My New Life As A Doctor... Is It What I Expected?

- As a new resident doctor that just began working almost 2 months ago, there's so much that we need to talk about. My working hours, what the job has been like, have I still been able to make it into the gym? I feel like in medical school, I had so many questions about what life would be like as a doctor and I'm hoping that over the next few years I'll be able to show everyone exactly what goes on during what some people say are some of the hardest years in a doctor's career. I'd love for everyone to leave suggestions regarding exactly what you'd like to see and what you'd like for me to talk about. Whether you're a Med Student, premed student or just someone who's interested, it's nice to meet you and welcome to my new life as a doctor!

I know what you were hinting towards at the end. It's easier to push yourself and have a positive outlook towards something that you enjoy and experience fulfillment with. Some people who go into medicine for the money don't realize how true this is and may experience dissatisfaction with pursuing something purely for the dollar value assigned to it. Income is important to an extent but happiness and fulfillment isn't a constant state that you can reach by buying expensive things.
I'm glad to hear it from you as well Balihar :) It's strange because I didn't know the feeling before being here, but when you feel like you're actually making a difference at work, time just goes by a little more quickly. Moving forward, I'm hoping that I can keep it this way 🤙
i told my son going into the medical field as a Dr people will never forget a Dr who carrie’s compassion you don’t see much of that today and i try to instill this in him . he is in his last year of medical school looking at going into family medical . u seem to have that compassion in you keep that up .
Hi AJ, that sounds like something that my parents have told me as well - and I entirely agree. All the best to your son in his final year and have a great week as well :)
The way you carry yourself is something I aspire to be like you’re super professional and genuine !! I hope you do videos on clerkship vs residency and how you juggle all your responsibilities.
Thank you Maha :) I'm glad (and very relieved) to hear that my presentation comes off that way. I'll be sure to add something like that to the list of things to talk about!
Awesome video Dr. C! That note at the end really hit hard, glad to hear you're enjoying residency, hoping to be there someday soon
Thank you Paul :) I'm glad to hear that it resonated a bit. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and everyone else that are going through the process right now. Best of luck
Amazing vid! Thank you for your positive words. I would like you and your brother talk about the journey of medicine for your next/future vid.
Happy to see that you are happy
Thanks Mae :)
I love ur content man ur attitude is inspiring keep up the grind, we need more of u.
Thanks Rakan :) No sign of stopping on my end yet 💪aha
I have so much respect for your hard work and dedication to medicine. Your genuine care for patients is inspiring! I really resonated with what you said at the end of the video. I am hoping to apply to FM programs in Ontario during the upcoming cycle, and would love to reach out closer to the date. All the best Gianluca! 😊
Thank you so much Gloria :) I'm really glad to hear that it resonated and that's awesome to hear that you'll be applying to FM. Please feel free to send me an email or leave a comment here and I'll try my best to get back to you ASAP. All the best to you as well ☺
Always look forward to your video man! Keep it going and sending you positive vibes. The segment at the end is something I can definitely agree with, and I respect that you voiced this important idea
Thank you brother, I'm glad to hear it :) Positive vibes right back at you 💪
A really nice specialty where you collect an insane amount of knowledge! Good luck!
Thank you! :)
Really motivating to see someone hit the gym on a regular basis besides residency!
Totally agree, I wish I had more videos of people working out in residency to help motivate me before too 💪 It's a great feeling to still be hitting new records after shifts!
Miss you man!!! Glad you're taking care of Niagara :)
Miss you too buddy, really wish we could be holding it down together still but I know you're doing awesome in your new environment 💪 We'll catch up soon with stories
I really look up to you, it's great how the real journey of becoming a doctor is. Your videos have been inspiring and motivating me to keep going on this journey, it will always be too!! It'll be interesting to see more videos of what the other departments you will work in look like, can't wait for your next videos!^^
That's really humbling to hear, thank you Michelle :) I'm glad that the videos have been helpful and I really wish you all the best of luck with your own journey. I definitely will keep the once per month residency update VLOGS going and will comment on the other departments for sure. Keep up all the hard work and see you around!
@@nxtgenmd that's good news, will for sure be waiting for the next update:)! Thank you very much, all the best to you as well!!^^
You're an inspiration man, i'm glad its going well. Ending of the vid was great.
Thank you dude. glad you enjoyed it :) Spoke with Shawn about you after we figured that all out, such a cool dude and such a small world 😂 Enjoy your week!
@@nxtgenmd Glad you guys got connected. Never expected he would be on the same peds rotation as you haha, small world indeed. Cheering for you both🦾
Love the consistent uploads even with the stress of residency, good work! Quick question how many vacation days do you get as a resident and how does taking time off in general work in residency?
Glad to see that its appreciated bud :) It's a nice way for me to focus on something non-medical for a bit to sit down and edit 🤙 Great question though - 4 weeks paid vacation and I believe up to 7 days for conferences and other professional responsibilities. You need to submit a request more than a month in advance (this is preferred by admin but exceptions have been made depending on circumstance I'm sure). Then they need to approve it and all of your preceptors will be made aware, but you'll be responsible to make sure of it. Also, then I'd need to rebook my patients if I'm on family medicine clinic at the time of my vacation
You made it dude, congratulations! btw how do you take your coffee?
Thank you buddy :) It's a nice feeling. Small black, no sugar 🤙I'm more of an espresso guy tbh but just not from Tim's aha
Awesome video … keep the gym scenes in the vlogs
Thanks buddy, I totally will and could probably provide updates on fitness goal too 💪
Niagra is in the best hands 💪
Aha thanks buddy 💪
Inspiration for the imgs. Sir can you make a vedio about opportunities of observership and volunteer for imgs in Ontario?
Glad to hear it my friend :) Unfortunately, I don't know anything about that topic as most opportunities are usually coordinated through the universities themselves or through word of mouth and knowing certain doctors. Please reach out to your school and ask if they can be of assistance - all the best of luck!
Do you eventually go and spend time in private clinics seeing how they run? How many days each week do you work? 5 or 6 days?
Garden fresh tomatoes for an Italian is true treat....pasta sauce!
Yes :) over the course of the year we get a few months dedicated to family medicine practices exclusive (I believe its 3-4 months but will need to double check). This week was 6 days, but next week will be 5 days - there's no real set schedule but it just depends on how the hospital call works out and whether or not you get scheduled for a weekend.
Aha that's exactly what I did with them - nothing better after a long day 💪
You are absolutely inspiring! You love what you do, and that's priceless🤍🩺
Thank you Yasmin! I totally agree :) Best of luck with everything 🩺
@@nxtgenmd Thank you very much!!!
Could you talk about relationships in residency?
Sure thing Ronan, I'm sure my gf would love to come on and do another video closer to the holidays 🤙
Day to day resident life, pros and cons. What’s best part of the job
Will do Geofrey 🤙
I think you're allowed to hate residency but still want to be a doctor. Some are better than others and if you're overworked and underappreciated I think feeling that way is a natural consequence. There is only so much positivity you can throw at something before acknowledging it sucks. I'm glad you're having a good time though.
Hi Kaitlyn, you're definitely right in saying that :) Residency is hard and the hours aren't the best... Also there's the whole "wow I have a lot of debt right now" factor that weighs heavily on most of us. My reflection is based around the trend of medical students choosing specialties that they don't actually love because of things like prestige, ties to inherent self worth, money, etc. In addition though, I'm starting to understand more and more that life in residency for many specialties is not an "exception to how life will be afterwards." If you fundamentally don't enjoy / find the value of the field that you're in, then I think that pursuing it regardless may be on of the key factors driving residency burnout rates. Just my two cents as someone very new to the field, but many of my preceptors throughout medical school and even now have continued to work long hours and have described feeling even more stress after residency when faced with the added responsibility of being an independent practitioner.
Hello :) can u pleaseeeee make a video on mcqqe prep, what to study ,how to study.
M a graduate from pakistan
Hi Zoe, I have a video like that already :) Please check my recent videos and good luck!
What are useful tools for residency? Ie:iPads
I'm not a big fan of iPads to be honest, but some people like them. Really, you need a good laptop (I use the 2020 MacBook Air M1), a smartphone and access to library resources, databases and uptodate through your residency program. Beyond that I like a good text based source too - Tintinalli's Emergency medicine book is something that I want to burn through over the next 2 years. Beyond that, it's mostly personal preference until the final residency exams roll around :)
Hello doctor I'm a great admirer of you & your work, can you give information about how can a international medical graduate can apply observership or elective in canada ,
Even i have a same question, I'm also a IMG & want to do observership in canada pls answer this doctor
Hi there :) I'm glad that the videos have been helpful. I have a guide up on the CaRMS residency application process but unfortunately I don't know much about how electives would work. Have you checked with individual school websites or contacted your own school for more info?
@@nxtgenmd actually i tried to apply in uhn ( university health network) in thier website they were given that we can do that by contacting doctors in canada , but upto now i have not been there I'm studying in Ukraine, so can you give some information about this by investigating in hospitals
@@user-og3yy5vp2o I'm sorry my friend, but I wouldn't have any more information than that. I would recommend loooking at medical school websites or perhaps conducting a search of doctors in Canada who are taking international students for electives. Beyond that, I have never needed to go through that process myself
@@nxtgenmd no problem dr , do you any idea that where can I find Canadian doctors
Hello, I have 2 questions.
1. Can we change our field after working in a particular field?
For example if we are getting family medicine from carms, can we change to surgery after few years of practice?
Or is there any other way to change field?
2. Minimum marks required in mccqe1 and NAC OSCE to get surgery field?
Kindly help me through this. Thank you in advance.
Hi Rananjay, usually you cannot change fields once you begin working - when we are accepted into a residency, the contracts are binding from what we've been told... however, there are some small exceptions every year. I do not know the specifics, but sometimes if someone has dropped out or been dismissed from a residency, then you may* be able to flip into that program. We had one doctor switch from FM to internal med last year I believe. However, most students will tell you to not expect this will happen when planning your residency. As far as marks, we really have no idea. Some specialized surgical and non-surgical programs do not accept IMGs, some do. Your best bet is to look at the program descriptions on CaRMS and then perhaps talk to other students who have matched into them in the past or email the program directly.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much…
Sir kanyou see your car
it's a 2016 mustang :) you can get a better look in this video here: czcams.com/video/5hpK_Cbyb08/video.html
Wanna meet you plz. I am new img in canada.
We recently had a meetup on McMaster campus :) Hopefully there will be more in the future - hope you've been enjoying Canada so far!
@@nxtgenmd hope I will join canadian medical system soon. Will wait for the next meet up❤️
If you were in internal medicine you’d be miserable. Family medicine is easy. People who are not enjoying it are probably experiencing burnout
Does doing a job you hate become easier by saying that you don’t like it because it’s hard - and that anyone who likes their job only likes it because it’s easier? Seems like a pretty self defeating way to look at things
I work with Criminal Defense Attorneys and 90% of them look miserable. Their face tells me how unhappy they are with their profession. It's sad to see them spend so many years educating themselves to accomplish misery. College or prestige does not always mean happiness.
