This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

"My problem is, that I'm always trying to create a masterpiece, like AA" will be my next excuse, very nice.
Just don't refer to him by his first name,
That might be too dark a joke
“Win the game for adolf”
“For those of you who said ‘don’t invade the Soviet Union in the winter’, congratulations, you are an excellent historian.”
haha
it is dont invade Soviet Union ever not only winter
@@Faflik or just don't attack that region at all. Napoleon did that mistake once, mr mustache did that again
Awesome comments 😂😂😂😂
hahaha !! Excellent! :-)))
I love Agadmatorisms like "prefers," which is him politely saying the chosen move is terrible but we'll see what happens.
We will see what happens
We have engines and the advantage of hindsight, saying 'prefer' is perfect and fair.
This could apply to almost every move recommended by our good friend Mr Lowenthal.
@Genti Xhanari - I agree.
Adding to PunkSlayer1995's "Agadmatorism" I suggest verb: agadmatorise. adjective: agadmatorical.
Yes, definitely worth including in a dictionary.
‘Who are we to know, perhaps this move some depth we cannot see?’
Anderssen was such a gentleman he fianchettoed his rook
The rook starts out fianchettoed 🤪
Such an underrated comment
This is the most thrilling match up so far, all games were good. Morphys Saga is by far the best
I r correct
Exactly 🔥🙌
Fischer saga was better. And wtf Agad, show the draws.
True. That doesn't mean I'm not waiting for the Alekhine Saga or the Nezhmetdinov Saga. Fischer? Tal? Nomus?
I mean, he has a permanent Morphy head. Of course his games are the best!
It's weird that both great attackers of the era, Anderssen and Barnes, could win against Morphy only in rather long positional games.
todays game isnt really positional tho
Well when you say "great attackers" it's a bit of generalisation I suppose. They very surely were great attackers, but great chess players as a whole. Morphy also being a great chess player, better than these 2 "great attackers" meant it was easier to win against Morphy with more time to think.
And both of them have bad openings named after them
@@miximiller "bad openings"
@@Shreysoldier Well, I don't think 1. A3 and 1. F3 are that amazing.
I'm glad Anderssen wasn't totally humiliated, he's very entertaining.
Anderssen is an absolute gentleman. Unlike the other guys that Morphy played (or ran from him)
Me too
@@loverboy0069 lol yea
You could legit make an awesome anime on morphy , travelling from usa to europe , challenging all the grandmasters and having dinner with opponents.

I and 1000 others have been waiting for your daily video on the Morphy Anderssen match. Thanks Agad!
More like 100k ;)

True. I have actually been on the edge of my seat. Take your time though: quality over quantity!
Silencio, agreed!
Anderssen just like Morphy was way ahead of his time ❤️
@@stevansham2385 those German names😢
@@utkarshprakash7978 lol
Great game!. One of my favourite games of all time, which shows the quality of the match. It clearly shows that, although Anderssen was clearly inferior to Morphy, he nonetheless was capable of providing a good fight, and, even though Anderssen is mainly remembered as an attack maniac, here he shows some cool defensive savvy. Ra2!, was pretty cool indeed: a very nice defensive manouver, which completely paralyzes any attempt by black to checkmate white. In the end, although Morphy attempted many times to breakthrough on the Kingside, the rook in the second file was a perfect defensive asset, which indeed eventually allowed Anderssen to push in the queenside and obtain a superior position. Indeed, both players made suboptimal moves, which is to be expected, but it doesn't take anything away from the beauty of this game.
In my opinion, yesterday's game, the sharp Sicilian assault by Morphy, and today's game, the calm and composed defense and counterattack on the Queenside by Anderssen are the best games of this match. Morphy shows why he is considered by many, even today, the greatest chess player of all time, but also, Anderssen had a chance today to show his great quality as a player.
Thanks Antonio!.
Very nice comment. I know that's what the thumbs up is for, but since nice, well thought out comments on CZcams are fairly rare, I thought I should say something.
It takes two players to create a great chess game
21:34 "At least one more game"
22:03 "The day prior to the last game"
Gotta love how Agadmator try so hard not to give any spoilers to give us the best experience!
Well, the second phrase could be said at any given moment between this game and the last game. Its not necesarily an spoiler since we know that the match ends, only not in how many games
@@allemon93 The day prior to the last game Anderssen said he is glad to have "two sheep in safety". He just won the second game, Morphy only needs one more win and they play only one game per day.. so..
no!
@@hampusjohansson4113We don't know that the quote was given immediately after this game. If the next game is drawn the quote would still be accurate.
@@Skwertydogs yes, but we can deduce that Anderssen won't win any other games. Which is a huge spoiler.
In an older book on chess masters / great players / world champions (hint on the age of the book - Kasparov is the last champ there) I read, that these two gentlemen not only dined together, but they analyzed their games afterwards.
Picture that happening on top level today.. :-D
It does happen today. A lot. Carlsen often analyses his games with his opponents right after they conclude.
@@1994mrmysteryman Yes indeed. You get your occasional chess McEnroe, but for the most part, the game precedes the ego in chess.
@@1994mrmysteryman I am perfectly OK believing that he SOMETIMES discusses SOME stuff about the game(-s) with SOME players, but NOT at the TOP level - I'm not counting the press conference post-game wrap-up kind-of analysis here.
Just picture Magnus and Sergey or Magnus and Fabiano analyzing their games from 2016 / 2018 respective championships..
Or even better, the same with Gary and Anatoly.
Or the best (mental picture on the subject matter coming) - Anatoly and Viktor :-D
@@buffalodebill7986 czcams.com/video/o2rjqDJ14HY/video.html
This is two world champions analyzing their game.
Of course they're not going to dine together and everything and discuss games from way back in the past because nobody has time now a days.
Back in the day, things were infrequent and took more time. There was more time for chitchat and analysis and dining. You didn't have to be somewhere every 5 minutes.
I love it how this is decribed as the good stuff. It truly is
Finally the game everyone was waiting for
Thanks for your willingness to post so many of these Games
Well done, AA! The quote is self-deprecating in its subtle appreciation of his odds in the unfolding match.
Was eagerly waiting forr this video I dont know why I have started feeling sad for Andreson Idk whyyy THANKU AGADMATOR YOU HAVE CONNECTED THIS TO OUR LIVESSS
Morphy had his affect on all.of his opponents.. thats already sign of legendary artist..
Here's what Anderssen had to say about Morphy after the match to a reporter:
“I consider Mr. Morphy the finest chess player who ever existed. He is far superior to any now living, and would doubtless have beaten Labourdonnais himself. In all his games with me, he has not only played, in every instance, the exact move, but the most exact. He never makes a mistake (Morphy, present, here quietly smiled); but, if his adversary commits the slightest error, he is lost.”
The Eval bar during this game📈📉📈📉📈📉📈📉📈📉
Finally happy for ANDERSON as won, i find him to be someone who i can relate to as he messed up badly even when he was winning.
Two of the games Anderssen lost were won games - this match has been closer than it might seem. Morphy was kinda living rent free in his head.
Also, in all drawn position Anderssen was better
Legendary game by legends...
Great to see Andersson successful, a huge relief for him 2 wins twice as good as one win.
I always feel slightly relieved when he completes ".... Anderson".
I always appreciate the good stuff
Am I the only one who notices Agadmator vibing to some sort of music while waiting for us during the Pause the Video moment?
Agad looks that type of guy who sleeps with a scale below the pillar to measure how long he slept.
"Thank you for giving me a free move!" Haha, it's these hilarious lines that make your videos so enjoyable to watch. :D
If I were down 1-6 to Paul Morphy, I'd show him my grand opening as well.
Honestly I never want the Morphy Saga to end!
Spoiler: he dies.
im glad anderssen won this match, it means the good stuff can continue!

Love starting my day with "Hello everyone!"👍🏻
Since this series has started I've been playing the Anderson opening and seeing much success. Thank you Agad
Fantastic.
The pictures makes you think that this looks like a grandfather vs son game, but in reality they're actually almost the same age
Congratulations Anderssen
I’m so glad the match is not over!
today is a good day. I get to watch the good stuff, while smoking the good stuff 😎👍
Beauty in imperfection!
It's good to see Anderssen's 1.a3 idea finally paying off!
And here, Morphy makes like a honey badger: He don't care :)
He literally doesn't care 🤣
I actually laughed a little with that one, Morphy just practicing his Magnus/Hikaru impression
Well done
Love from India ! Morphy Saga OP!!
Nice! Way to go Andy!
I'm pulling for Anderson.
This is awesome
Those matches blow my mind
Anderssen knew that Morphy disliked closed and semi-closed positions. The 1. a3 opening gave him the best way to capitalize on that.
Granderson opening sounds better.
Nice to see my guy winninging the battle
My life had such a joy I cant bear normal life anymore
I would like to see the games between Louis Paulsen and Adolf Anderssen. They were probably the two people who gave morphy the best challenges.
How about the famous Barnes?

Agadmator's great great great grandfather in the Duke's Castle: "Hello everyone!"
Very nice MASTERPIECE 👌 🥳🥳🥳
Enjoyed this game. Really wanted Anderson to win because he was the underdog and he did it with great style.
Good video Agadmator!
At the end if Morphy could win one of the d or f pawns, he could sacrifice the rook for the other and it would be a drawn B+hP+K versus K endgame because the bishop is on the wrong color squares.
Generic comment arguing with you
Finally, a game where Morphy resigns.
Anderssen looks like the only guy who could actually play a game with Morphy. Everyone else just got steam rolled.
Thanks for making this video Agad. Those classic games are a joy
Happy to see fellow Morphy fans truly appreciate the way he played. He played positonal chess as well as the best GMs of today when he wanted. He just preferred to make chess fun to watch. Sad he only played a short time retiring at 22. Can you imagine Magnus or Kas stopping at 22? We would never know how truly great they would become.
Perfection
good Lord what a game!!!!!
I bet everyone watching this game was rooting for Anderssen to win.... Your Sagas r always amazing to watch... Keep Rocking #Agadmator
Antonio, will you also show the second batch of games between Anderssen and Morphy which consisted of 6 casual games played that same year 1858 and ended 5-1 for guess who ?
Aren't we going to get a Morphy video today? :(
Love this game. These guys are real heavyweights. Slug it out. Then have dinner afterwards. Just like Fischer/Spassky.
Or not.
"seine Schäfchen ins Trockene bringen" (literally "bringing his sheeps in the dry") is a common German saying
Yes, Anderssen translated this German idiom verbatim, probably unaware that there is no direct equivalent in English, it should have rather been something like "I have two already in the bag"
Yes , i also thought about that. In what language did Anderssen say it?
@@christianbensel Good question! I automatically assumed it would have been in English, but after all they were in Paris and Morphy spoke fluently French, so it might also have been French.
I'm not sure though whether Anderssen spoke any French whereas he definitely spoke English.
After watching AA ideas on the board I thought how great would it be for chess fans to have him and Tal at the same era !!
They should really make a movie on Morphy like how they did the Queen's Gambit, make it exciting and it would be a nice change to see pre-timer chess with gentlemen ad nobles wearin tophats and monocles
If Anderson is playing age of empires, he would be the one with two sheeps in the end.
This is the only time i even wanted morphy to draw or at least lose. I want more games
"1.f6 is by far the strongest opening for black."-Barnes
Still want you to continue longer sagas if you want, 10 episodes will not be enough.
Hi Agad, just one request- Could you please add a link to the whole playlist in the description from next time? Thanks! Love the videos!
I'd like to go back and time to watch this match in person
Heir Anderson is such a gentleman. I admit I've not always been so gracious when losing a match. In fact, I've occasionally been a real jerk. I will strive to do better and be more like Heir Anderson in the future.
*Happily capturing noises*
Crazy
Tablebase says that in the rook vs 3 pawns and bishop endgame, white's advanced d-pawn is the critical factor in winning. If that pawn is on d4, it's a draw.
Finally Anderssen played a tough match vs morphy
Oh, I was picturing the King as the shepherd, the bishop as the border collie, and the pawns as Anderssen's two sheep.
Anderssen shows how he is learning about Morphy and how to counteract him.
Nice game.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any info about the average lenght of a game between these two gentlemen?, I've following the entire saga as well as any other video of course, and yes, the games did not have clocks but I wonder how long takes a "gentleman move" considering they both travelled from far away to play and they probably did not have any other responsabilities to cover up
I liked the era before people knew what draws were.
Hey Antonio, do you have a list of all the phrases you use at the top of your videos by any chance? Also, if you haven't created a Morphy Saga playlist yet, you should, it's an amazing series :)

When’s the last time two current GMs had dinner after every match??? it just doesn’t happen like it used to lol Thank you for the amazing game!
#suggestion karpov vs karjakin blitz recently played
There is something satisfying knowing that Morphy could be beaten with White playing 1. a3
Go Anderssen. it's great that he is still fighting for wins. Some players might have given up being behind by so many points.
Interesting that two of the best ever attackers in Chess missed the pawn breaks c5 and f4 respectively. Could be that their 'Blood Was Up' in their thirst for a win which hindered their views. A good game that shows that ya gotta look at everything.
