I forgot about how good Kirk Gibson was in College. I was always a Bearcats and Buckeyes fan. I remember how good he was. I was lucky enough to watch Travis Kelces Cincinnati Bearcats career. Kirk would have done well in the NFL as a Two Professional Sport Phenom like Bo Jackson !
When Daryl Rogers took over at MSU, the team was really short of talent. After an early practice he said something like, "Well, at least there's this one linebacker that looks good." Then someone told him that he was looking at a wide receiver.
Had no idea he played football. The guy was good! He was a great athlete. The image of him is he was sort of gimpy and injury prone, but he was fast and a great athlete. He could have been an NFL player.
He was an All-American flanker (what they called college receivers back then) his last two years at MSU and was actually projected to be a first-round draft pick. But he was drafted by the Tigers first, and no one wanted to take a chance on drafting him since he chose baseball. I believe the NFL Cardinals took a flyer on him in the 7th or 8th round, just in case.
@@Polack-ml9fh That’s crazy! Would have never known. The image of his is limiting around the base path. You can see some of that speed when he first joined the Tigers.
@@mmcneil777 czcams.com/video/R5pjOaP4zpM/video.html The play at the :13 mark and the play after (a reverse) really show his speed. Very long natural strides and he was strong. He still holds a number of receiving records at MSU. Easily top 3 MSU receivers of all time. What could have been?!
I knew he played college football but I had no idea how explosive he was! He looks as if he had 4.40 speed or even faster!
University of TN fan here but nothing but respect for Kirk Gibson and Michigan State…
He was a very fluid runner, and more speed than I ever thought he had.
Legend had it he ran the 40 in the 4.2 range, but that’s not very believable. He was fast, though, and a great athlete.

Except his injured knees.

It's been said he ran a 4.2 forty. At 21 ypc, I believe it.
Yep, but I’d like to know the real time. I’m not totally sure he was faster than a 4.4, but the dude could run pre bad knees days

@@Nhamp2000 Looks. If it had been today he would have been drafted and been a two-sports star. He was also surprisingly fast and would outrun guys.
@@mmcneil777 he ran a NFL scout clocked 4.29 40.

There was a bias against white wide receivers at the time.
Still my hero!! But Go Blue!
