    I love the way SWT refurbed those 455s. They are super up to date inside and the new motors somehow retain that unmistakable BREL-esque whine.

      Its a shame though despite modernisation and the new AC traction, SWR are tossing these and the refurbished 456s in the bin...

      @@CHOO-CHOOPlane I think it's because SWT were the ones that wanted to keep them, and now SWR are in the mix, their doing their own thing with these units. I hope they get taken by southern last minute or something.

      I was pissed off when Govia threw away there 365 fleet dispute probably being better than any of their other trains. I can say that too because ive been on them.

      @@bb-3653 Haha. Southern scrapped them first!! Remember what happened years ago with the class 442s? They withdrew them, used class 458, only to have to put 442s back again, newly refurbished, then the 442s are gone for good!!!!! Now the 455s are staying on SWR for, who knows how long, they just do whatever they want!!! Money go brr!!!! 🤑🤑🤑💰💰💰

    This takes me back. I used to frequent this line back in the early 1970s. A lot has changed since then. Martin’s Heron and Winnersh Triangle didn’t exist, and that fence on the platform at Ascot wasn’t there either, and you could get out of the train on either side. We used to nip out and get the train back to Bracknell on the other platform.

      70 is the max speed on that line, if the driver holds it open and the unit's have good motors then it is possible to hit 70 between wokenham and bracknel and between sunningdale and virginia water.

    Who allowed this toilet-less units on a +80 min service? This route is perfect for the 458, as it has toilets, comfortable seats and a lot of standing room. 455s can go well on Hampton Court and Windsor services.

    Fun fact: GWR do a much faster service from Reading to London.
    They'll blast you into London in like 25 minutes, and the fastest trains don't stop anywhere. Slower trains stop at (Taplow, Maidenhead), Slough.

  • @bb-3653
    @bb-3653 Před 3 lety

    Apparently this line is only like 70mph, i think it would be better if it were rated to 75mph to 90mph, or maybe even 100 at some points. wouldn't that be better?
    .it has longer distances between stations since it goes to reading.
    .it likely had signals that are with enough distance and even then can't the signals be shifted a bit to accommodate for the new speed limits.
    .some track reinforcement could be done I guess.
    .
    In summary the southern parts of British rail, tend to have lines that look like they can be modified for higher rated speeds, but....they just stay mid speed or slowish? Why is that ? (70mph is fast, but southwestern railway have 100mph capable units, so I mean, it would make more sense to have faster track speeds where appropriate in my opinion, a long stretch of track like this looks suitable, and it would be way more convenient imo)

      Nope. And whoever designed these now distinctly long in the tooth trains had never heard of the word "ventilation". Modern yes, when they replaced slam door rolling stock. But well past their best now.

    • @southwest1585
      @southwest1585 Před 4 lety

      Isle of Life it's there because the class 455 was a 4 car unit and that unit had 3 cars so they used a class 508 car instead of a 455
