In 1965-1966, I was in the US Air Force, stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland. This was the song I listen to the most on my record player. Single, 24 years old and I couldn't wait to get back to the world. I had a girlfriend in Phoenix that I had to cut loose before going to Thule because I didn't want to receive a Dear John letter from her. I figured if she was still there after my one year assignment I would return to Phoenix and see if we still felt the same way. I returned to Phoenix after buying a 1966 Chevelle Malibu in Chicago, we felt the same way about each other before I went to Thule, so we got married in August 1966, had a baby boy in 1968. I still have my Malibu and my son. Thule was by far the Worst assignment I had during my 30 years in the Air Force. Thank God for the good music of the 60s, especially my homeboy, Walter Jackson and his song, Welcome Home. I love it today as much as I loved it in 1965-1966. I am 78 years old now and I still enjoy my music of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. 😆 💘

@Milton Martin...l had to respond....Born 1940, served in the USAF in Germany 1962 thru 1965. Was engaged but she couldn't wait 3 years...
Sorry your 1 year in Thule wasn't good...My 3 in Germany were great but a long time to be away from family and The World as we called it then.
Hope you're still here and happy..Tx for sharing your memories!

WRONG, WRONG. Why did they need to show him in a wheelchair? Actually, presenting him--all alone in any empty theater--is one of the most brilliant devices of presenting a singer that I've ever seen. As I've said before, perhaps the greatest singer of the Twentieth Century.

One of the greatest singers of all time, and this was an extraordinary performance. Didn't realize the song was made in 1965. Is that possible? It stands alone. It doesn't belong to any era. It could have been made in 1975. The song exists in and of itself. Thank you for posting, and thank you Walter Jackson.

Almost hard to believe that this was written by the same guy (Chip Taylor) who wrote the Troggs' number one hit "Wild Thing" the following year. "Welcome Home" was a Top 15 soul hit, but due to limited airplay on pop radio stations, it got no higher than #90 on the main Cash Box and Billboard national charts in June 1965. Walter Jackson was one of the greatest smooth baritone soul ballad singers of all time.
