I performed this in 2016 with a church choir in VA, and although I'm comfortable with improvisation, the choir director was not; apparently didn't want to open that box of chocolates during a live service! So I transcribed the solos from the Phoenix Chorale version, modified it a bit, & thus had a written-out solo to play from. Would have preferred to improvise, but it was more important to be able to play this incredible piece a couple of times with a great choir.
I just think the use of a saxophone on this is wonderful. Every version I have heard.

Improvisation is definitely required for this piece. About 80% is improvised.
