    Viewer challenge! Where is Brenda standing during the dance sequence? Hint: Just a little bit of her is visible in a few frames.

      Thanks for the comment and you're welcome. We try to find stuff not usually seen or, perhaps, a better, longer clip than the commonly recycled ones.

    Even when the script doesn't go as planned,
    Brenda is able to quickly improvise and make it work,
    With a regal aplomb.
    The Brenda magic!

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, I think it's a more lively version. C&J do it as a folk song with basically just guitars and a drummer. The vocals were smooth, but in a rather dull monotone. Brenda adds accents (syncopation) and we also have a full orchestra. It's a swinging version like a Sinatra might have done.

    No one will ever equal the talent of Brenda Lee....she's still touring to sold out audiences in 2015! The "Silver Beatles" (original three sans Ringo) opened for her during her tour of Germany in the early 1960's, shortly before the Beatles hit the big time. Don Hicks

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  Před 9 lety +2

      I have tried to pin down the dates in Germany both in books about the Beatles and on websites, but without much success. It appears that they actually opened for her two different years: 1) Spring 1961 - the pre-Ringo Silver Beatles and 2) late 1962 - The boys were already having success in the UK, but had a contractual obligation to be at the Star Club in Hamburg. (edited to correct an error I had posted earlier)

    Mr Bright is right. At 0:15 Barry begins to sing Brenda's solo line "Gotta get to sing the songs I've heard". They just look at each other and laugh it off. Old pros, even then. At 0:25 it's Barbara's turn to solo "gotta get it going", but they obviously edited it out and went right to Barry.So what happened? She could not have forgotten the line which is repeated so many times. Sang off key? Maybe, but I guess we'll never know.

      Who is Barbara?

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  Před 3 lety

      @@danielalejandrosolano6635 Oh, I guess I did not include anything in the description. Barbara McNair (1934 - 2007) was a popular nightclub and TV performer. She recorded, but did not sell many records. She was the first black female to host a variety show (syndicated 1969-1971). To see her performance, you can watch czcams.com/video/xBaIgG0qbZw/video.html which is the whole show.

    This dress makes her look six foot tall,
    the always beautiful Brenda Lee.

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  Před 9 lety +3

      +Bill Bright Notice the staging: The dancers and the abstract sculptures are layered deep into the stage and Brenda is filmed from a low angle by the center camera. The combination makes her look tall compared to objects in the deep background. The right and left cameras is used for close-ups to avoid camera movement that would spoil the perspective. The cameraman, however, falls asleep during the instrumental part and has to pan back to BL from an empty part of the stage. Turn it up real loud and you can hear the director cursing! Just kidding...

      Brenda, if being short means, your beautiful and perfect in every way, then your short.

      Bill Bright Thanks! I notice things now that I didn't before. When you video edit one of these, you see it a few dozen times and can't help but "see" a little more. Another clever staging is the "Ballin' the Jack", but maybe I should comment about it on that video.

    Her phrasing and word rhythm are oddly better here than on her studio version.

      I have heard Brenda do different live arrangements of her records. And sometimes they are better. Here, she is singing into a pre-recorded soundtrack. The arrangement is probably by Peter Matz who was the Hullabaloo musical director with the NBC orchestra. Anyway, it worked well.

    This 1965 video subtlely highlights a subtle reversal of what started as a war by evangelicals, Nashville music producers, and radio payola against Rockabilly by a successful 5 year ban of rock from 1958 till 1963. It was now two years after rock had returned to America and this video is still purposely playing POP instead of rock. Brenda was not returning to her rockabilly roots and vocal inflections. BUT, get the innocent statues and the modern dance 💃, seemingly all in the style of African dance. On close inspection, those statues were neither modern art nor just cool. They were purposely there as a subtle 9th element -- Voodoo. NBC didn't want to overtly overdo their anti-Christ attack against western morals and Christ worship. They wanted to dress their attack up in nice gowns and mod outfits. You didn't even have to see the NBC logo at the end to know where it originated. Except for a few acts like the Stones, NBC never again tolerated promoting the cultural change groups of the late sixties even though they heavily supported a complete ban on Christian morals. They knew what happened in 1958 and didn't what the mistake repeated.
