The first time I watched this ad when it played before my video, I completely loved it. The second time as well I did not want to press the skip button. Third time in span of 10 minutes it played again and I was a little tired. When I saw it almost 10 times in span of half hour (I was watching short clips) I started hating it completely.SK- ll you are a luxury brand, dont force yourself upon people, follow what youtube advises, that an ad should not be shown to the same person more than 2-3 times a week or it will start having a negative impact. Excellent ad, terrible digital strategy.
This is by far the best advertisement I've have ever seen! I absolutely fell in love with it the moment I started watching it! Misa Kuranga is an inspiration to me as I'm a ballerina myself too! Thank you for making such an amazing and inspiration film Sk-ll ❤️
After a year, still look up for this commercial from time to time, to find strength in myself, and try to pass inner strength to other. Thank you for the beautiful story.
I have been dancing ballet since I was 3 and now I am 14, till today I have never gave up on dancing despite being overweight.. Even though some of my school mates make fun of me but Dancing is what I am. I have always been told that ballet is very boring, Ballet is a beautiful piece of art, it is just the perspective of it being boring or interesting. Never Give Up on your Dreams. :)
My 7yr old girl just got distinction in an international dancing exam. Her body was stiff and legs not flexible. The teacher warned that she might consider to quit as she might not have the potential. My girl wanted to give up too. I showered her this video, explaining to her the story of this beautiful lady. She loved it, and understood the deep meaning behind it vaguely though. And she practiced hard, working on every little small movement. And she become 1of the 3 best Dancers in her class! Thank you for the inspiration for an ordinary person!! We will continue to fight !
I absolutely loved it! I never liked commercials on youtube, but this was just to beautiful to press the skip button. Watched it over and over again, and still loved it. Thank you for creating this!
I love this ad. First time I did not press skip on an ad video. Kudos to the advertising team and I really like this. I feel it really does have the essence of SKII. Good job.
I honestly cried while looking this video. it really inspired me as the woman not to look at the DNA. thank u for SK-II to remind me to have strongest in my life. I think your commercial is not only succeed on promoting something but also inspiring woman in all over the world.
this impressed me so much. I'm Japanese as well and sometimes feel inferior to other European classmates but this encouraged me very hard to believe my abilities.
Thank you for watching. The music, entitled "Ballerina," is actually an original composition made especially for the film by Lennert Busch, who is based in London. Glad you liked it!
Misa, you inspire me so much. I don’t have a stereotypical ballet body and constantly find myself feeling down on myself because of it. But it’s because of you and other ballerinas breaking that stereotype that inspires me to keep on pushing and as long as I work hard and believe in myself I can do it! 💖💖💖
My students won't get around missing this for their next Introduction to Advertising class. There is a lot of competition for good creative in the industry, but this one definitely caught my attention. Nicely done and congratulations also on the fabulous composition! #viral #advertising #SKII #rolemodel
She's just inspired me.. I'm also trying to overcome my limits.. My own height is almost the same with her, I'm also an Asian.. It's a natural thoughts from asian Ballerina that we have too short legs.. The point that she said is how can we overcome, not how do we look or how is our posture..
I personally thinks this is a good ad. I think I got the message behind it. Others may see this as racist or stereotypical, but firstly, from an advertising viewpoint, it grabs attention. I don't usually watch those skip-able ads in youtube but I stayed to look at it till the very end, and I am very touched when she came out from the curtains to dance, along with the lines "my dna dictates I shouldn't listen to those little dictators". I know nothing about ballet, and I have no idea if those lines are her personal experience, but I think I can relate the product to the ad. Many Asians share common features, and they are different from Caucasians. Yet, we (yes, I'm Asian as well, so feel free to say my comment is biased) idolize some Westerners, to the point we sometimes want to imitate their looks, and to be precise, make-up style. But some of them are just impossible. For an example, how do you imitate those smokey eyes while your eyelids fold back inside (Not all asians have monolids but this has a point) and hide all your eye shadow? How do you imitate those sculpted look with face contouring while you in contrast have rounded baby face with typically high cheekbones? This ad is basically saying, "you can be beautiful the way you are, in the Asian way, with our products" and I respect it for that. Get your minds working.
I remember when I was watching this when I was just 8 years old. It inspired me so much to become a ballet dancer. But, I didn't know back then how much effort and persistence it takes to be one. And, in the end I didn't continue my ballet classes. I started a little late for ballet, many people are 3 or 4 years old and I was the oldest in class. I guess it was just a child's dream after all, to look graceful on that stage. Though I'm 15 now I still don't know what I should do with my life, well it's definitely not ballet since it's rather hard to catch up at this age...... and the amount of effort wasn't very fit for me
This video inspired me to do ballet as a child. But the dream is gone. With all the money you gotta spend for lessons just to keep going and reaching new heights....my parents couldn't let me continue....and at one point it was just a child's dream
There are a shift of gender roles in the video as ballet dancers is considered to be recreational activities for most asian people. Now, Ms. Misa Kuranaga managed to break the convention and made it a full time career, kudos! - SKII official
This is remarkably similar to Under Armour's Misty Copeland ad, released last year: voiceover, inspiring, uplifting music, tone of copy....while it's a beautiful ad, it would be hard to call this original...
If this ad looks very racist to you, you may forget the fact that the ballet is originally the "White" culture. It emerged in France and the famous French king Louis XIV promoted, and later, it was developed in Russia into the current style. In most of the performances, the main characters were White, that means, the Asian dancers shouldn't let the audience find they have too much Asian features to be the White characters. Ballet is not just a gymnastics, but also a theatre, so in fact, many Japanese dancers achieved the principal level of famous companies like Royal ballet in London, and their physical abilities were extremely high, which made their techniques incredibly remarkable, but they were suffering from their ethnic body features at the same time. Japan has some traditional performing arts like Kabuki or Nou, and if a white person try to join that as a performer, it would be really hard regardless of his/her skills.
The content of this CM narration reminds me of very similar sentences found in "A Japanese Schoolgirl" by Yoko Kajihara. Her book was funnier and more acerbic, though.
I had to come here to watch the video, turn on the subtitle to realised she she was saying when she said "DNA".....i thought she said....my "dear Nate"......or something......
Thank you for watching. The music, entitled "Ballerina," is actually an original composition made especially for the film by Lennert Busch, who is based in London.
Hi Serena, thanks for watching! The song, entitled "Ballerina," is actually original music made especially for the film by Lennert Busch, a London-based composer.

"I'll see the world through brown colored eyes", at least that's what I heard :)
You know guys i think this ad is too rude and too direct. Directly shows inferiority complex of Asian girls. Instead of making beauty of what they have they blame their DNA... Apart from the personal story of the ballerina, before that video i never thought that Asian face is too flat to show emotions... And in living in Asia! And SKII what do you offer then? To use your cosmetics to cover their DNA-based features? Poor those Asian girls who admire this ad, you probably really suffer to have Asian features.
I'm pretty sure they meant that Some of the natural body structure of that ballerina cause her to be unable to do some things people usually see in ballerinas (they are facts) but she overcomes those and is unafraid to step out and do her best. And uh no, this "poor little Asian girl" who admires the ad have never suffer to have Asian features ever in my life so far
Yeah.. this video is about the body type of a ballerina. There are certain body types, like having certain feet, that make someone an ideal choice for a ballerina... and this video is about even if you don't have perfect ballerina feet, or perfect turn out, or whatever, (which is determined by DNA) that does not mean you can't be a ballerina. Although I don't know why they had to point out her eye color.
Galina Tulovsky BelosnezhkaSnezhka It mostly discusses the body type of a stereotypical ballerina. You must have wider hips, long legs, lanky body, certain feet, etc. However, it also discusses race. It is not promoting inferiority complex. She's describing what professional ballerinas would see in her, "Oh she's Asian...she won't even be seen in the casting call." But she continues to fight. Note that the parts where she claims seeing the world with brown colored eyes and having a flat face describe her Asian ethnicity because ballerinas stereotypically are white with blue eyes, have long, pointed noses. This discusses her ethnicity. She's not ashamed of it. She says that, "Yes, DNA dictates my eye color. It dictates my facial features. But that doesn't matter because I'm going to strive to be the best me I can be." And that's the thing. No matter what your DNA says about you, you are able to achieve it, so as long as you can do it. It's actually telling people to stop making excuses that their DNA doesn't allow them to do something, rather they can do it. If anything it tells you to strive to be a better form of yourself and to work with your DNA.
kimkishineegirl I don't know if I can achieve my dream. I want to be a flight attendant but I am too small, so tiny that I cannot even reach the lowest limit in any airlines. Oh well, I listen to my DNA and do something else.
I usually never watch ads but I could not skip this one. this ad brings me into tears

wonderful advertising
I cried at this video. Love it. It is so true with every professional asian woman living in an industry dominated by white guys.
+Vironica Ee what ever.... crying that victimhood garbage
+Vironica Ee you mean 'white supremacy'. 'white males' is a totally different matter in a professional setting
She said nothing about victimhood, only that she felt empowered by the ad due to white male dominance in the workforce.
Love the ad concept💖
wonderful!
