    I'm 6'4 with fairly large hands and I personally love the Hellcat grip more than the Shield, the squareness of it feels better in the hand vs the shield as that one feels rather pointy in the hand which I'm not a fan of. Plus with the extended 13rd mag in the hellcat or pinky extension on the 11rd mag I have a comfortable 3 finger grip and still super easy to conceal and I'm one of them skinny lanky folks where it's hard to conceal on strongside where I prefer to carry.

    I would love to see the S&W Shield 3.0 come with double stack mags... that's the real negative for an otherwise awesome pistol IMHO. That and the roughness of the grips chews up your side during concealed carry if its up against bare skin. I solved that issue by taking the "bite" off the inboard side of the grip (where it touches me in the holster). Still get an excellent grip during use, because other than the thumb, my hand and fingers all use the outboard side for traction. Just my 2 cents to add to the mix. Thanks for the video.

    I own the shield but I like the capacity in the hellcat. I didn't even look at the hellcat when I purchased the shield. The way the shield fit in my hand and the ergonomics just made me fall in love with it. I did buy the +2 mag extension for the mags to give me some more fire power however. The 7 rounder now holds 9 and the 8 rounder holds 10. I still feel comfortable with that capacity because it's lighter than my full size pistols and easier to conceal in the summer. And who knows I might look into buying the hellcat in the future. If capacity is ever an issue I'll just pick up some extended 12 or 15 round mags for my shield.

    I like the looks of the grip on the hellcat. The web of the hand is closer to the slide which should give a higher grip and the ability to mitigate recoil. My wife had a shield and I was not impressed. That coming from a guy who carries an M&P 2.0 4” 9mm everyday.

      I'm about to buy the shield as well as a 12 round magazine, probably get the plus 2 more round adapter for ybe 8 round mag also.
      I want the hellcat si bad and for now as far as price,in think it's almost worth $500 cause tritium or fiber optics are a lot but the Apex trigger over a factory Hellcat wins.
      The hellcat also has much more recoil.
      I want one of so bad, I'm small and my frame can't handle hiding big pieces and even these are barely good enough for shorts and a T..

    Great comparison. I do love my Hellcat, but I will have to disagree with you on the trigger. There is a significant amount of creep in mine before you hit the breaking point. Creep is not a deal breaker in a defensive pistol, but it does hinder fine pinpoint accuracy. I too shoot the Shield 2.0 better because of the more predictable trigger not the ergonomics. I plan on purchasing an Apex trigger for my Hellcat to improve the predictability of the break not to lower the pull weight. I know PRP makes a great trigger as well but it also lowers the pull weight to 3.5 pounds which in my opinion is far to light for a carry piece.

  • @bdm1000
    @bdm1000 Před 4 lety +7

    Good comparisons, but a couple of things. The M&P is actually over 20 ounces. Sometimes S&W combines the pistol and magazine weight, but sometimes they don't. My Performance Center M&P9 M2.0 Shield with its lightening cuts and ported barrel is 20.3 ounces with an empty flush magazine. A regular Shield is likely 20.4 or 20.5 ounces).
    Second, the Hellcat is not double the capacity. I admit, 11+1 is significantly better than 7+1, 8+1, or 9+1 (depending on weather one chooses a Magguts option), but personally this wasn't a selling point for me when considering the SA Hellcat or SIG P365. We all know accuracy goes out the door in a gunfight, so marginal differences at the range can morph into exponentially greater discrepancies in a real life situation (as they usually do when you have to quickly acquire a firing grip under stress). Therefore, I bought my second Shield earlier this year (my first one was in 2014) keeping this in mind.
    In other words, I am more concerned with what is going to happen with the first 8 rounds coming out of a pistol than any subsequent rounds after that. Statistically these first rounds are so much more important than the additional rounds of these other similar size pistols that it actually becomes silly people jumped on the P365 bandwagon even when the pistol was obviously unproven and having problems. I'm not knocking the Hellcat or the P365 at this point, but I do knock selecting those pistols for their capacity if something like a Shield is easier for them to shoot well under stress. Between the ergonomics of the grip and the additional 2-3 ounces, the Shield shoots better for me, and likely for many, so I can't justify another few rounds at the sacrifice of performance in a real-life defensive situation.

      I think the S&W is still a very nice ,well built, American made firearm. The quality is outstanding in my opinion, especially for the price point. The ergonomics just feel natural to me. I don't think the hellcat is worth the extra money for what you are getting. Just my opinion of course.

  • @domenik8339
    @domenik8339 Před 2 lety +1

    The real difference between the two, and what sets the hellcat apart from the sig p365 as well is the quality control. See the chipped emblem on the s&w symbol? Their laser engraver has been having issues for literal years and has lead to sharp scalloping and chipping engravements like that. Also the trigger is an absolute crapshoot on them. Mine is currently 8 lbs and hasn't broken in over 1000 rounds in.

      @ashsherman Před 4 lety +1

      I disagree.
      I understand cause to upgrade you are still gonna spend $500 but let's focus only on how they shot, not true $ value. You can get a 12 round mag for the shield too, or a 2 round upgrade kit that's a mod to the mag.
      So if you downgraded the hellcats sights, trigger stays the same, cause I know for fact Springfield Factory triggers are a little bit squishy but they are just fine,
      SHIELD trigger isnt that wonderful either but Springfield factory wins over 1st Gen Shield. The 2.0 has newly designed trigger.
      As far as actually shooting ybe pieces, it was obvious that with same size barrel.that the Springfield had major snap or recoil while the shield he was able to shoot faster and more accurately.
      Both suffice as far as out of commission or death shots .
      Really I say for the moment, and as an avid Springfield fanatic who wants a Hellcat so bad to get the shield at half the price. (Just buy a 12 round magazine for $25.)
      , I am convinced now to wait for trigger and striker issues to be fixed on the hellcat and possibly inorivenr it's like a ported barrel.

    Bought a Hellcat yesterday. Should have done more homework. It's basically the same size as my shield. I already hate the trigger. Apex trigger on the way. I keep wanting to like Springfield's polymer pistols (I've owned a XD-S & XD-E), but comparing it to my shield, about the only way the Hellcat beats it is magazine capacity. Bought the shield- performance center for $499 ($399 after rebate) a couple years ago. Ported barrel. Night sights. Good trigger with clearance for a gloved finger. Hellcat- no rear night sight. Cut for an optic. Has an accessory rail which is basically useless because finding a holster which accommodates accessories is virtually impossible (unless you go custom). It's cut for an optic. So... the gun was $569... plus $80 for a trigger fix- hopefully. Worth it for an extra $250?

      I rented the Hellcat and the Glock 43x to see which of the two I’d buy. I enjoyed both guns, but I bought the Glock because the Hellcat had more recoil and was harder to get follow up shots off as fast (at least for me it was).
      Again, I think the hellcat is a great firearm. But I agree that it has more muzzle flip than it’s competitors.

      @@UrMomGoes2College hey Rusty. Without watching the review again, my recollection is that the M&P is 8 rounds total capacity out of the box, 9 with extended mag. The Hellcat is 12 and 14 respectively. That's 50% increased capacity. To me, that's significant, not merely noticeable.
      I wasn't condemning, simply responding to the degree of accuracy of the description.
      And it's in lieu of that difference that I opined that they weren't apples to apples comparable. I don't think there's any argument and certainly concede that they are both excellent concealed carry firearms.
      "Only fair to emphasize (corrected) that," is part of the sentence of appreciation. After noting my thoughts on similarity, I wanted to emphasize that the video was educational, entertaining and that I thank Hammer and everyone who goes to the trouble to make these videos for the sake of everyone interested.

    When you take into account the grouping difference, the +5 of the Hellcat seems a little less relevant to me. Despite what the spec sheet says, the Hellcat is thicker than the Shield in the real world and I'm not sure it would conceal quite as well as I know the Shield does. I'm not sure what point of the gun they are using for thickness measure.

We're talking single stack vs double here. That 9mm bullet offset counts unless they make the grip walls that much thinner and I don't think they could. After having concealed both guns daily for a few months each, let me tell you, the Hellcat isn't as comfortable. The abrasive grip rubbing against your skin, the beaver tail poking you when you sit if you pelvis carry and the extra weight of +5 making your belt tension that much more important especially if you loosen it a bit to make it more comfortable to sit. I enjoyed reaching for the M&P 9 daily, but wear the Hellcat because I want that +5. You need to compare the hellcat with a shield pro which can hold 13 rounds. And is still cheaper than the hellcat. No matter how you figure it the hellcat is a lot more money it was when they first came out and it still is. In comparison they both shoot very well and there is virtually no difference in the shooting of them and the accuracy. But like I said the hellcat is a lot more money. So I guess if money is something you want to lose then go ahead and pay more money for the hellcat.

    SW need to upgrade capacity, at least 10+1, for it is a big factor in this modern age, and the MP Shield is a great gun/superb shooter.
