The question isn`t and never should be if you *need* to learn the language of the country you`re going to. You *always* should learn the language. Everything else is just an insult to the people there. At least in the case of living there. For holidays, what you and your Mexican friend are doing (I think), it`s a bit different and I somewhat agree. You don`t have to, but it would be much much better if you knew a bit at least
Fair lol, main point is that yeah you can have a lot of fun here and probably do most of everything you wanna do, but it’s a completely different experience if you do speak and understand Japanese

It's 2024 I think it's time to learn English. English is spoken more around the world than some other languages.
But if you already speak english then you can learn other languages
