Decision fatigue is a noted phenomenon where people who are mentally exhausted for any reason tend to make worse decisions via either hasty decision making or decision avoidance or what have you.
When it comes to playing games for an extended amount of time, you will be constantly be spending a lot of mental energy doing anything, which can easily result in lower quality brain power.
As such, people who are accustomed to constantly mentally draining themselves will begin gathering habits that let them only use mental resources where they're most effectively spent, and then default back to lower cost automatic behavior otherwise.
I'm no scientist, but at least I feel like I get what Simple is going on about to some extent beyond making excuses for himself, which is also another tool to avoid spending mental energy being stressed about being a fraudulent gamer.

When I was grinding for the Mario theme in Tetris 99, I felt like there were a lot more of strong players
Like, a Mario theme event motivated a lot of people to replay that game, that's kinda cool

I think spin jumping right at the beginning of a level gives you a small speedboost, useful for those 10 second speedrun levels!

I liked because i know exactly what you mean with playing lazy. You're playing for fun and not focused and then you decide its enough and sit up and focus. Its especially weird because quite often it will happen when you thought you were already trying your hardest but its that little bit extra you can pull from. Absolute focus combined with shmove moves..feels good man.💖

that satanic level had a dev block at the beginning, reachable only after getting the propeller mushroom (i think it was also indicated by the sound effects). but simple's solution for that was sickkk, i have never seen it actually being implemented in a level

With the "playing lazy" that you were talking about for Mario Maker: I think it's you putting in only the effort that you feel the level requires, and you're trying to build up the skillset of doing less intensive technical stuff while your focus is elsewhere like giving good commentary, future projects... or Runescape lol. For Melee: you probably just mirror the opponents skill level, which ends up making it a closer match for your opponent if they're not quite at your level yet, but it might feel like you can't even pull out your best sometimes when fighting them until the very end where you realize that the match is kinda close. "Playing lazy" is a good summation of it tho
The Koopa sound effect was likely the clue, that says you did the level as intended.
The way everything was so bad and simple that you wouldn't look for advanced mechanics and most players would give up.
It is a bait and switch tactic to make a hellish level.
Yeah, I understand what you mean by "playing lazy", basically it happens to me when I play Rock Band/Guitar Hero. If i'm not looking to FC (full combo) a song, I just play good enough to get 5 stars and that's all, doesn't matter how sloppy it looks (or in that case sounds). If I see a potential FC, that's when I choose to shmoove, and that first stage was basically trial and error. I like that stage outta all of them played.

Yes, that was the mechanic to clear that level. I built an uno mas with that which included the cloud and pipe identically to that level. You might have noticed the creator gave you a noise on the koopa when you hit it.

I know exactly what you mean by autopilot. Easily my worst trait when I play League of Legends is that my opponent has to hit a sweet spot for me to do really well. If they're super terrible and I just get so far ahead I carry the game, sure I can autopilot a win. But if they're just competent enough to avoid fighting me and I just shove waves and hope they make a blunder instead of looking to make plays on other parts of the map, I'll lose even if I do get ahead. I know that's a strategy for playing from behind, but it works exceptionally well on me because I just autopilot. "I need to get X far ahead to carry the game. Easiest way to do that is to keep killing this guy that has already died twice to me. Oh, he's staying safe. Well, he'll make a mistake again sometime." And then it's been 45 minutes, he's two levels ahead of me from roaming, and my team is calling me a loser.
Can we just appreciate how Simple cares so much for the quality and design of the merch products he puts out? This man really cares.

I feel like the kind of viewers you pull in all get what you mean about your focus sort of going away when you're not challenged and starting to make dumb mistakes.
It's kinda like once you've experienced those moments when you needed all your gears on max to complete something, anything less doesn't feel worth it.
Like "Even when I complete this, I already knew I could do it", where as in the previous example when you finish you're like "Holy shit I didn't know I could do that!!"

Seeing Simple play a level made for Dashie, and him not understanding all the references from his channel was funny, but deep down I wished he understood XD
almost 3 years down the line i wanted to sleuth out once and for all what the intended solution for that dashie level was so i slapped it into level viewer. turns out simple's after-the-fact hunch was right, there is just a hidden block with a vine that you need to propeller suit into. it is in one of the two columns you'd expect it to be, just right next to the cloud in front of the pipe (it's honestly a bit surprising the simpleflips of yore didn't check there first) but it does make the level very disappointing. i was really holding out hope that insane tech was intended and required, given how the setup for it works out so exactly. but alas, simple had to inject his own Cool Shit in order to make an otherwise dumb easy level be anything. so it goes...

Playing lazy is when something is genuinely not that hard, but because you know you can win/beat it you just kinda half ass it and lose/die in what would have otherwise been an easy first try. You end up spending 100x longer doing something because you know you can do it and don't give it the energy to just be done with it.
