Tunisian Scholar Mohamed Talbi 15-04-2015 Interview

Tunisian Islamic scholar Mohamed Talbi recently expounded upon his views of Islam in an interview on Tunisia's TV Channel 1. Talbi, who called himself a "Quranic Muslim," said that the claim that the Prophet Muhammad was illiterate was "the greatest farce of all." The interview aired on April 15, 2015.

I am an atheist because I cant believe an angel visited Muhammad in a cave, I dont believe anything of the old ( Jews) and new testament ( christian) either. I have no belief of supernatural. However with this old man what I do appreciate is his more relaxed attitude towards homosexuality, prostitution and alcohol. I would rather have my freedom and the chance to have a quality education without religious interference. Religion is a 'faith' not a fact.

the Quran doesn't necessarily ask you to believe in the supernatural; on the other hand, it often says "bring your proof, if you are truthful" and "will you not reason?"
apply these to the Quran itself, and you will find that stories about angels visiting the prophet are apocryphal and incidental to the simple guidance

@@SiriuslyCold I am sure a person can find words of wisdom or interesting parables in a religious text like the qur'an. however my issue is the way religious people proclaim their religious text to be fact and the word of god. I couldn't live in a society where everyone conforms to a religious idealism because of fear and because they were brainwashed at a young age. I was in the phillipines recently which is a great example of a country having its young people being indoctrinated into religion at the age of 5 and not teaching its youth critical analysis and independent thought. Filipinos are nice people but they lack intellectual stimulation.

From my experience with people and communities from that particular world (and others similar to it), a holy figure (or even someone of a lesser stature) who was known to be illiterate only to be "blessed" with knowledge during a revelation or something of that nature, is usually a devotional device to glorify the "God" who bestowed this blessing of "knowing" on the so-called illiterate individual. It's basically a way of saying, "Isn't our God so glorious that He can endow an illiterate with knowledge in only a moment whereas it would usually take years to achieve the same through conventional means."

There's two possibilities. The copy of the Quran Aisha had was "different" from the one the Prophet left to Hafsa, or they are the same.
Neither possibility can be "proven", but it is interesting how you automatically assume they were different and you are also certain of it, with no "evidence".

Still an old Desert Nazi. 'Improve women's Lot'. Is he joking? A Muslim male rapes a woman - got to have 4 male witnesses, therefore 8women witnesses. Men are set above women. women lack intelligence. There is doubt Mohammed was illiterate. After all, before he got into the Prophet business, he was a Trader so would be handling documents. This is the first guy who says he was literate. The Koran is still a mess though.

That is what happens when you take the Quran literally without understanding anything that's written in it (the Salafi way).
The question of of witnesses was intended to protect women. The Quran says that in the absence of a male witness, you need twice as many female witnesses, but it doesn't say you need a male witness along with a woman witness.
See, God knows that men and women are different, and one of those differences is that men have a more imposing personality. So when you have a situation in which a woman must give a testimony, it is best to have more than one woman so that each can "remind" the other, as the Quran puts it. That is, so that if one of the women become intimidated by any man, the other can "correct" her opinion and assure the testimony reflects the truth.
Now i know some will probably recoil at the idea of men and women are seen as different in the Quran, with women being shown to be "weaker", but i would ask anyone to provide any proof men and women are the same and perfectly interchangeable. The equality (more like sameness) of the sexes is a western religion that was never demonstrated by anyone and westerners are going to ridiculous lengths to prove it (like putting women in the military). Why blame the Quran for something you haven't even proven to be true and which is patently NOT true to begin with?
