- Siccas Media presents John Bullard - J.S Bach Prelude from the third Violin Partita BWV 1006 played on a banjo. ►siccasmedia.com/
John Bullard plays his own transcription of the Prelude from Violin Partita No. 3, BWV 1006 by J. S. Bach (1685-1750). Like in the Lute version, the earthy, plucked tone of the banjo conveys the raw beauty of Bach’s lines.
The first graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music to earn a degree in performance with the banjo, John Bullard has established a critically praised performing and recording career dedicated to exploring the artistic marriage of banjo and classical music. Bullard understands that accepting the banjo-a “folk” instrument with a complex pedigree-into the classical fold is a challenging proposition for traditionalists; the guitar once had to navigate a similar journey to mainstream acceptance. But through three album-length recordings, live performance, and workshops, Bullard continues to introduce the classical banjo to a growing audience worldwide.

Never expected to hear Bach on the banjo, but it works. Well done
Thank you James! You are right, unexpected but this performance is truly fantastic! 😀
As someone who had tried to learn this on banjo-I can’t express how talented this man is. It’s an incredibly punishing piece.
Bach transcends instrumentation. He just understood the beauty of life and could illustrate it in any tuning. Great playing here 🙏🏻.
Enchanting. I had no idea a banjo could be played so sensitively.
Thank you Melvyn! Would you like to hear more of John's performances on our channel in the future?
@@SiccasGuitars I can answer for Melvyn -- yes, please! From all of us!
@@SiccasGuitars agreed. More of this please. I’m a classical fanatic (especially Bach) but I also play banjo.
If J.S Bach could have ever gotten his hands on a banjo, what a thing to imagine
My son got a banjo and loves it. I am not a fan of Americana songs and I was curious to see if someone had done classical pieces on the banjo. CZcams didnt fail me! I found this and it is a GREAT interpretation of the song! In 3-5 days business days, I will be a banjo player too.
Brilliant. My favorite Bach piece on any instrument. I think the banjo is underrated.
Beautifully performed.
Very clean and very beautiful
Brilliant, John!!!! BRAVO
AWESOME!!! I never thought to do this style on a banjo........I just bought one last summer for kicks......you know what I'm gonna do and am off to right now.....this is gonna be a blast! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you Stephen!! There is nothing better for us to know that these videos inspire people to play music! Practise and we are looking forward to hear the result 😀🙏👏🥳
BRAVO!!! Fantastic!
Ahh... Bach's Partita N°3 Prelude... Another one of my favorites! Very interesting to hear it played on banjo, beautiful performance. Bravo! 👏👏👏
Fantasic! Banjo sounds great - love it, thanks for posting this.A fan from the UK.
Now, that's something I did not expect to see a Banjo. It was nice to see and to hear.
Thank you Dennis, we were also very surprised but it is actually a very interesting and mesmerizing performance isn't it? 😉 We definitly love it!
Beautiful!
Bachwoods country 🤠
This was so cool! Awesome playing!! I didn’t even know you could play something like this on a banjo.
Thank you Jared! We had exactly the same thought, but the result is just brilliant! 😉
What is not well known is that this was music played on the 5 string banjo roughly 1880s to roughly 1915.
I have long been a fan of John Bullard and have CDs which are played frequently.
As to the banjo being underrated.. I believe under utilized would be an appropriate observation.
Thank you for presenting this.
More like starting around the 1850s
@@44thala49 Classic and classical or Minstrel?
Absolutely great 👏👏
Thank you Santos! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Lovely!
Thank you Terens! What he gets out of his banjo is very impressive isn't it? ;)
I'm currently learning this piece in E major on the banjo, with a different tuning (E, B, F#, B, B). Stopped in here for inspiration. I'd love to learn it in G, too! Awesome picking, man!
This Prelude on banjo ? Well I'm praying it doesn't suck a**. Well sir , it certainly didn't suck. IT WAS TERRIFIC! I think you nailed the tempo and timbre. BRAVISSIMO!
Standing ovation from me in my apartment in semi-locked down NYC
🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶😊
the art resides on creativity!
True words 😀
He had me at the first six notes! 👍👍😄
Hi John, nice this is how you recognise a truly great performance! 😀
Great!
Thank you Pablo Villa!
Very unique!!!...🤙😎🤘
Yeah that's for sure!! 😁
Another outstanding performance by John Bullard! Thank you for posting it!! The theater is beautiful! Where was the video shot?
Thanks Stephen - this was in the Byrd Theater in Richmond, VA - an old movie theater
Thanks it is well appreciated. J.S. Bach would have enjoyed it I'm sure such a plucked Prélude BWV1006.
Muito bom 👋👋👋👋👋👋
Muito obrigado!
Such a bright and merry performance!!
Son: Hey Pa. What did you learn when you traveled back in time to meet Bach.
Pa:
😂😂😂
This is beautifully done!! Nothing better than Bach performed on a plucked instrument. Thank you for sharing your skill and musicality! Greetings from harpsichordist EC!! Long may you flourish!!
Étonnant
N'est ce pas? 😀 Qu'est ce que vous en pensez?
🙂Cool
😍😍
Thank you Rafolker!
Very entertaining. I suppose someone had to do it! Ukulele next? Perhaps a mouth harp? Hmmm... BWV1006 0n a triangle?
😂😂😂 Thanks you Allan for brightening our day! We will take notes of your suggestions 😂
@@SiccasGuitars At last! Someone appreciates my warped humour!
"Hail to the Chief" on kazoo.
2.59 there is a D natural instead of a D#
wow - good ear! That is a great catch and I had made the mistake of not carrying the accidental through the bar...written correctly in my transcription, but a mental error that has remained in the fingering. I transposed from E maj to G maj and missed that when I did the fingering : )
Well I nevar!
Rad
Definitly!
Was ist ein Gentleman-Musiker?
Jemand der Banjo spielen kann, es aber nicht tut.
😂😂😂😂 Come on!
Bachjo
This settles my dilemma. The execution of my evil plan is going to have be birthed in banjo renditions of select, baroque-saturated excellence.
Great, don't suppose there's a tab available for this is there?
Ben sorry for the long delay...the tab is available in my book "Bach on the Banjo" which is by MelBay publishers...has standard notation and tab
Bela Fleck already did stuff like this on "Perpetual Motion"! Great album!
True Lyle, an absolutely fantastic album! What do you think about John's performance? They have a prety different sound a picking technique! 😉
YEE HAW!
He is pretty good but have you guys heard of this guy named Scruggs?
The guy that stole the style and technique from Johnny Whiznant.. That guy ?
'Perfect pitch' for a banjo: when it lands in the dumpster without hitting the sides.
Of course we know that your tastes are definitive and the only one that counts. If you dislike the banjo why would you put yourself through viewing the video? Just stupid or machoistic?
@@cersadescosmos7497 😿I bet you're a blast at parties!
I hate the sound of the Banjo. But you did good my friend..... I don't mean to sound harsh it's just the sound of the banjo hurts my ears.
Taste and colours, that's very personal 😉 Thank you very much for acknowledging the talent behind this unique performance :)
A respectable attempt to legitimize the Banjo 😅
Ah banjo isn't a legitimate instrument you say.... Hmm...
Ahh... Bach's Partita N°3 Prelude... Another one of my favorites! Very interesting to hear it played on banjo, beautiful performance. Bravo! 👏👏👏
Thank you Rabendranath! Would you like to see more from John on our channel in the future? 😀
@@SiccasGuitars Hi! Absolutely! I rarely see anything remotely similar as classical banjo on other channels, it would be more than welcome. Cheers and stay safe!
