- VOCES8 sings William Byrd's setting of 'Ave Verum' in the VOCES8 Centre in London.
TEXT
Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine,
vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine,
cuius latus perforatum fluxit sanguine:
esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.
O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu, fili Mariae.
Miserere mei. Amen.
TRANSLATION
Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary,
who has truly suffered,
was sacrificed on the cross for mortals,
whose pierced side flowed with blood:
Be for us a foretaste [of Heaven]
in the final judgement.
Oh sweet, oh pious, oh Jesus, son of Mary,
Have mercy on me. Amen. - Zábava
It's music like this that makes this life worth living.
I completely agree with you. I'm so glad to live, today, when we have gorgeous music like this at our fingertips in an instant...
Nicely put. I feel the same.
@@christiankurek9225 I do, too. :D

Igazad van. Erre még nem is gondoltam.
Depending on where you live, you may be able to attend a Latin Mass where this is done weekly. Toronto Oratory comes to mind.
Voces8 is the best vocal ensemble in the world and they prove it with every piece they record. Flawless work.
The Sixteen are different to Voces8 but every bit as good - love both!
@@flowbyers2825 I think Voces8 is superior to The Sixteen, and unquestionably so. They are just absolutely world class as individual voices and they combine flawlessly. I can’t think of a better ensemble on record, truly.
@@flowbyers2825 I absolutely agree- I love Voces8 especially on pieces that sound great with that unearthly clarity and purity of sound, but the sixteen has a glorious, magnificent, utterly human sound with dramatic depth. My latest favorite is the Gesualdo Six czcams.com/video/o6rh0krDG_A/video.html
They are good but for utter perfection listen to Tenebrae .
They do good takes on various vocal pieces, but there are some that they cannot do better compared to the brilliance of past performers.
Example: hearing the Hungarian choral group sing Biebl's Ave Maria drove me to tears; especially the first time I heard it done by them. VOCES8's performance did not come even close to getting the same reaction out of me.
Another example would be just about any John Rutter piece; although I'd consider giving VOCES8 a chance if John ever conducted them.
I love the idea of them singing with very little vibrato, which helps their pitch stay in place. Also, they have the amazing ability to sing into each other’s voice.
Agree, but I still can't handle the "scooping" of Sopranos.
Music stripped down to timbres in harmony,evolving/cascading as chords - that's choral. It's not flashy(think pop or opera) but I can't think of another sound bigger or more pure.
@@bootlegapples in addition to hitting the actual note...not just below......not just above....no scooping into....so annoying.
@@FLOWERSANDSLOTS To me scooping takes away,it's a habit people form along with adding vibrato to the end of phrases.Makes it sound formulaic, like go through the motions, translates as less genuine.
@@FLOWERSANDSLOTS When a person can make their voice sound like a wind instrument without any waiver/just a good tone it sounds magical. But better in that it's singing words that convey a recounting, idea or story.
The combination of Byrd with Voces8 is just other-worldly. The human voice has not changed much in the 400 years since Byrd lived, and it will have sounded much like this when Elizabeth 1 was on the thone and protected Byrd from persecution - except Voces8 bring him to even higher heights here. He would be pleased I am sure.
One of the most beautiful things ever created and when sung with this level of perfection utterly exquisite.
This is my favorite piece of music ever written, and is single-handedly responsible for my love of choral music. It is the standard to which I judge all "Amens" - it may not be technically wondrous, but it is perfection.
From the moment I heard of Voces8, this has been at the top of my wish list. What a version. Thank you so much.
Sorry but my favorite "amen" is in Buxtehude´s Membra Jesu Nostri
Literally the same for me too.
Same for me. We had an excellent chorale in high school. We sang this in a cathedral in new York with excellent acoustics and it was the most magical musical experience of my life.
Similar here. This is one of the top three songs I can remember from high school chorale that impacted me in a profound way. Beauty will save the world, and this song is full to bursting with beauty.
Dead heat between this and The Sixteen !! How lucky we are.. for a decent Amen or two, try William Mundy's Vox Patris
I’ve sung this many a time and it really gets under your skin. Perhaps the ultimate piece of polyphony that projects powerfully rich but wholly English understated emotion. A masterpiece that says everything whilst apparently not saying much at all. Beautiful rendition.
I always think that I am an atheist. But everytime I listen to this, my heart cries "Please have a mercy on me".
It's the Holy Spirit. Follow HIM. Pax Christi..
Quelle splendeur. William Byrd, merveilleux compositeur et VOCES8, ensemble enchanteur. J'aime infiniment cette musique angélique. Merci à ces artistes talentueux.
It is one thing to be a trained musician, but to have the sensitive heart and spirit to bring to life so many treasures which would have remained on the page, should bring delight as performers and listeners unite spirits in a place indescribable.
Once again, thank each of you for what you do ever so well. God bless you and those you love, and Thank You immensely for what you share with those of us far flung as your audience. DJ in Knoxville TN
What blend! What line! Superb control of dynamics. Ensemble singing doesn't get better than this.
Such a great feeling singing this beautiful masterpiece immediately after receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion.
Just perfect timing..... Just what I need to calm my stormy mind after a hectic day. Thank you.....
"Humans."
When my best friend and I encounter something so ineffably beautiful or impressive we humans have created, he and I speak this single-word sentence.
what a great comment
@@vanessafletcher6710 😊 Hi Vanessa. Yeah, "Humans." It really is the perfect thing to say. We do the same by saying, "Earth" when we encounter something breathtaking in nature or when pondering our place in the stars.
These too I have no words for.

No doubt.
My go to group when life gets stressful. Their voices are enchanting!
Finally! I’ve been waiting of the VOCES8 interpretation of this piece. Absolutely beautiful!
My old friend Billy Byrd asked me to thank you for this lovely rendition.
Guess he would be well chuffed that people were still performing and enjoying his music hundreds of years later.
@@ianclarke1852 That's what we mean by classical music-great for all time.
The harmony of these incredibly gifted singers never fails to amaze and move me. My ears are so happy now. God bless you all. 🎶
Absolutely angelic! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us. May God bless you all!
A moment of the eternal has just kissed my mortal ears..absolutely beautiful, well done and thank you 🙌🏻 ❤
Beautifully said Amen
As a Middle and High school choral and band teacher this is everything about just intonation and the harmonic series that I want my students to understand.
Having listened to quite a few variations of this song, this one ranks very high for one of the best! Beautifully done!
All of your voices are beautiful! Thank you for sharing Byrd's music with us today. You're appreciated very much!
I will be greatly disappointed, if! when I get to heaven, the angels do not sound as sublime as VOCES8.
The first time I heard VOCES8, I fell in love with their beautiful sound and harmony they produce.
That’s why I am listening to everything I see they have.
That’s why I subscribed to them.
I smile and shake my head everytime I hear you folks. Cheers to the Human Instrument. Beautiful.
What a beautiful performance of a beautiful arrangement. When I was in 8th grade, my 7th and 8th grade boys choir performed a shorter and simpler arrangement of this piece (SSA). As I recall we performed it In the spring of 1966. So, as I write this, it’s been 56 years since that performance. Yet, I still remember most of it. I cherish this music to this day.
I don't know if I have suitable words to describe my feelings for hearing this masterpiece, wonderful performance like usual 👏 💜
Thank you again; Voces 8. You've moved me to tears once more! I, too, have waited for you to publish this Byrd repertoire favourite that, like many other choristers, I've sung hundreds of times, having learned it as a teenager more than half a century ago. Even back then, I was in awe of its impact on my own heart and soul, on those singing it with me, and on those in the congregation. Several seconds of total silence always seem to follow the last chord's fading away to nothing... In its liturgical context, it is a masterful work as it is a relatively simple piece, but as in all things, complexity is easy, whereas simplicity is mastery. IMO, it's an ultimate prayer, and you guys are the ultimate expression of St Augustine's words from the 5th century, "Qui bene cantat bis orat", being "whoever sings well, prays twice". Thanks again.
My favorite choral piece of all time.
The miserere in this piece is one of my favorite things I've ever sung. Beautifully written, beautifully performed.
So calming and full of great memories of choir experiences
Sublime. It is exceptionally hard to nail Byrd's Ave Verum dynamically and yet here is such a thing.
It really cannot be done better than this.
VOCE8, j'aime toujours votre formation !!! et tous vos chants ! Merci à vous !
Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Another beautiful presentation by Voces8. I start every morning with their voices.
This piece contains my favorite Alto line of all time (the miserere mei section). As always, superbly done!
I am entranced by Voces8. Their precision, balance, and production of their videos is enthralling - I give a lot of credit to Barnaby, the artistic director, who focuses their extraordinary talent with others I’m sure. Beyond their singing, they offer education - the bringing forth of music in others. I am pretty certain that each member of Voces8 knows their importance in radiating this wonderful energy in the world, because they sing like it.
Altogether ravishing in its simplicity and profound delivery. Thank you.
Прекрасное пение, идеальный ансамбль, благодарю вас!
This is perfect. This was my first piece of choral music (as a young listener), too -- (what I was to learn was) the _miserere mei_ (and its cross-relation) got me. This is just a perfect gem of chorale polyphony and super-sensitive text-setting. Byrd was as good as it gets (as is this performance!)
Muchas gracias por vuestra música. Acerca mi alma a lo divino y aporta paz y serenidad. Mil gracias otra vez!
Can’t get enough of that Amen. Stunning beauty in both composition and performance. God kiss.
It's not just that they sing with their hearts, souls and voices, but with their faces also. Total immersion.
Ok, so I have dreamed of a Voces8 version of this. Some dreams come true. And I can't put it in words, but the sound before the "n" of the final "Amen" is sublimely-superb-more-than-perfect. I. just. can't. Thank you.
Can't be done better. Thank you for this beauty.
Just lovely! My heart is soothed.
@Cynthia. You're right, by the way, how's your week going so far?
I have no words! Except thank you, Voces8, for sharing your artistry with us.
Vollendet. Perfekt. Danke 🙏 🎼🎵🎶🐺
Unfassbar schön. Nicht zu überbieten. Perfekte Balance aller Stimmen.
This piece brings back fond memories of my early singing days. Again (as always), VOCES8, this was superbly performed.
This is my favourite choral music sung by The Tallis Scholars that Ive listen to for over 20 years. I have been keeping an ear out for another choral version of it ever since and I finally found it. Thank you. Added you to my music list. A brilliant and exceptional rendition. Talented singers of a very difficult work by Byrd. I love it. You serenaded my soul.
Magnifique ❤️🙏
I was raised on The King's Singers interpretation. What can I say. It is different. It doesn't mean that it is worse! It shows different aspect of this piece an THIS is good! Well done!
Same. Both versions work. This one hits a pleasing somber note. I'm on board

This is such a wonderful piece of polyphony... one of my absolute favorites, and... of course... a beautiful performance/interpretation from VOCES8! Thank you!!!
Gorgeous!! Never heard it in F# minor before...
Thank you Voces8 for this !
Absolutely beautiful! Singing this in a concert with the City of Birmingham Choir this Saturday, quite a challenge with such a big choir!
I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time! Thanks for doing this! Sounds beautiful!
This is an exquisite performance by the very talented Voces 8. Bravo! I loved it. One of the best! I must admit though, that my gold standard for this piece is the Kings Singers on their "English Renaissance" CD with the stunning voices of Countertenor David Hurley and Bass Stephen Connolly "bookending" the group.
I sang this many years ago.Thankyou for bringing back the memory of exquisite music.
Magnificent! As always... Thank you very much Voces8!!
Thank you!! I've always wanted to hear this by Voces8 😄
Ahhhh, I've been waiting for their version of this wonderful piece. Marvelous, as always!!!
One of my favorites ever by my fave composer. So glad you made this video
One of my most favorites.. this ensamblé is so very talented. I remember learning this very young and it’s always stuck with me. Such a gorgeous composure
De toute beauté, comme toujours avec VOCES8.
Beautiful performance of THE best setting of this text, thank you
Beautiful balance, very calming. Thank you!
A wonderful hommage as we approach the 400th anniversary of the master's death.
Thank you Will and Voces8.
Betörend schön
Astonishing
Wonderful rendition of an amazing piece of music. Thanks guys.
I absolutely adore you guys, I literally fall asleep to your songs and this one really made me cry, thank you
Music such as this immortal and lifts you to spiritual plane way beyond .......
Wonderful, thank you!
Sublime. Absolutely sublime.
Thank you.
Great job Voces8! Whenever I see a new video, I immediately have to play and immediately hit like!
I had the joy of singing in this college. Brings back fond memories of all the choral music we sang. Then I remembered we sang Charles Ives and not fond memories of that! :)
Bass/Baritone section solid as usual! Love it guys!
One of the most beautiful Byrd pieces
Sublime!
Belíssimo! Bravo! Brought tears to my eyes.
Stunning and absolutely breathtaking. I have sung this song I don’t know how many times and I’m thrilled to be singing it again at the 90th birthday celebration of my beloved high school choir. This is the version our dear director chose to demonstrate for us and it’s by far my favorite. Love it.
I must confess: I miss LIVE FROM LONDON!! Yes, this is a gorgeous group singing a beautiful song. Thank you 💗🎶🎵

Another stunning performance. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to listen to you live last week in St David’s Cathedral which was a totally mesmerising experience. Thank you all so much once again 👏👏🎶🎶
Whats a amazing choir!! very very beauty. Thanks!
Sublime performance of a piece of choral music perfection; thank you.
I really appreciate the well- judged phrases, and particularly the final subdued ones.
Of course, this piece is so well known, but with your insight it feels new and fresh.
Thankyou for a consummate performance.
May God bless you all!
