  • The Heavy Camel Rider (called Heavy Camel before the Definitive Edition) is a cavalry unit in Age of Empires II that can be trained at the Stable once the Imperial Age is reached. It excels at battling other cavalry, but is rather ineffective otherwise. Every civilization that has access to Camel Riders except for the Cumans can upgrade them to Heavy Camel Riders, but the upgrade to the Imperial Camel Rider is unique to the Hindustanis.
Armor: Frontier Guards (+4/+0, Gurjaras only)
Gurjaras: Heavy Camel Riders deal +50% bonus damage.
Train cost: Kshatriyas (-25% food, Gurjaras only)

Dravidians - Seize control of the lucrative Indian Ocean trade routes and utilize advanced metallurgy as you build one of the wealthiest sea empires of medieval Asia. The Dravidian unique units are the Urumi Swordsman, a warrior wielding a scathing flexible sword, and the Thirisadai, a massive vessel that dominates the high seas.
Gurjaras - Ride swift mounts across the fertile fields and open plains of western India and unleash diverse armies of sturdy warriors upon your enemies. The Gurjara unique units are the Shrivamsha Rider, a speedy cavalry unit that can dodge enemy attacks, and the Chakram Thrower, an infantry unit that unleashes volleys of deadly metal discs.

The final battle of Gurjara Heavy Camel Rider vs Hindustani Imperial Camel Rider was so close than i expected

That 50% damage bonus on cavalry definitely has a big impact, especially on Cataphract…

The best part about experiencing the Gujaras is that they are a DLC Civ that everyone can play for free since they are the civ that replaces the Hindustanis in the Prithviraj campaign.
Watching the upgraded Heavy Camels defeat the Elite War Elephants was such a joy considering that Elite War Elephants are an enemy unit that's faced off in Prithviraj 4 (Fate of India). All those crazy bonuses are helping them here: Cheaper cost thanks to the castle age unique tech, the 50% more attack bonus from the Civ bonus, and of course Frontier Guards (Imp age unique tech) giving them extra melee armor.

Well, fate of india is just a cheesy scenario, just rush your army and trebs towards each base, you dont have time and resources for anything else.

That extra bonus damage turned around the match-up with cataphracts.
In teamgames(catas are too expensive in 1v1s), byzantines instead of taking the fight with camels, should run when they see gurjaras.

They kinda suck against everything that isn’t cavalry but they absolutely melt any cav units
Even being able to take down war elephants is really impressive

They are like the Incan slingers, destroy infantry but get destroyed by all else. Just like how the slinger rely on Eagles and Kamayuks, similarly as Gurjaras you have to add in chakram throwers to counter infantry and Srivamsha riders for archers. A Gurjara army of Camels backed with chakrams and Srivamsha riders ready to pounce into the enemy economy is a scary sight and a traumatic experience. Trust me, I experienced this not too long ago. They are even more OP then Incas in terms of strong counter units

Heavy Camel riders: Demolish Cataphracts and other notorious cavalry units
Also Heavy Camel riders: Nearly lose in melee vs brit longbowmen

They are the ultimate counter-cav civ, everything is aimed towards that goal, their camels just wins.
I was, however, expecting the unique tech to help them a bit more against melee units, 4+ is a lot.

      Don't think so.
Pretty sure they lose h2h even adjusted for cost, also worse against other cavs when adjusted for cost.
Though, they are still excellent, of course.

@@et34t34fdf They got full upgrades so no. They are still probably best camels apart of Hindustanis and gurjaras. None else can match that discount. Not even byzantines trash camels.
