WTF Happened to WHOOPI GOLDBERG?

  • For our money, Whoopi Goldberg ranks as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. If you were born after a certain date, you might most know her as a host on The View, but she was breaking down walls and winning Oscars long before that. Her list of credits inspires awe. There’s Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple, Ghost (she won the Oscar for that one), Sister Act, which was so good that it got a sequel, Jumping Jack Flash, and many more. Heck, she even made a more than credible action hero in the badass eighties flick Fatal Beauty. At the height of her fame, she made a risky move by going to TV and recurring on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Guinan, but she was a fan of the franchise and didn’t care that she could get pigeonholed as a TV actress.
    Indeed, Whoopi was the best, and it’s a shame that she’s gotten fewer significant roles in movies in recent years, although she’s reprising Guinan on Star Trek: Picard, and there are rumours of a Sister Act sequel happening on Disney Plus. Time will tell, but in the episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we celebrate a talent that’s not one to shy away from controversy (a massive understatement if you watch The View) but remains an impeccable actress (even if she did do Theodore Rex);

      Jumpin' Jack Flash is a classic that has actually aged well. The computer screens are clunky (as the style of the time) but it's pretty much texting throughout, so it's not at all distracting. And even the storyline still works. Jack's trying to get the hell out of Eastern Europe and the Russians are after him... if anything watching that movie now makes it even more harrowing.

    Whoopi has always been "problematic". She devised the "racist towards black people" black-face character and jokes that cancelled Ted Danson's career, for a while, in the mid-90s. He'd put himself in that ill-advised position to roast Whoopi. I'm still baffled that neither of them saw the folly in this. Still, Whoopi's always been willing to say the things and do the things that make others truly uncomfortable, so it wasn't surprising she planned the whole thing. She must have been spectacularly persuasive to get Ted Danson on board.
    Whoopi's brilliance lies in her ability to press the buttons of hypocrisy that dwell in the psyche of most human beings. The vast majority of the people calling for her head, currently, are those who've been bleating on and on about how ridiculous it is for people to be cancelled for their politics (Gina Carano, Dave Chappelle, J.K. Rowling, etc.), yet they've skittered out of the woodwork, like forest gnomes, to call for her head over a point-of-view that, while borderline ignorant, was neither intentionally malicious nor remotely racist.
    It's funny to witness everyone playing the "I'm offended" game, as though it really matters to them.

    While I don't agree with what she said about Holocaust Nazis, I think punishing people like Whoopie (and, yes, Gina Carano) was the wrong thing to do. The lesson we're learning is that nobody should ever talk about certain topics ever, lest they risk their careers and their social status. I know it's a sensitive topic, but we need to be able to discuss sensitive topics without people losing their minds. And we need to be OK with someone occasionally getting it wrong. Why can't we just be adults and discuss and debate exactly what they may have gotten wrong instead of cancelling these people? We can't learn anything or move forward about a topic if all discussion is completely taboo.

It’s really easy to point a finger and condemn that person. Nobody has the patience to talk anymore since groupthink citizens already have their selective peers and a narrative to uphold. I initially thought the internet would be a good thing and it definitely is to a certain extent; It is also very dangerous.

    The View is, by and large, where the sentiment, "shut up and dribble," comes from. She's great when she's playing a role. When she gets up there and lets the world know what she thinks about stuff, people get pissed off. Sometimes for no good reason, sometimes rightly so. I don't care what Whoopi thinks, I care how she plays a part in a movie.

    Holy shit dude…I’ve been staring at Whoopi’s face for like 30 years (sister act was one of my favorite movies as a kid). “No eyebrows” just completely shattered my worldview and left my grasp on reality in tatters. I suspect I’ll be rocking back and forth in a padded room, frantically devouring my own poop within the month 🧐

    She’s in the same club as Roseanne Barr….she followed the road to Hollywood and felt like many, that she could say anything she wanted, and offend anyone she wanted with no repercussions. When someone becomes famous, they become egocentric and they begin to think they have it all. A little bit of humble is what would keep them grounded in reality.

    I stopped the video at the mid roll ad.
    Not continuing.
    I don't know why youtubers go to the trouble of creating professional looking content, to allow it to be ruined by ads that literally cut a sentence in two. It's distracting to the viewer, and ruins the work you put in to the video. Its also never for a product or service that is even remotely appealing.
