Log Cabin Sauna Build Ep 2 | It's a Dog's Life

In Episode 2, I prepare the foundation of the sauna, peel and move logs for the log cabin build and explain how I square up the building. It's a dog's life as I take Cali, our golden retriever, for long walks through the forest, along a big river and swimming in the cold lake. I catch a fish for dinner and cook that fish in the following episode. This episode is full of drone footage from our walks and shows more of the property that the cabin sits on and how the bathhouse is situated in relation to the cabin. In the first snowfall of the year, sleet pounds down on the cabin while I'm working outside on the log sauna building.

The love and companionship of a "good dog" is a salve on the spirit of man, and a balm for even the most troubled soul. The unselfish love they give, and sheer joy they take from life should be a lesson for us all. Keep it as simple as possible, and greet each day as a new adventure. Everytime I watch your extended films I remember how much I love that piece of the planet. The rocks laid bare. The moss wet and spongy. The trees at end of there colours still shocking in contrast to that grey stone and evergreen backdrop. Nailed it yet again thanks. Winter is almost there. Almost.
This beautiful dog has a rich, full existence by being allowed the freedom to be one with her environment. I’ve never seen such integration and harmony like this before. Kudos to her human companion for allowing and encouraging this.

Don't know what I liked more: the practical geometry lesson, the gorgeous scenery or Cali. Cali reminds me of our first Golden when I was 11. Her name was Lorelei's Golden Sheen and she was also a love that wanted to play fetch, swim whenever she could and just be nearby all the time. Cali actually looks like
Sheen' s son, Mighty Mo of Pinebrook, that was my dog. I miss them still. I'm 75 now.

Your work ethic is an inspiration and loved the footage of you and Cali down by the lake . Just imagine 10,000 years ago there was a mile of ice above where you are sitting , grinding those rocks smooth and carving out that lake and many more , also dumping those rocks in your back yard ..

I live in Oregon and have always felt we Oregonians are especially blessed with God’s bounty but I must admit I’m slack-jawed at the vistas, forests and flowing rivers that comprise your homeland. While this video is especially compelling, I think its real gift lies in the love song you’ve created to Cali. What a deeply special relationship the two of you have. Her love for you is palpable and radiates across the screen, as does her happiness and contentment with her life. Shawn, I love going through the seasons with you at "our" cabin. When I watched your very first episode, I was just in the middle of my paternal leave from work. As work at the cabin progresses and more and more episodes are put together, my girl is slowly growing up. It feels a bit like your project is ours and you have contributed greatly to my well-being. I want to thank you for providing those islands of calmness and relaxation for me. More than once have I fallen asleep with the sounds of the wind blowing through the trees at your property and the wood crackling in the stove. Thanks for the whole cabin experience.

I just had the most relaxing time I’ve had in a very long time. Watching you and Cali on your adventures is the most enjoyable and peaceful times I experience these days. I certainly hope others enjoys watching as much as I. I wish my Molly could run along the waters edge with your Cali. For a young dog, she does not have much fun in life, I hate to admit. Sometimes she sits up on the bed and watches Cali run after her beloved orange throw-toy and chasing birds and the creatures of the woods.

Watching Cali brought me to tears, she reminds me in many ways of my dog, whom we had to put down last December. Your filmography is so beautiful it soothes my soul. And you give us a math lesson about the Pythagorean theorem. No one can ask for more. Amazing.

Beyond the beautiful photography in this video, the problem solving and creativity of the entire channel speaks of the practice of Sloyd. I learned of Sloyd many years ago from a cabinet making professor at a technical college that I was doing a project for. Sloyd is the belief that craftsmanship with hand tools does two things; it teaches young men a trade but more importantly it builds character. Shawn, what you are doing is Sloyd for adults as it fulfills your vision for your life. Growth occurs throughout life.

I was actually watching this video while I was still at work yesterday and I had to stop whatever I was doing, because this moment in the video got me all emotional. If I owned that place I would never go back to society. This is the way man is suppose to live, in harmony with nature, peaceful and safe.
This makes me laugh. I love these videos as much as the next person but am under no illusions about how we ‘were meant to live’. These properties were abandoned back in the day because they were not viable without loads of outside input.
It’s the way it was meant to be as long as you have multiple cameras and drones and an editing rig and high speed internet access (and a revenue stream from youtube wouldn’t hurt).
I love the demonstration of skills and his commitment to trying to live as sustainably as possible but it is a fantasy modern people indulge in that such a lifestyle is achievable without the huge safety net of a functioning society a stones throw away. Dick Proeneke (Of ‘Alone in the wilderness’ fame) lived this way much more thoroughly but still absolutely relied on regular delivery of supplies from ‘civilization’ to survive. I enjoy the wilderness, love canoeing and camping but know very well that any extended time away from real contact with other people increases the odds of bad things happening. Dying from a toothache or an improperly cleaned cut is not my idea of a good time.

A fair sentiment, the depiction placed you in that frame of mind yet comments made delve into the harsh realities of life as we know it instead of just living in the moment of your comment which I totally got without feeling the need to criticize.
All I meant is thinking of how things use to be back years ago. My great great grampa lived in the hills of Missouri living off the land and free, no one around except his family. How nice it would be to have peace and quiet again. I love his videos and I am not criticizing one thing about it. You misunderstood the point of my comment. Think how it was 150 years ago, how people were nice to each other, how meals were cooked at home, how family sat down and ate together and worked together and how family was the most important thing in their lives. Church every Sunday. Things were different and his videos make me think about that.

This is the first time I leave a comment. I am Kathy, an artist that lives in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. I started watching your videos a while back. I noticed that I really enjoy watching you quietly work alone on whatever your task is for that moment. The quiet of the forest around you is so peaceful and your calm focus is soothing to me. I have no interest in building a log cabin (I'm 66) but I find the process interesting and I can relate to working on something over a long period of time, slowly bringing it to completion and the creative process of discovery and trial and error involved. Also, I appreciate your video skills and how they have grown to give a deeper richer view of the nature around you. This last video was beautiful, cinematic even. AND I love your dog! I also had a golden many years ago and she looked and acted exactly like Kali, she was so smart, playful, loving and spoiled!
