We have so much more varieties/mutations in Europe. I've kept many of those almost orange in colour and larger than the average ones. Javas are my favourites, don't know why, since childhood - my last one passed away at the age of11 - his best friend was a budgie who used to feed him... bitter memories.
I love this bird! We call them Bengalese in Europe. What truly breaks my heart is their life span; I wish they could, at least, reach 10 years... Love 'em ! Cheers :)
What do you think of a pair that both feed the young and get along while both feeding but seem to hate each other inbetween feedings, it is about 2 weeks into raising thier clutch.
I have had a pair like that before and I thought that it was comical. I would keep a close eye on them and if the aggression gets worse I would separate them until the chicks have weaned. But if they are having minor squabbles they should be fine together.
when the breeding season or bug hits, is there issues with having a mixed group of finches together? do you separate pairs if there's territorialism going on? looking to learn more of the cons so & can enjoy the pros
Yeah there usually seems to be a pair or species of birds that are a little more aggressive than others. I try to keep calm species of birds together to avoid these situations but sometimes that’s not the case and I separate them.
I can make a video on that for you. but I use typical LED lights nothing special. The birds also have access to the aviary that receives natural sun light every day.
One pair the young have come out of the nest not exactly fully featherd but able to perch. The issue is the mother has started building a new nest but one of the babues wants to sit in the new nest and she cant sit in it with him, now what.
You can add a second nest for the mom to build lay her eggs. You can also put the babies and the dad in another cage after the hen has laid her second round of eggs. The dad should wean the chicks and the mom can sit tight on her new nest off eggs without the chicks jumping in and out of it.
Just wanted to let you know that my two pair of canaries had 10 young all together. But sadly my one female died today for some unknown reason, she was fine one minute and dead the next. I first thought egg bound and still not sure but now i hope my three young from her make ut. Dad is in with them but he is so into feeding them that he gas them scared vecause he keeps pecking thuer beajs to nake them feed but instead they jyst fly away from him. I havent seen them eat the eggfood on thiernown yet but i hope they are vecause im going to need to separate them soon.
I really like the Chocolate, I have several of them and several Fawn, Fawn are also close to solid fawn. I like the solid colors, several of mine have lighter lower chest other close to solid. I try to keep away from the pied. Now I am taking care of my Mom, and I do not have time for them. I am hoping to sell them out other than a few for my own aivery, as I love looking at them. If you know where I can sell from 10 to 20 at a time. Mixed Chocolet and Fawn. I live in Chestefield Michigan. Some of mine are truely beautiful. I have not seperated them male from female as I do not have the time. I hope someone wants them that will really enjoy them as have I. As a matter of fact it is hard to part with them, I breed for color and was suscessful. I want to sell all at once not two her and there. By the way yours are beautiful.
In the U.S there are a couple breeders. A guy named Ivan who is from the Seattle Washington area sells euro societies and also ships. There is a lady in Montana Named Lori who sells these same breeds, and I have heard of another breeder in the New York area who sells Euro societies but i don't know a name.
Its hard to give good advise on females and males for societies because there is no way of knowing the gender by visual sexing. The best way to know is if the male sings and the female lays an egg.

Chris I forgot to ask what type of light are you using in your Breeding cages? Can you please show us or tell us how you place them. Are they hung?
I can make a video on that for you. but I use typical LED lights nothing special. The birds also have access to the aviary that receives natural sun light every day.
Thank-you, I'll be on the look-out for how you place them behind the cages.

How to identify male and female society other then sound ?
Thats the only way. The males sing and the females lay eggs. There are no visual ways to tell gender for society finches
