 GS. That is a very good thing.
Let's also remember what it does NOT have: No radiator, no coolant, no water pump, no hoses, no hose clamps. Less weight, fewer parts, simplified maintenance. Maybe moderate horsepower motorcycles are like a tube amplifiers: it is better to have a lower wattage that you use more of, than a higher wattage amp that rarely just turned up.
I am a guzzi rider myself. After owned all brands of bikes through the years, I got catches completely by Moto Guzzi. Quite simple, you like a guzzi or you don’t. It has a character of it’s own.
If you ride an older guzzi, you might come into technics by doing maintenance yourself (which I started to like). Guzzi’s always bring you home 😉. For me it became much more of a traveling pall than my other bikes.
Absolutely, very much a marmite bike! Yes great for DIY work etc... which is brilliant for learning more about a bike, which is hard to do on most modern bikes.

I thought I absolutely knew how to ride a bike. A rude ‘wake up moment’ when I dived deep(er) into the wider knowledge of bike technology. It is fundamentally important to understand what is happening inside the engine, with the frame, gearbox etc. Especially when you ride a guzzi, it is quite important that you understand what is happening between the clutch and back wheel to chose the right revs in combination with the appropriate gear. A guzzi might be a bit unforgiving if you choose wrong. Riding a bike is quite different than transport yourself in a car.
I ride a 2020 adventure and it is everything a bmw is and everything it's not. It's a stable comfortable ride that is great for commuting and loves the back roads and twisty roads. Its simple and easy to ride and work on. Great bike for the older rider that doesn't need 135 hp. V85TT is my forever bike. It is agricultural and simple, doesn't have lots of plastic and electronics. My Bella Rose loves to get dirty and I don't have to polish her. Every time I ride I smile ear to ear. V85TT is a middle weight winner like no other. Ride safe Ride free friend.

As a 40 year rider, this bike is my best purchase ever. My last 3 bikes were all between 110-160 hp, yet I wonder why I ever needed it after buying the Guzzi. Being able to flat foot it is huge for me, at 5 foot 9 . I am installing 50/50 tires this winter, as I have been thrashing it about on trails as much as the stock rubber allows. A major change after 2020, The 2021 and up V85tt has tubeless spoked rims, and a different tune on the engine. They had teething pains such as overfilling of the shaft lube, an easy fix, but most have been solid. The new verions also have 5 riding modes as well. The best thing?....seeing people walk by superbikes and halo adv bikes, in order to take pics and ask questions about the "Little Guzzi That Could"......
I feel like the character from the Guzzi's makes up for the loss in power! Also as you say a nice sized adventure bike as well, not too tall for us normal sized folk.
Yes like the tubeless spoked rims, useful addition and look great as well. Completely agree, it is such a unique looking bike. Superbikes get boring after a while, always nice to have something different.

I have had young kids on their sport bikes stop in my driveway and ask to take pictures of my Travel. In the U.S. the Travel came with the side cases with the top case as an option.
I own a 20 year old BMW with almost the exact horsepower and torque specs as the V85. It is absolutely enough power for anything you need unless you are going to the track, or have a death wish or a desire to go to prison. It is all the usable power you need.
“Adventuring in style” sums it up. Great looking, mechanical, somewhat heavy, comfortable, all characteristics of bikes that appeal to me. I’m done tearing up the road, I just ride and like a little heavier, planted bike. 👍 time to brave the colder weather, take a ride and lift my spirits as well !
👍 It is such a unique design, especially for an adventure bike! Perfect for not ripping up the road, you don't have to go fast on this bike to feel its character. Can be daunting to get out in the winter, but (especially when its cold) I find I always feel better afterwards. Also find it improves my riding skills.

I have a 21 Travel and I've covered 7000 miles so far, it's the least powerful bike I've ever owned but the most fun to ride. It has multiple ride modes but I've left it in Sport mode from day one and it's great fun in the twisties and country roads. It's a great bike.
I think the character more than makes up for any loss in power 👍 Not the most refined bike in the segment, but that is part of its charm. You don't always need speed to feel alive!

To me is a beautiful bike, it looks like the adventure bikes should look. No plastic panels and lots of electronics like others.
👍 love the bold looks Moto Guzzi have gone for with this bike, really stands out from the crowd. There is something very "solid" about the build quality which feels great on an adventure bike.
What you perceive as the gas tank is actually two large plastic panels covering the real tank. Side panels are plastic as well.
Another great review Angus. I think you summed up the whole Guzzi ‘vibe’ quite comprehensively. I have ridden a lot of Guzzis over the years and have come to this conclusion; I would love one if I had a motorcycle collection but wouldn’t want to ride one on a daily basis.

I've ridden many other bike brands but when I rode my first Moto Guzzi I fell for it's charm. I didn't end up buying one until the V85tt as the V7 and V9 were underpowered at the time (older model with smaller engine). The V85tt was so comfortable, looks great and a joy to ride that I bought one. Easy to work on yourself as well. It's a small SUV of the bike world with a do it all mentality. A year later I rode a Tuono 660 and fell in love again with the sport bike world and is my favorite sporty bike after owning and riding many other sports bikes. So Comfy and such a joy to ride. People don't need a v4 Tuono as the 660 is more than enough and less money but still has all the cool tech stuff. I've made a few of my own videos for fun on both bikes just to talk about the upgrades that were worth it to me.
Moto Guzzi's really do have such a unique charm and riding experience 👍 Some fall inb love with it and some are put off. I can definitely see the appeal.
I personally find this V85TT even more unique than other models from Guzzi, as you say great for diy and learning about the bike etc...
I really want to ride the Tuono 660, love the engine.

A very enjoyable review. I've always wanted a Guzzi. I'm 66 so it's been a long wait. But I have just bought a new Centenario model v85tt. One of the last ones as it is a 2021/2 model. I haven't picked it up yet but hopefully next week. I'm in Greece so we have lots of great twisty mountain roads here in Pelion.

I bought a V85TT back in the summer - loved it's Guzzi charisma but decided I just couldn't live with it's agricultural engine which is strangled by poor fuelling to get it through Euro 5 - RedAng's review and comments are spot-on - it has a charm of it's own, well built quality bike and it's great that one is riding an adventure bike that isn't a GS !
I endured / moderately enjoyed a couple of thousand miles, and fitted a booster plug, K & N air filter and a less restrictive silencer to help with the poor fuelling and the bike was riding better as the miles increased - I decided that the V85TT was not for me long-term, so I sold it on and lost a lot of money !!

You've really sold this bike to me. I like bikes that feel agricultural and where you can feel stuff going on underneath you. I'm amazed that they've managed to get an air-cooled V-twin to pass Euro 5. I want one!

Excellent review, this video just popped up again after about a year since watching it, I remember thinking I will go and have a look at one, All Bikes Rochdale Guzzi dealer and bought one. Took it on a Mega Mondo with Austin Vince through the Pyrenees, all completely off road with some serious sections, open it right up and hope for the best ! The suspension is limited and the side stand switch got smashed off, but luckily with tape and zip ties it was ok. A breather pipe got crushed and was an easy fix. Thinking about a big KTM....but ordered Ohlins rear shock, Italian fancy front fork things, new exhaust system and some electrical plug in job. In short, this is a weird looking bike, engine is so much fun, I have really leathered this and its not missed a trick, best sounding bike ive heard for years.

I have never ridden a MG but there is a dealer in town and I’ve stopped by and looked them over before I even knew what they were. I’m adding a second bike later this year to the current ‘21 HD softail and even with all the options out there, I just can’t shake these Guzzi’s. They look amazing to me! This adv option has really peaked my interest. So far, it’s at the top of the list based simply on looks and character. Can’t wait to ride one!

Nice review, but I'm a bit biased owning a 2019 V85TT.
I've put some serious knobbies, crashbars and barkbusters on it and live riding it through the woods, mud and sand.
Great bike, totally stand out every where i take it. Not the best in anything but good enough to live with, heaps of character and great looks.

As you know, I'm a bit of a Bonneville fangirl BUT Italian design is growing on me more and more and Moto Guzzi is becoming a dream, characterful bike for me. Your comments are really informative. I think this bike in these colours looks delicious and that's the first "adventure" bike I've felt like that about. It looks like a brilliant ride all the time bike and one day, I'll try one.
Sorry for long comment but I'm so excited. I have ordered my first scooter (still two wheels) and after careful thought, decided to get a 50cc straightaway. Won't have to worry about speed limits and will control my hoon factor while I learn my craft 😄
It is a really cool looking bike and adopts the classic/retro style but designed into an adventure bike! Very cool. It definitely has its faults dynamically, but a very unique and involving bike.

Good-looking bike. Love the air-cooled, transversely mounted V-twin. Interesting they now have cross-spoke wheels. I like the mechanical feel of it. Utilitarian bikes appeal to me. The weight should aid stability. I like the big double headlights. Shorter screens are better.

By the flower pot pub know it well, I'm collecting my 2019 red&white one this week after having 44yrs of riding all sorts of bikes from ts 185, Maico 440, fireblades Harleys ktm 990, btw 1200gs, triumph tiger 800 etc.. wanted something with character looks different easy maintenance shaft drive. Love it.

Traded my BMW F850GS for an MG V85TT. 6 gallon tank, shaft drive and a low CG did it for me. The lower rpm torque was an added bonus. Wish BMW made a R850GSA but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I loved the look of the lakeside venue at the beginning of the video. I like Guzzis but there's always been a question of reliability hanging over them. The double z is pronounced as in Pizza. Once again cheers for the top class entertainment.

I have the v7 850 Special and find cruising at 85 with sprints to 90 and above is no problem at all!

Good review thank you; I purchased a 2022 V85TT as well as a 2021 V7 850. I like them both but the V85TT gives me a more confidence inspiring ride although a bit taller for my 5‘7” height; had dealer install hyperpro 1 inch suspension lowering kit and removed the bumpers under the seat and it seems to be bearable now you only notice it when moving it around in the garage or stationary positions

Damn I have the same, 22 v85 tt travel, 21 v7 850 special.
This bike is somehow intriguing. I think I will try it, one of this days. The problem with this not so popular bikes, because they are uncommon, is the reliability of it as a whole. I saw videos of people saying that they had difficulties with technical assistance to their bikes. And sharing problems with brand new bikes, like leaks of oil from the shaft drive, electronic issues not promptly solved by the Dealership…It’s nice to have something different from the majority but at the same time is critical to know what are your chances of having a healthy bike that doesn’t turn itself into a nightmare for you. At the end of the day you need to know that your money was well spent and you only get that if the bike and the dealership are reliable. If I lived in Italy near to the manufacturer’s facilities, maybe I would buy one.
Thanks for the bike impressions video, more or less you confirmed the mainstream experience and opinions about this bike. Living with one, can lead to a different conclusion. Although it seems a nice relaxed and non intimidating ride, with capabilities for some soft off-road trails and maybe is possible to do some weekend short touring escapades , if it shows reliable enough for that kind of use. The thing that we have to discover is if we identify ourselves with the type of ride it offers. But that’s a matter common to all bikes, if you don’t identify with the general aspects of the machine, it isn’t worth it.
It certainly is an intriguing bike to ride, very different from its competition! I like the design and the characterful engine, but yes I can see that there may be some reliability issues that crop up. It definitely has a certain appeal, if you like that style of bike then you will love it. If not then its is not the most refined ride!
All about what you are after, for long distance touring I would look else where personally.
I really like the looks and have always hankered after a Guzzi V twin since my Lancaster days back in the late 70’s. It’s a bike, not a hairdryer.
They are great old school and simple bikes, I think that is some of their appeal 👍 Such a different riding experience to it's competition. I towel dry 😂

MayI suggest a bit of reading... Hence knowledge of adjustable shift lights and heated gripsand O M G shaft drive.. I live in Texas and have no trouble mile crunching at 85 and 90 with panniers. Valve adjust is a 1.5 hr job so D I Y yes! I love mine and am a 37 yr. veteran of 5 different makes (Yamaha, Kawasaki, Harley and another Guzzi v65sp. I enjoyed the good and bad of I have had and this one is my Favorite.

They are great bikes, but yes for sure an acquired taste! Love the design they have done with the V85TT, especially for an adventure bike.
I just bought a 2023 and I love everything about the bike but the Guzzi produces a prodigious amount of heat. Todays high (Late October in coastal Georgia USA) was 75F (24C) and I was getting hot on the bike. My legs were very warm and I had to splay them out to get some cooling on my summer mesh pants. It's going to be great for highway and spring, winter, fall riding but I'll probably be riding my much cooler thumper in the heat.
Yes to be fair I didn't notice the heat too much in the UK! However I can imagine it could get warm.
I suppose it is a trade off for having such a unique looking bike. No bike is perfect at the end of the day. Cheers
Actually as far as looks go on the Guzzi I like it and that colour is nice too I would have one in my garage if I could for sure for those less than favorable weather days . Don't know much about the reliability of these bike have ridden many year ago but never owned one .👍good one

Good video again, like the look of the bike but not keen on the colour, old school feeling but modern with it, if that makes sense. About the throttle response, as with lots of modern bikes it's due to the emissions that manufacturers have to comply to, a good remap on a dyno would sort that. Keep up the good work. 👍

A different type of adventure bike 👍
So would like one of these but they are not diy. Stunning in those colours. I had a 1997 bmw r1100r 80bhp really was perfect power balance. Split a brake pipe and couldn’t bleed them had to take to a shop. The vlogs on these bikes and ownership have woes.. puts me off. Head over heart. Thankyu for this
These bikes are incredibly easy to work on yourself. Oil change, filter changes, even the angle of the cylinders means they are easily accessible for adjusting valve clearances etc.
@@willlodge5386 agreed but they aren’t things go wrong that I’ve seen on here all electrical faults. I have an engineering background with mediocre ability, but italian bikes cars still not for me

@@volt8684 not found anything with electrical faults mainly oil pressure sensor and over filled shaft drive and under filled gearbox oil both from factory. The owners page is pretty much problem free with one guy doing 42,000 mile without issue.
I ride a Suzuki DL 1050 XT now , but i realy like this Guzzi V85 tt . I'm realy thinking about changing from Suzuki to Guzzi . I like the looks and also the Guzzi V-twin and for me the Guzzi has power enough .

The shift lights are set for low rpm break in period and are owner adjustable...... There is quite a bit of unused power available if you shift a couple thousand revs higher.

Current Guzzis have their 'change gear' lights set for running-in revs. They're easy to set to whatever you want (although 6800 rpm or thereabouts is recommended) once past the first service. How did you like this versus the V7 you tested? (I ask as a short-legged V7 owner).
👍 Yes this is true, the dealership told me once I had got back from the ride!! The rev lights where set intentionally to a low rev gear change (can be adjusted). Too be honest I think I prefer the V7 over this bike. Just personally feel like the retro style suits a smaller naked bike better. This would be a great adventure bike for the smaller person though! Thanks was going to post the same thing. The bike in the video had done over 1600 miles so was surprised the dealer hadn’t adjusted for this after it’s first service at 900 miles. Although as a demo I appreciate they don’t want people thrashing it too much…

Just got rid of one as it spent more time in the garage getting fixed than on the road. When it does go it's great but try telling that to Piaggio.
That is a shame! It is a special bike, but not being reliable is not a great trait for an adventure bike.

@@JIMWSMITH Latterly my bike was at the dealership for a month after repeated calls to them they advised me to mail piaggio as they had run out of ideas as to why since February the bike would stall at less than 2,000 rpm.
This being mid October and the bike had been in twice already "repaired" along with servicing at 16000 I think?
It was a year old in february, an ex display with 600 miles from new and started stalling around 16,000miles and when exchanged 21000 . so I spent 5000 miles hard on throttle often in heavy traffic and a 3 year hire purchase left.
After 10 months the gear linkage was replaced as it wouldn't change gear. It was a commute bike and winter rides had seized up the linkage from the shifter.
I had the garage phone and told me they would try changing the throttle body and it was £500. If it didn't work they wouldn't charge me labour.??
Shortly after maybe a week they swapped an rht cable which seemed to work. So that being replaced for a new one at £170 and 8 hours labour £500 I finally got shot of my motto guzzi experience and realize why all the sniggers when studying during my motorcycle course in the early 90's.
Waiting on Registration stickers of my 2021 Centenario. Loaded with accessories and only 1706 miles. Nothing, not even broken in.

It's a bit of a unique bike so I like that it has a unique look. I don't like the dash though; the TFT segment looks too small for the housing, and do you think the aircooled engine would give off a lot of heat in the summer?
It is certainly a different looking bike 👍 Yes I agree the dash does look a bit busy! I think dual analogue dials would have been great. Being air cooled it is likely to get hotter, I shouldn't think it would get too bad. Being transversely mounted the cylinders get nice amount of air flow to cool them down.
My right heel gets a bit warmer than I would like in slow moving and stop and go traffic from the catalytic converter. But the heat from the cylinder heads is not too bad until you are over 95F. The cylinder heads do protect the inside of your legs from light rain though!
Definitely different from the run of the mill modern bikes.. lol... you just said run of the mill.. we are all connected!

You forgot to mention the shaft drive and I was wondering how a pannier will fit on the left side with that big muffler.......Sal : )
Apologies, that is a major point to mention! I personally think a big benefit. The left hand pannier will have a cut out in it to make room for the exhaust, resulting in less capacity in the left pannier.
Definitely a smaller pannier.. My helmet is a 3XL and will only fit in the right hand bag. Not the top box or left side. Everything else like my airbag vest goes in the left side.
I really want one of these but just think it will be a bit underpowered and the ground clearance concerns me. I've read most of the reviews and know they are probably both non-issues but I could get a 4 year old Triumph Explorer for the same money, downside a lot heavier..
Yes they have a great appeal, being so different from the competition. But you make valid points, I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for!

My wife loves going on the back of mine. Very comfortable and a good pillion option imo.
Many bike manufacturers are missing the mark with their design of the new digital displays. On this one, you have a nice, large area, and then Guzzi uses only a small rectangular area in the middle of the screen. Would it really be that much harder or more expensive to use the whole screen and pack in more info and larger characters? I've noticed this on my Benelli and other bikes as well.
Yes I know what you mean! It is very frustrating. I think it must cost save and also possibly make the screen better quality and reliable perhaps.
This and the xcape 650 and Tenere are lovely! Only one I'd really take proper off roading the "Italians" are more road bikes.
P.s Would love to see you review an Xcape 650.
I had the XCape lined up a few weeks ago, but fell through unfortunately. Will try again! I agree I don't think the V85TT is really meant for any real off roading, too heavy etc...

The motorheads in Mandello del Lario expect their buyers to read the owner's manual. Those warning flashes are simply a reminder to the owner that Guzzis (goot-sees) need a bit of breaking in. This is a "macchina" that you need to spend some time with and get to know. It requires some commitment on your part . . . a strange concept to most people in the 21st century. Fortunately for Moto Guzzi, their low production numbers allow them to cater to the small number of people who understand exactly what they're trying to do . . . they call themselves Guzzistas!
👍 yes also I think the rev lights can be changed to allow for higher revs before the lights come on.
@@redangrevival Correct. They are changed by the dealer at the first service interval, and can also be changed by the owner. We really do live in a fun time for motorbike riding. Imagine having an "old school" bike like this in your garage, parked right next to a Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX! Talk about different experiences! However, it's very likely that by the end of this century the fossil fuel era will be over, and they will both be either parked in a museum, or junked/recycled . . . time marches on!
You can feel the added 2-3 Nm of torque? You will need a good quality torque wrench stored at right temperature, moisture and atmospheric pressure to make that exact reading.
2 Nm is the power that brings a Honda CB 50 up to 50 km/h.......so you can feel it definitly.
Not transverse mounted engine. All you guys keep repeating this rubbish. Take the time to learn how this is defined: the crankshaft rotation on the Guzzi V is in line/parallel with the wheelbase/direction of travel, therefore this is by definition a longitudanally mounted engine. The Ducati V2/V4, Harley/Indian V-twin, are transversely mounted engines by definition as their crank rotation is perpendicular to direction of travel.
I take your point sir and apologies for my naivety! You are correct of course and I always endeavour to learn more as I ride. A common misconception with these engines, I can see why the mistake is s easily made. I now know it is the direction the crank shaft is facing not the engine that describes how it is mounted.

I don't have a Guzzi, but always admired their interpretation of the product and am actually looking to get one after over 38 years riding only Ducati sport bikes, so yes I like things the Italian way. The Guzzi approach to things also has many practical advantages: shaft drive-big advantage when it comes to adventure or any type of riding and touring in all kinds of weather. You can easily do your own maintenance on these bikes, with easily accessible fluid changes and valve checks easily done with the cylinders thus exposed. Don't even have to take the fuel tank off to checks the valves. Also I like that Guzzi tries hard to keep things simple without heaps of really stupid electronics aids and complex systems.

Yes I suppose great bikes to learn the engineering side of motorcycles with. All I would say is you may miss some power coming from Ducati to Guzzi!!
@@jdesmo1 I bought my V85 , after trading in my Multistrada,I wasn,t sure I could live with the downgrade in power, now I wonder why I ever needed 160 hp. Maintenance is a dream compared to anything I have owned in the last several decades, and at 5 foot 10, I can flat foot it, unlike any other bike in the segment.

Same price as the Tenere 700 world raid which is a better bike in every way off road.
Do 500 miles on asphalt on a Tenere....you will wish for death.
I have owned both and have spent most of my life in the Motorcycle industry. Me like a lot of people in the industry think the T7 is the most over rated and at its selling price over priced bike in the industry. A true dual sport bike is much better off road than a T7 and almost as good on road, also the lack of any aids and tech make it literally terrible on a long road ride. Furthermore the bike is extremely top heavy and that makes if feel heavier than bikes that are as much as 50 pounds heavier. Like always happens in the industry the hype will die and the shiny will fade, if not for the Covid shortages that would have already happened.
So, from what I can see the engine is basically a shrugged version of BMW's Boxer? same transvers layout, same shaft driven, even the starting has the same side shakes as R1250GS
It definitely does have a similar feel to it. To be fair to Moto Guzzi they have been making these engines for a while now!

Likes to ride it, but it has some odd things about it, nothing serious though*. But it's a guy who dressed up for a little more than what he was wearing. Can imagine buying a new one, want tubeless wheels, have a -20.
I've "tormented" it a bit on rather strange "roads", mostly dirt roads, but sometimes.... It's been going well, so far.
