This mantra is invoking the presence of the half man, half lion form of Krishna who emerged from a stone pillar to protect his devotee Prahlad, only a small child. Prahlad Maharaj was being tormented by his father a great king and yogi named Hiranyakashipu, who was filled with pride and avarice. He believed he had cheated death from great powers he received after his yogic penance and began to subjugate everyone in the know universe. When his wrath turned towards his innocent son Prahlad, Narasimha (or Krishna) had to appear to rescue him.
This form of Krishna, known as a Narasimha (sometimes Nrsimha or Nrsingha), gives protection to us in times of difficulty and fear. He sees his devotees like a mother lion sees her cubs.
This particular mantra is called a kavacha or sonic armor. It is also prayer. Each verse names a different part of the chanter's body and by meditating on the connection to the Lord's body it purifies and protects us. By listening to or reciting this mantra, we are protected spiritually and materially. Sometimes bhaktas will memorize this mantra and chant it daily in times of difficulty.
This video is being release on Narasimha Chaturdasi one year after the release of the music-only version. This is the day that is celebrated annually as the appearance of Narasimha. At twilight on this day, many millions of years ago, Narasimha took the demon king on his lap and using his nails as weapnos, He give Hiranya Kashipu an unforgettable intestinal surgery without anesthesia.
This day is also the 41st anniversary of the sannyasa initiation of HH Radhanath Swami. We pray to Lord Narasimha for his constant protection and empowerment in the mission of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya.
